I had a quick search on Google for some more information about this but came up with nothing at all.

I have to say it doesn't sound very likely - I'd be surprised if it was anything more than something from a work of fiction.

An entire chapter is dedicated to the Grinning Man in John A. Keel's book The Complete Guide to Mysterious Beings.

One encounter happened in October 1966, when two boys, James Yanchitis and Martin Munov, were walking home at night.

Walking along Fourth Street, they reached the corner of the New Jersey turnpike, which has a steep incline, and a very high fence running along the street. The fence is used to keep anyone from climbing up to the turnpike. It was when they got to this corner that they spotted a huge man standing behind the fence.

"He pivoted around and looked right at us..." said Munov, "...and then he grinned a big old grin."

They describe him as being well over 6 feet tall, broad shoulders, wearing reflective green coveralls and a black belt. He had a very dark complexion and, "little round eyes ... real beady ... set far apart." They did not see any hair, ears, or nose on his face, nor did they notice any hands.

There are several accounts of encounters with the grinning man in the book.

Also, in the book, The Mothman Prophecies, Keel describes more reports of the grinning man.

Edit: I also forgot to add that the grinning man has been reported coming out of landed UFOs.

The Complete Guide to Mysterious Creatures by John Keel did a few chapters on him. He is associated with UFOs, and, apparently, Old Hag Syndrome.

Someone on the ghost board and I were talking about him. Apparently there is an urban legend of a guy who broke into homes and stole nothing...just grinned at them.

Later I will post excerpts from my Keel book.
