Well I'm just wondering...why do we grow hair in stupid places?
Why do we grow hair under our arms? Seriously what sense does that make?
How about "down there"? What's the point of pubic hair?
And why do men grow hair out of their ears? It's just silly.
This is a place to discuss important matters. And this matter is seriously important to me. At this moment at least.

lol...This is so funny....All I know is that when puberty starts, the hair begins to grow...What the purpose is, I have no idea. In some cultures, the woman don't shave under their arms...And as for the men growing hair out of their ears...I think it's their receding hairline looking for a place to go..

No offense guys...I haven't had my coffee yet...

I'm guessing it's because you sweat more under your arms and around the public area.
And I think you lose a lot of body heat from your ears, so it makes sense. Although only certain men get hair in their ears, maybe we are evolving away from that.
Also, I believe we have hair on our scalps because it's an area that experiences a huge amount of heat loss.

We all have hair in our ears and nose, most of the time it's not as prominent as old man Jenkins down the street. I've always heard the purpose of it is to keep dirt out.

Healthy cilia (nose hairs) beat in a coordinated backward-&-forward motion on an average of sixteen times per second. Biologically, the cilia act as a filter and keep dust and dirt out of the nasal passages. They also draw liquid mucus up from the epithelium by capillary action, and thus help to maintain humidity in the air passages by trapping humidity as one exhales, while evaporation of trapped moisture on the hairs humidifies inhaled air.
Cilia are in motion, beating several times per second. By this action, the ciliated cells push mucus back in towards the oropharynx where it can be either swallowed or ejected, a mechanism much like that by which the cilia in the ear canal remove cerumen and other detritus.
Exposure to cold is thought to slow the vibration of the cilia, contributing to the buildup of mucus; diesel fumes and other pollutants are thought to have similar effect.

I am willing to speculate that hair around an orafice serves to help keep foreign bodies out. Hair in places where we sweat a lot probably serves to help cool us by wicking the sweat away and also probably serves to help collect pheremones.

Bingo. We're finding with more and more studies that we are quite driven by smell when choosing partners. The hair seems to help collect pheremones and retain the scent. While smell because less important as we evolved such hair might have evolved to counteract that loss by collecting scent. It also may help to stop chaffing.

I'm sorry but I have to say this: All the explanations I read in this thread I found to be false.
No offence intended of course..
According to evolution our ancestors were covered in hair......just like the rest of the apes on the planet, this hair began to dissapear slowly but we still have it today...... we still grow a bit of hair today. This hair is meant to give us warmth... just like the rest of the mamals on the planet.

Why did we retain hair in certain areas? The answers are in this thread:
1- To keep orifices clean
2- To wick sweat and facilitate colling
3- To collect signal giving pheremones
4- To retain heat at the top of our heads and protect our brains from getting too cold
That is why we didn't lose all our hair. all the hair that stayed has an evolutionary purpose, otherwise it would disappeared too.

Not being an evolutionary biologist, I don't know the truth of this, but I saw on an old PBS special the theory that we evolved from water-going apes. The places we have significant hair left are places that wouldn't produce drag as we swam.

I was taught that armpit hairs and pubic hairs are there for lubrication. The pit hairs I tend to think that's right. If you've ever engaged in very active sports or otherwise with shaved pits (I had to do that once), you know that it can be downright uncomfortable if you don't have those hairs. The other ones, I'm not so sure.
Nose hairs for air filters. The worse the environment (such as dust; I worked in a mine once upon a time), the more nose hairs. The mine environs were terrible, go in looking blue jean, come out looking gray/white all over. As time passed, I found bushes growing in my nasal passages, and blowing my nose was like blowing out a mud puddle.
It's a bit of humor, anyway.

I myself have already evolved beyond the need for such primitive hair. The only hair on my body is the flowing gold locks on my head. My perfectly symmetrical, chiseled featured head which rests atop my flawless, statuesque body. So there.

dun dun dun dunThat's right, apart from one thing; cilia aren't nose hairs. They're organelles, microscopic structures found in various parts of the body.
Hair is used to keep the cool (by trapping moisture, which makes heat loss more efficient), or it can also insulate the body to keep it warm. It can be used to stop dust or other things being inhaled through your nose or getting in your eyes, as well as providing shade from light. It also helps in retaining pheromones produced by your body.
It has quite a few advantages, and does no harm...it would be strange if evolution removed it.

Why do we have hair "down there"? So we can go to the doctor to get "special shampoo" for that "little bug problem". If you know what I mean. As for armpit hair, it's to keep other people from using your deodorant and soap.
