I did this as a blog entry and didn't think to start a thread on the topic, so here it is!

I was wondering what the Brits here thought about the CBB racism row. Apparantly India is up in arms over it, over 20,000 people have made complaints and Tony Blair had to address it in Parliment today ( for those that don't know what I'm talking about see here Shilpa Shetty is a Bollywood star from India and is taking part in the UK's celeb big brother...

I think the whole thing is embarrassing to the levels it has reached I've been watching the show and I think it's a massive over reaction and that the aledged racist incidents in the house have been taken out of context. One of the aledged incidents was Danielle asking if it was "customary for Indians to eat with their hands or was that done in China" ---- I think it's really ignorance of the others towards Indian culture not intended racism. Where do you draw the line?

India is saying that this has now taken the relationship between Britian and India back a 100 years

Oh and if you have BBC news 24 on sky or free view - there' as top headline story currently running on the matter if you press the red button. One of the reporters talking about it says the word F*** - BBC haven't censored it yet laugh.gif

I'm not British, and I hope it's okay that I'm American. Ha ha! If Indians want to take issue with someone about their stereotypical eating habits, they should request that Steven Spielberg produce a documentary to counter the bizarre cuisine depicted in "Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom". Where I used to live, one of the restaurant proprietors was struggling to remain open, and had to lower his prices to lure patrons who feared exotic bugs, snakes, and chilled monkey brain dessert trays. This was within the last few years, so that dinner scene with Indy has staying power.

I stopped watching BB after Donny Tourette left. Lol laugh.gif his entrance, made me laugh and cringe at the same time, great TV..
The way he called the waiting crowd “a bunch of dickheads!” lol I couldn’t agree more.

Looks like I wasn't alone
After Tourette left the house and Goody was brought in, the viewing figures for Celebrity Big Brother dropped dramatically from 7.1 million viewers to just 2.8 million

I've tried to avoid this story about racism but I'll look into it, in greater detail.

Channel 4 issue statement

Channel 4 has denied claims that Celebrity Big Brother contestant Shilpa Shetty has suffered racist bullying.
There had been a "cultural and class clash" between three other housemates and the Indian star, the channel said.

This comes after politicians entered the row. Chancellor Gordon Brown, on a visit to India, condemned anything that went against British "tolerance".

Channel 4 and TV regulator Ofcom have had more than 21,000 complaints about treatment of Shetty.

The station said in a statement: "To date there has been no overt racial abuse or racist behaviour directed against Shilpa Shetty within the Big Brother house.

"However there has undoubtedly been a cultural and class clash between her and three of the British females in the house."

The statement added that housemates had constant access to support from Big Brother, and Shetty had "not voiced any concerns of racial abuse".

The 'R' word is a word overused to the point of being ridiculous. But if it has caused a rift between the UK and India back a 100 years then I'd be quite happy with that, then maybe we wouldn't have to put up with those useless call centres in places like Bombay.

I think there is though a case of bullying, I haven't watched big brother much but I heard that it was the 'Bollywood Star' who was doing all the cooking?

And didn't Germain Jackson refer to Jackie or how ever she wants to spell her name..'white trash'?

Although I'm white myself I think Germain is right!

Some of these English people are a reflection of our society today and I'm totally ashamed of their disgusting and moronic behaviour and I'm an Englishman myself.

I've been watching it, I haven't seen any racism at all. Yeah, she's being picked, but is it racist? Doesn't look like it.

Oh sure "white trash" isnt racist. Then again I have to come to accept the fact that it is ok to say anything you want to white people.

I don't consider "white trash" to be racist, it's more social than anything. Besides, it fits the stereotype pretty well.

I'd say there is definitely sexual jealousy involved which may have turned into racism. Shirpa is intelligent and good looking while the rest, really are moronic dumbasses..so I doubt they could tell if they were being racist in the first place.

I mean, Jade Goody? Britain's most famous moron.

Cops to probe BB house of hate

linked-image

CELEBRITY Big Brother bosses may face a POLICE probe over alleged racism and bullying of Indian housemate Shilpa Shetty.
The move comes as complaints contiunue to flood in, reaching a huge 25,000 this evening making it television watchdog Ofcom's most complained about show EVER.
Hertfordshire Police confirmed yesterday that one of the complaints had been made to them — which could spark a criminal inquiry.
They revealed emails have been sent to Channel 4 containing threats against housemates but would not say if it was over alleged racism.
Labour MP Keith Vaz has even tabled a motion in the House of Commons about Shilpa’s ordeal on the Channel 4 reality show.
By 6pm, Ofcom said it had received 19,300 complaints with the rest coming to Channel 4. The number of complaints make it Ofcom's most complained about show ever, beating the BBC’s Jerry Springer: The Opera in 2005.
