i personally believe what happened to there residents at that house, however, i watched both films and then saw this documentary on the truth, and the actual father of the family actually looked, and acted like a crackpot that sort of made me apprehensive, though i believe it nonetheless.

Although the story of the house was found to be untrue, some strange things befell those who had been involved in the original horror story. Jay Anson, author of the Amityville Horror best seller, died soon after receiving a million-dollar advance for his next book. Paul Hoffman, who wrote the original feature article, died some time later in mysterious circumstances. The Cromartys son who occupied the house after the Lutz family died tragically early.
This also could just be coincidence, strange occurrence like this happen all the time look at the hype surrounding the Poltergeist movies strange deaths and goings on but is it evil at work? I'm not saying what went on wasn't supernatural but i also have to keep an open mind and consider it just to be a coincidence

I do believe in the afterlife but it angers me that it is used as a publicity stunt, its hard enough when true cases come to light and for it to be accepted as a true supernatural happening, it doesn't help when you have so many fraudsters just wanting to make a few quid.
Like you said the family who moved in after the Lutz have reported no strange occurrences, it could be that the spirits done what they needed to and have moved on but i have huge doubts accepting this to be the case.
The house could have been haunted i personally think most places are to some degree, i just have a problem accepting the supposed truth of the Lutz's story.
Also you cant forget that when Robert Defeo cold-bloodily killed his family he tried to get a lighter sentence by claiming he was driven to killing his family by the evil spirits that inhabited his house, this was proven to be untrue and even his lawyer has done numerous interviews stating he had connections to the Lutz family and passed on the information that Defeo had claimed happened to him in his home, so after all this doesn't it strike you as a coincidence what the Lutz's family claim happened to them whilst they lived there for the 28 days.
Abit on the morbid side, when the Lutz moved in, the house had not been cleaned after the murders so as you can imagine lots of nasty smells, bugs, stains which would contribute to some of the claims that they made, but i personally think it was just an over fabrication twisted to incorporate into the whole story.
I know some of you wont be happy with what i have written, but these are only my personal views i could be wrong and you are right, but the truth is no one can really verify the exact goings on unless we were present, we are spectators who can really only have an opinion chosen by what information we have picked up second hand no one is really right no one is wrong, until conclusive evidents however it may present itself can beyond no doubt confirm or deny what we personally believe to be the truth.

Wow, the house had not been cleaned? How long after the murders did they move in?
The murders happened on Wednesday 14th November 1974, the Lutz didn't move in till 18th December 1975.
So as you can imagine a lot of smells and bugs would have accumulated in that time, that's just a horror in itself i personally don't think i could have moved in there.

i seriously doubt they didnt clean the house, i mean its part of the C.S.I duty to clean up, and if not them the cops would have the curtesy. i dont belive for a second that they left the house full of rotted bodies or even remnants of it for almost a year.
prove me otherwise
Before the house can even be put on the market it has to be cleaned. Whether a crime happend there or not. My step-father is a relator and I've been with him to check on houses to see if they are cleaned before they are shown.
