did anyone else read that article about the scientists that shot a beam of light into a box filled with a special gas, and this gas somehow made the light move faster, as the beam had already left the box before it had even finished entering? wacko.gif thats just mind boggling, but also awesome!

Okay wait a second here. I did a little searching  happy.gif  and came up with this: THEORY . This might help you get a better idea of what the speed of light really is. This was made independantly by one person so you or others may have a second opinion. And of course we'll never truly know the speed of light until we witness it ourselves...  stretch.gif

This really depends on what you mean by "we". If by "we" you mean you and me, then perhaps you're right. We personally haven't witnessed(or calculated) the speed of light, so how can we be sure of it's true speed? But if by "we" you mean we humans, than you are wrong. Through particle acceleration, we can accurately measure the speed of light.

siphis,
If you follow the thread, you will notice dj said "every 10 bllion years = one light year"

Of course we all know this is nonsense, and after SaRuMaN corrected her, he gave an example of something as equally nonsense: "What you've said above is like saying 30 seconds = 2 metres"

Then I continued sarcastically by stating my own version of nonsense: "I've also read somewhere the color blue = 4 ounces"

Kismit then added onto my statement: "only when you lick it Homer . Otherwise it only wieghs 2.5 ounces"

Uranium then said: "how do you lick the color blue?"

So this is nothing more than continued silliness starting from dj's erroneous statement relating time and distance.

I tried some blue once.  Tasted more like purple.  Maybe had a touch too much red in it.

My friend, Myron, insists it tastes like chicken.

And Myron is blue, too, so he should know.

Etsuckers, dont you think scientist who proved or tried to prove enstein wrong were great mathmaticians? If you were right and many others were wrong, wouldn't scientist proved Enstein wrong a long time ago? Faster than light is possible. You take a lamp and turn it on than you throw it at the direction you want it to travel, it might be faster. LoL

the distance that light travels in one year is 8 trillion miles ? I highly doubt that but ok.

Personally, I think the speed light travels in one year is:

2,940,883,200,000 (miles)

which states - 2 trillion, 940 billion, 883 million, 200 thousand for those who are still studying a foreign langauge. Which means that the nearest star is:

11,763,532,800,000 (miles) away. OR 4 light years.

By the way, has anyone heard of strange matter or quark matter ?

So it's possile to travel at the speed of light squared? If that's true doesn't that mean that the time would be the distance in speed of light square rooted? So what if I wanted to travel to some place that was one light year away? You can't square root one but what if it's -1 x -1? You could get there before you've even left!   ohmy.gif
I'm going to read the link soon.

What about the speed of getting out of a Black hole? Even light is not enought fast to get out of it so that make me presume that there is a faster speed.

Humm let's ask spoke!  rolleyes.gif

Lightyear
A measure of distance equal to that traveled by light in one year. Abbreviated ly. It equals 9.46 1012 kilometers.
LIGHTSPEED

Homer is right....we can accurately measure the speed of light.   However, it isn't theoretically possible to achieve speeds faster than light.  Just so you know.
