SCOTTSBORO, Ala. - A Scottboro couple recently celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary, one of the longest marriages among living people when compared to reports in the 2007 Guinness Book of World Records.

Alonzo, 97, and Beulah Sims, 94, celebrated their anniversary a day early Sunday at the nursing home where they have lived since May 2002.

Without their families' approval, the two teens married in 1927, when he was working at a farm, plowing fields with a mule and picking cotton for 50 cents a day.

The couple, who raised six children, credit their long lives to hard farm work and eating lots of vegetables. They moved frequently to find farm work, going from Paint Rock Valley near Garth to Atchley Bottom in Madison County and then to Woodville in the 1960s.

They said their eight decades of marriage have been virtually free of fussing.

"We've been too busy to fight," Beulah Sims said.

Alonzo Sims retired from farming in 1966 and did janitorial work at Redstone Arsenal until 1972. They also operated service stations in Paint Rock and Woodville for a few years. Now, they spend their time visiting other residents at the nursing home, listening to gospel music, and playing bingo.

"After all these years," he said, "I still enjoy being with her."

Good luck to them.

that is wonderful !!!! I wish more people took commitment as seriously. we've become a instant gratification throw a way society.

people should be tested before marriage . we have to get tested to drive. yet any 2 knuckle heads that think their in love can get married. Real love doesn't start until you look at him or her while she's / he's sleeping and think " how the hell did this happen ?" that's when the work for real love begins.

Your so right Ripley! Marriage seems to have become as disposable as a condom wrapper these days, and it,s really sad! Thats why i posted this artical, to show there are real life people out there that work at and reap the rewards of a loving, happily forever after! I,m so greatfull my hubby and i didn,t give up through the rough times, and there were really rough times! We split a few times but we found our way back to each other and i can,t imagine life without us being togeather now! We have both matured and realised that the things we thought were so important at the time were just ego, silly and such a waste! This couple in the artical are an insperation! And i am filled with so much respect and joy at their amazing exsample! And they are what is truley romantic!
And yes moe they are old! laugh.gif But i bet if you sat and talked with them you would be very surprised and inspired by their lifes adventures and stories! And they are probably more in love with each other now then when they first met! you would witness what a really respectful, good natured, caring relationship is all about! And they have never had to know what it is to be truley alone or lonley! My grandparents had such a great love, my hubby,s grandparents had it and my hubby and i finally found it, and appreciate the gift of each other and we look forward to being just like them! It can be done and the rewards are worth more than anything else on earth! yes.gif thumbsup.gif

If 25 years marriage is a Silver wedding anniversary and 50 years is a Golden wedding anniversary, what is 80 years, anybody know?
