Where was it in the 80's? Does Anyone remember 420 in the 80's?
I was in high school in the US in the mid and late 80's and it was used then. It's been around a long time.
I had always heard that it was the time kids were home from school and parents weren't yet home from work, so time to light up.

According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation. While our teens feel that they know something we don't, you can let them in on the fact that it was your generation that came up with the numbers.
A quote from one of the Waldos in the High Times article states, "We did discover we could talk about getting high in front of our parents without them knowing by using the phrase 420." Fortunately, your teenagers will not have that same option.
This to me only makes sense that this is where it really originated from. Now 420 however is no longer code and a part of the pop culture. For me 420 is ritual everyday at 4:20 I smoke. Every year on May the 20th i go to a public place with the rest of the pot culture and get high.

I never thought I'd be saying this to anyone, but maybe you should smoke less. 4/20 is in April, mang.

I'd never heard of the 420thing until a few years ago when I saw it on a poster at the mall. I asked my girlfriend what it meant and she said that it was hippy code for the time of day to smoke pot. Oddly enough, when I was in my early teens, the number that would have better suited my friends and I would have been 24-7!

Not exactly sure... I don't think anybody knows really - Every circle has what they believe. Maybe it just came from a bunch of different places?
