Earlier today, my parents and I were out shopping. We were in W. H. Smith's (a bookshop, for those who may not know), when this black thing zoomed right in front of my face and 'flitted' away over a shelf. I could see no sign of it afterwards. It was larger than fly size, before you ask. It moved sort of like a butterfly, but there are no flowers in the town centre, so generally no butterflies or moths. This is honestly a true story. What do you lot think?

could have been a butterfly, there has been a influx of them because of the warm spell. Could have been a lost bat or small bird as well. Or maybe it was an orb..

If it was black I think it may have been a swallowtail butterfly. Logical, that's how I think generally.

I live in the north-west of the UK, and the swallowtail is limited to a few areas in East Anglia, which is in the south-east. This is because that is the only place that their favourite plants grow, so they wouldn't come anywhere near where I live. PLUS, the Old World Swallowtail (the one found in Britain) is yellow. Info

No, sorry. It was the middle of the day, so a bat would have been easily noticeable, and as therewere so many obstacles (in the form of bookshelves) that it would have been flying around pell-mell and easy to spot, and as I said I couldn't see it afterwards. As for the bird...I would have known it was a bird, I think. Anyway, the only birds in the centre are scrounging pigeons.

Thanks for helping though, both of you.

STOP PRESS: I asked my mum if she saw anything and...it was a fly. I'm very sorry that I wasted your time. Moderators, please close this useless, stupid, sham of a thread. I'm off to kill myself...
