A google group (usenet) search for a particular Spirit probe image from Mars (PIA04995) turns up a hit on one of the Russian relcom groups:

http://tinyurl.com/ykwm5x

on which Russians ask the question "А были ли амеpиканцы на Маpсе?"

"Have Americans been to Mars?"

Here's what they're looking at, and why the question is asked:

user posted image

As you can see, there are clear footprints in the image, as well as mechanical junk and debris. The footprints are recent; the mechanical junk is thousands if not tens of thousands of years old.

One of the Russians comments:

"дык это не Марс, это Западный Узбекистан." i.e. the whole thing's fake and the picture was made in western Uzbekistan and not on Mars. The guy figures no way in hell Americans done been to Mars.

Here's what I see in PIA04995: First off, 99% of the image is an empty desert plain stretching to the horizen with rocks strewn all over it as if the universe's biggest rock fight had taken place there. Basically it looks like the scene of a rock fight in the Gobi desert.

Now, a rock has to come from some place, and that is usually a mountain or some sort of a bigger rock. Nonetheless the mountain or bigger rock is conspicuously missing in the image. Granted catastrophes happen, but for something to break an entire mountain up into rocks in such a way as to leave no trace of the mountain is more than a little bit unusual. You'd need a hydrogen bomb. BUILDINGS, on the other hand, would be considerably easier to break up into rocks without leaving a trace of the buildings. Just a thought; I mention it because a number of the rocks in the other one percent (that is, aside from the 99% which appear to be rocks) appear to be building blocks of one sort or other; too many straight lines and rectangular corners.

And then, also in the image, are about a baker's dozen items which do not appear to be rocks at all but rather remains of machinery and other artificial things. I would say without hesitation that there was no chance of any of the objects in question being natural formations or anything like that.

And then finally, over in the lower right corner of the image just a bit above the two items which resemble a bell housing and an icecube tray, there are what appear to be two or three human (booted) footprints, and these are clear and striking. Of course, you have to download the large tiff image to see this sine a jpeg image will not show such details at such a scale.

Now, I can see three possible explanations here.

One is that the image is altogether faked and was taken in New Mexico or Arizona somewhere, and that strikes me as terribly far-fetched. Nonetheless given the difficulty of getting a human to Mars at this point in time, you have to view that as one possibility.

A second possibility would be that the things which appear to be (fairly fresh, and not 50,000 year old) footprints are actually something else, and I and others are simply having a difficult time coming up with thoughts as to what kinds of things might resemble footprints. In other words, a failure of the imagination.

The third possibility would be that some astronaut or other NASA or JPL employee who had been diagnosed with cancer or something like that had asked for and gotten a one-way ticket up there, and was out investigating the area where the two artificial items in question are located.

The scenario which would be halfway imaginable would have some astronaut on a one-way trip up there a couple of years back radioing in the coordinates of an area he found interesting, and then the Spirit probe being put down on those coordinates and NASA employees releasing a wide-angle image which they hadn't bothered to zoom and look at closely.

I'm not having an easy time coming up with a fourth possibility.

NASA owes the world an explanation here.

Usually the simplest explanation is the correct one. I would believe it to be a fake or to be something other then footprints, I highly doubt they sent one man on a suicide mission. Do you happen to recall the pictures that showed 'raptor' like creatures on Mars?

There have been a number of craft sent to Mars ! There are some still there roaming around, taking pics, sampling soil ect. We can send space craft to mars and have done so.

In that case, then NASA officials are probably guilty of criminal misconduct.

Here's another shot of the same Spirit probe image right below the footprints in question, showing some of the ancient mechanical debris I mentioned:

The NASA image page for PIA04995 is:

Like I noted, you have to download the 25 mb tiff image to see this stuff, and then do some zooming near the lower right hand corner.

We have people claiming that Americans have secretly set foot on Mars whilst others are claiming that it is impossible to go to the Moon. Both sets of arguments are based on photographs which "look like" something. Both sets of arguments have no real evidence.

The fourth theory was that the ancient Egyptians used the star gate and actually lived on Mars.

I was stating that we have sent probe's and satellites to mars. Not that man has ever been to mars !! No I do not believe man has been to mars !!! Nor will be landing on Mars anytime soon.

Just in case that was directed in my general direction wink2.gif

Nonetheless, at least one NASA photograph from the Spirit probe has convinced people in other countries that either an official NASA image was totally faked, or that Americans have landed a man on Mars and are refusing to talk about it.

As a taxpayer, either one of those choices bothers me.

Moreover, the art of being in denial is perfectable. Try a few simple exercises, e.g. look at this picture:

and then repeat to yourself "This is not a cow..." twenty or thirty times. With a little practice, it starts to come naturally.

It works backwards too. Take a fuzzy picture of a rock and say to yourself "This is ancient mechanical debris" twenty or thirty times, and you'll see the results.

click your heels three times and your on mars...why would anyone visit a dead rock anyways?...only the US would spend billions studying a dead planet...they need to make sure it's dead... thumbsup.gif

Ok, this is the site of an alien space ship crash. *repeat 20 to 30 times*

Nope, still looks like a pile of rocks to me! grin2.gif
