An entire subculture of people (usually angsty teens) with a fake personality. The concept of Emo is actually a vicious cycle that never ends, to the utter failing of humanity, and it goes something like this:
1. Girls say they like "sensitive guys" (lie)
2. Guy finds out, so he listens to faggy emo music and dresses like a dork so chicks will see that he is sensitive and not afraid to express himself (lie). He dyes his hair black, wraps himself in a stupid looking scarf, develops an eating disorder, and rants about how "nobody understands".
3. Now an emo guy, he meets Emo chick and they start dating, talking about how their well-off suburban lifestyles are terrible and depressing (lie)
4. Emo guy is just too depressed to bathe, and has more mood swings than emo chick, and he doesn't even have a menstrual cycle. Emo chick dumps him, saying "It's not you, it's me." (lie) as she drives off with Wayne, the school jock and captain of the football team.
5. Emo guy goes home and cries, proceeds to write a weak song and strum a single string on his acoustic guitar. Another emo chick sees how he is so in touch with his feelings, and the cycle continues.
The title of the thread points to the over 30's for a description of 'this is what an emo is'.
What I was questioning in my post was if the adult who wrote the above source and those who think this about emo's are maybe misunderstanding the emo culture for the whole teen angst/peer pressure/ out crowd/ in crowd thing? (maybe it's just me that's misunderstanding the emo thing! lol

)
To me it stands out as just being typical teenage angst, which is normal. Yet emo's clearly seem to get a hard time from everyone!! I never knew that writing poems and feeling misunderstood was a new thing and exclusive to emo's only!?! heck I look back at some of my writings in my teenage 'dear diarys' and I cringe and laugh so much! however back at the time it was another story, everything was a matter of life and death through these years
In other words every generation has been through it one way or another. Are emo's any more different from any other teen really? Are they any more different from any other generation who've been through this before?
The only things that appear different is with their external identity - the clothes, haircut and then the music. But I also pointed out that I know people who enjoy the music and/or the fashion but are not in the least bit 'emo'
as defined by the above source culture wise. I also wonder if the intensity of the emo thing is brought out because of the technology teens have now. The likes of Blogs, MySpace, IM, Communities etc. An emergence of online and reality worlds coming together. I'm trying hard here to understand really I am. I'm trying to imagine what my friends and I would have been like through our teens if we had a global platform to express ourselves on

I have not forgotten, but there is a common trait that true adults aquire that makes us sickening to Emos. When a true adult sees a (dare I say it?) child who is moaning about being miserable it is a natural reaction for us to try to do something to make the child happier.
Bella I would argue that alot of teenagers thru all generations from all backgrounds have felt this way about other adults at times. Anyway I'd always get a spanking for moaning or being miserable/stroppy/rude/ EMO

and then I'd go off to my room in a huff or go for a long walk and wish I was dead
