It's all about the butt decoration. Without tails, backs get pretty boring. They probably dyed them different colors, too.

Dinos had such huge tails because they used them to swat bugs away... and bugs were BIG back then....  :D

First dinos are about 240 MYA, last ones 65MYA. 175 million years is a long tale indeed, although this post is starting to rival it. :D

why do they have such large long tails? doesn't such tail make them less maneuverable, especially in wooded areas where turning would be imp***ible?
also, if a predator is chasing you, the tail would be a major drawback because the predator just has to grab a hold of your tail and you cannot get away anymore. someone please explain the purpose of such a tail and how it would benefit the survival of an organism like a dinosaur

It's not a surprise that they have long tails. They are reptiles and many reptiles have tails. Then this is wrong ------ (if a predator is chasing you, the tail would be a major drawback because the predator just has to grab a hold of your tail and you cannot get away anymore.). Big Dinosaurs used their tails as weapon as well. Long big tail for large Dinosaurs are indeed good.Take a p***ed off 50 to 100 tonne Sauropod,if it uses its tail as a weapon then 5 or more theropods will be flying at the same time.Lol.

T-rex had a long tail because he used it to scratch wherever his short front limbs couldnt reach like behind his Ears. If he wagged his tail it meant he was pretending to be happy.

Mammoths found it more useful to grow a tail from their butt and a longer tail from their face. Overtime, evolution meant they could breathe through their front tails.

Perhaps they could shed their tails like modern lizards and grow them back.  And maybe their tails could be useful for swimming.
