Almost half of all UK homes now have access to the internet, according to new figures.

The estimated 12 million households online is more than five times higher than in 1998.

The most popular reasons for using the internet are to send and receive emails and to search for information about goods and services - according to 83% of those who took part in a survey.

However, 44% of users said they got too many junk emails and 28% had received a computer virus in the past 12 months.
