if the ex-engineer that i was talking to can be believed, and there is no reason why he should not be, then the plane is no longer i existence as it would have either burnt or melted due to the explosion.

Yes MC said he had seen the wreckage - the two posts aren't mutually exclusive, small amounts of wreckage are scattered about whilst the majority has been burned up/melted. I think that solves that one quite nicely - thanks guys.
