I have not forgotten, but there is a common trait that true adults aquire that makes us sickening to Emos. When a true adult sees a (dare I say it?) child who is moaning about being miserable it is a natural reaction for us to try to do something to make the child happier.

Adults also have feelings and as an adult I am biased in believing that their emotions also count for something and that they should not be treated like appliances on demand or the enemy that needs to be taken down at every opportunity. I do not appreaciate or like someone snarling and cursing at me because I had the audacity to offer assistance or a treat of some kind in the hopes that I could make them feel better.

Now that I know Emos go to a great deal of trouble to project a suitable miserable aspect and do not want to be disturbed, like a poet giving a reading from their works, I will leave them alone unless I see that they are bleeding or have lost consciousness.

Wait, wait. Let me attempt to wrap my head around this one.

Now you are claiming to be some sort of bleeding heart for these poor, helpless teenagers that you feel the implicit need to berate? And that makes you a 'true' adult, as you put it? Outstanding.

An entire subculture of people (usually angsty teens) with a fake personality. The concept of Emo is actually a vicious cycle that never ends, to the utter failing of humanity, and it goes something like this:

1. Girls say they like "sensitive guys" (lie)
2. Guy finds out, so he listens to faggy emo music and dresses like a dork so chicks will see that he is sensitive and not afraid to express himself (lie). He dyes his hair black, wraps himself in a stupid looking scarf, develops an eating disorder, and rants about how "nobody understands".
3. Now an emo guy, he meets Emo chick and they start dating, talking about how their well-off suburban lifestyles are terrible and depressing (lie)
4. Emo guy is just too depressed to bathe, and has more mood swings than emo chick, and he doesn't even have a menstrual cycle. Emo chick dumps him, saying "It's not you, it's me." (lie) as she drives off with Wayne, the school jock and captain of the football team.
5. Emo guy goes home and cries, proceeds to write a weak song and strum a single string on his acoustic guitar. Another emo chick sees how he is so in touch with his feelings, and the cycle continues.

The title of the thread points to the over 30's for a description of 'this is what an emo is'.

What I was questioning in my post was if the adult who wrote the above source and those who think this about emo's are maybe misunderstanding the emo culture for the whole teen angst/peer pressure/ out crowd/ in crowd thing? (maybe it's just me that's misunderstanding the emo thing! lol original.gif )

To me it stands out as just being typical teenage angst, which is normal. Yet emo's clearly seem to get a hard time from everyone!! I never knew that writing poems and feeling misunderstood was a new thing and exclusive to emo's only!?! heck I look back at some of my writings in my teenage 'dear diarys' and I cringe and laugh so much! however back at the time it was another story, everything was a matter of life and death through these years grin2.gif

In other words every generation has been through it one way or another. Are emo's any more different from any other teen really? Are they any more different from any other generation who've been through this before?

The only things that appear different is with their external identity - the clothes, haircut and then the music. But I also pointed out that I know people who enjoy the music and/or the fashion but are not in the least bit 'emo' as defined by the above source culture wise.

I also wonder if the intensity of the emo thing is brought out because of the technology teens have now. The likes of Blogs, MySpace, IM, Communities etc. An emergence of online and reality worlds coming together. I'm trying hard here to understand really I am. I'm trying to imagine what my friends and I would have been like through our teens if we had a global platform to express ourselves on laugh.gif

Bella I would argue that alot of teenagers thru all generations from all backgrounds have felt this way about other adults at times. Anyway I'd always get a spanking for moaning or being miserable/stroppy/rude/ EMO laugh.gif and then I'd go off to my room in a huff or go for a long walk and wish I was dead happy.gif

Anyway, I think acceptance/tolerance for others different than oneself comes with maturity ( for most ) which is why some of the over 30's ( for what this thread was started for) have maybe forgotton the whole teen/angst/peer/incrowd/outcrowd thing that goes on. Every generation has been through it though some way or another and has come out the other end.

Which is why in my first post here, I called it dumb. I wasn't implying that these kids are dumb (so sorry if it sounded like that). I was expressing the opinion that many adults find the whole Emo, goth, punk, preppy, whatever thing dumb because it really makes not one whit of difference in life.

Mabye I don't really get it because I never changed who I was in order to fit in back in high school either.

Any "subculture" built around depression is such a joke. I think anyone who claims to be Emo, or could be described as such, just enjoys the music and/or fashion (or worst case scenario: attention.)
Now "Goth", THAT'S a real subculture. yes.gif

Probably the most glaring problem with this place.

I can't believe this thread slipped under my radar for so many pages. Shame. Shame on everyone. Emo music and "culture" pretty much exemplify why I hate white people so much.

I should point out that although there are a lot of freaks out there who listen to emo, have fringe haircuts and cut themselves while crying in the bathtub, some emo music actually good. By that I mean bands who do just sing about heartbreak but actually make a good song out of it. Meanwhile those with eyeliner and lip rings can do us both a favour and die already.

I've yet to hear a talented emo band.

(I still like the hair. It makes me want to pinch their cheeks. yes.gif )

Some would say that emo spans as far back as Fugazi, Minor Threat, Joy Division, etc. Others relate it to R.E.M. so it's really not fair to classify this genre to bands like Dashboard Confessional or Brighteyes or something because it's basically a cheap interpretation, just like punk rock these days are just cheap overly gloritized imitations of the old days.

As for the kids, yeah, some may be sniveling brats but the people who write and sing the songs they cry to are older than 30 for the most part.

Gah, matey! The OP is a childish git I say. You have to have some respect for other people, you cant just bash someone for the sake of it. I think emos are good people and all these stereotypes the OP said are false in most occasions.

Labels labels... Everyone used to call me goth in highschool for some reason, but I never thought of myself as that. Anyways, for the people that call themselves emo, I don't really mind the girl ones.. Those self proclaimed emo boys annoy the hell out of me though.

As for emo music <HURLS>.

I think we have defined EMO. To avoid anymore offense or arguments, I think this thread should now be closed.
