Actually I haven't paid much attention to it recently , but I have been through a few changes on the board and it seems the Flags are one of those finishing touches added when the board has been technologically fiddled with as it has been of late . When you select your country in your profile, the forum displays the flag for that country underneath your avatar in all your posts. Makes it nice and easy to see which country everyone is from.
