I am actually a little surprised at this.  A bolt gun is relatively cheap, re-usable, and much quicker and painless when compared to clubbing.  I can't imagine why the time and effort would be wasted on clubbing when much more efficient methods are available.  It just isn't as profitable.

Bulletholes could ruin the fur, so most trappers/fur industries just go with clubbing. It's actually doesn't make the animal suffer as much as most people believe because one good swing and they are instantly dead.

Quote

Because clubbing something to death isn't cruel either right?

But we do eat animals...and I'm going to assume that whole process isn't exactly humane either.
It depends on the butchershop. I know that some of them have different processes for different animals, and some of them can be kind of cruel.

You know the mods might as well lock this topic now that the video has been removed, as new people can't really give much input.

But umm...or maybe not. I think atleast they should wait untill they are dead before skinning them.

No, because many people are still discussing this issue.

But a bolt gun just makes one neat, dime-sized hole in the skull.  It doesn't touch the fur.  They use it at slaughterhouses so they can process the cows much more effficiently, with little in the way of training.  You just press the thing up to the head and squeeze, no muss, no fuss.  Heck, half the value is that you don't have all the blood and guts activists like to plaster pictures of all over the place.

What I really don't understand is why people still feel the need to wear real leather and fur coats? There are so many alternatives today that look and SMELL better!
I remember when I was younger, my mother had a rabbit fur coat. I always thought the thing smelled weird. Leather smells too. Some people like the smell I guess. I don't.
Only fake fur and synthetic leather for me!

I wanted to add this news article: Anger at shop's hamster fur coats.(Full article).

"It comes after it was discovered a shop in Scotland was selling coats with lining made out of fur from hamsters.
Several animal charities asked shoppers to avoid the shop in Perthshire after finding out over 100 hamsters were killed for each coat.
One animal charity said the hamsters had come from Russia after being gassed there."

No animal should be skinned alive how cruel. Why do humans do the things they do?  sad.gif

That is more efficient than clubbing, however for the most parts cows are easier. They cannot move around much in their stalls, so it is easier. But killing a smaller animal such as a mink with a bolt gun would be difficult. For the most part they do not tie them up like they do to cows, they leave them in their cages and when it is time to kill them they pick them up to kill them. This could be dangerous and ineffiecent with a bolt gun. I think for a bolt gun to work, they would have to try and change their process completely.

Although it would be easier and less cruel if they change their techniques to a bolt gun, unfortunately the fur industry is probably not willing to make that change. sad.gif

Leather comes from cows that would die anyways. By wearing leather you're just using a part of the animal that would have been wasted anyways. As for fur, many people do not care what had to die to get it.

Animals will be killed. We aren't going to stop it any time soon, if ever. I do my part by not buying fur. If an animal is killed, I believe in this checklist:

1. It must be done humanely and with some compassion for the animal
2. The animal to be killed shall have been raised humanely and with respect.
3. The animal should not be threatened or endangered.
4. The animals parts should not be wasted as that is disgusting and disrespectful.

If all of those things are adhered to, I can live with it. Obviously, this video shows the worst possible thing that could happen. Those individuals involved in these skinnings are the epitome of heartless.

I don't want to start some conspiracy, but have you ever thought that maybe it was the anti-fur people that skinned them alive, and not the fur industry. Why would any company risk its profits by showing someone skinning an animal alive? What better way to try and get people to stop wearing fur than show them that video?
I know I will just get flamed for saying this, but chances are it was anti-fur protesters that made this video, not any fur company.

Agreed a fur company isn't that stupid to let people video tape them.
After hearing some posts i am too afraid to watch the video.

I beleive in the use of animal fur, but not in the stupid rich snob kind of way. For
example when i hunt an animal (with a bow NOT unfair guns) i will skin the
animal, use the meat and some organs, and give what is leftover to my dogs.
The fur is usually made into a blanket to keep me warm when the temps
go well below 0.

A bow is just as unfair. "Fair' would be killing the thing with your bare hands...or giving the animal a bow too.

There's a big difference between hunting and what happens in a case like that video.

Agreed. Hunting with a bow is the same as hunting with a rifle, but the only real differance is that rifles are more likely to kill it on the first shot. Unless you are refering to the use of scopes, then there are some things similair to them for a bow. thumbsup.gif

Actually, a bow and rifle all killon the first shot. My friend's dad dropped a huge moose in BC using a bow. One shot, and the moose didn't get farther than 150 yds.

Nope, it's called fair chase. it's not like we can shoot from a mile away. You need to get in as close as 100 yds to get a shot on an animal. Plus, they have their own advantages.
