Please don't close this thread first off please.

Please vote in this poll.

I am curious why do we really pay attention to posts so much here? I am registered to a lot of forums and none have top 10 posters well some do, but people don't really talk much about posts they are at forums to learn and to meet new people and thing like that. I am just curious how many people actually are here for posts to be the top poster and things like that. I have seen a few good threads get closed due to *a way to boost posts*

Like I said this is just a question to get opinions nothing else! original.gif But it seems to some this forum revolves around being the number 1 poster.

Please Don't Close This

I am so afraid of threads getting closed now so thanks all

I voted No because it is just a number. It isn't the amount but the quality of each post. tongue.gif

I said it before on many internet forums quality not quantity, But one day I will reach 2000 one day crying.gif

Why do people get so excited about how many posts others people have to the extent that they chuck around accusations of 'post whoring' and the like - and what an ugly phrase that is. What concern is it of anyone how many posts anyone else has, and what difference does it make to anyone else anyway, as long as they're not gratuitously cluttering up worthwhile threads with inconsequential trivia?

And as for patronisingly informing others that they should be more concerned about 'the quality of their posts' - oh please, find something else to do with your time tongue.gif

but you get your ranking up if you have loads of posts
FLY SPITTA
Yeah I say posts are nothing big it matters what you learn who you meet things like that, that's what matters to me. To be honest this is the only site I ever seen that makes threads saying congratz for every 1000 posts you make. Not that I'm saying it's bad or nothing, but I just been wondering you know seems some people here only care about the number of posts they have.

Honestly, I don't care! If people congratulates you for posting a certain amount, the least you can do is be appreciative, that's it! Other than that, post as much as you want....as long as you're having a hell of a good time.

People have missed a couple of my milestones and I didn't cry. tongue.gif I'm just here to have a little fun and post my thoughts on about... anything. original.gif Some people maybe be labled "n00b" or such but I'll still read their posts and listen. thumbsup.gif Just cause I don't agree with you, doesn't mean I don't read your posts. I've yet to put in action the "ignore function" thought I've been tempted in the past to... w00t.gif

There is nobody to defend the post count? huh.gif I guess SaRuMaN could fix the forum to not show post counts anymore!

Oh there is one supporter the post count lives!

There's one forum i sometimes frequent where the equivalent of 'Jokes, puzzles & humour' doesn't count toward post count ... I don't know if that'd be technically feasible here, but it might alleviate some of the b*tching about 'post whoring' ...

That's exactly how I feel! As long as someone is not reposting the exact same thing or spaming the forums or posting a 1 word post laugh.gif then I think it's fine.
BurnSide
Nope. Hence i close all the congratulatory topics that get made for me. They're just silly and redundant.
At first it was kinda cool. But then, when i first joined up the top poster didn't even have above 5000 posts, and i came from another forum where at least 300 of the members had posts into the 10,000's. Crazy.

What matters is the nature of your post. If you can look back and say you've never made a post you ain't proud off, you've done a good job as a member.

Unfortunately, 'post whoring' which has been mentioned, does happen often even if it is not admitted too. That's why i dislike the game topics, there really is no point to posting 50 pages of one word posts.

Indeed the forum that i mentioned which i was a part of before here did place alot of emphasis on post counts, AND did not have a moderation team. So alot of topics came along with hundreds upon hundreds of one word posts admittedly to raise post counts. In the end, the web admit hid the post counts so only the member himself could see his count. And then after awhile, it was removed completely. I think it worked, post whoring continued but just for silliness rather than racking up the total.
FLY SPITTA
^ Yeah I see what your saying I have like 13,000 posts at a music forum but that's music so I'm sure you know why I have that much laugh.gif also most people there are in the 10,000's . But as you say you don't like game threads I love them the only problem is it's hard to enjoy them because some people say your just trying to boost your posts.

w00t.gif ohmy.gif Now I got my eyes back into my head. I didn't know that a mega super rock/rap star is on this forum. He surpise the heck out of me. BTW, James I love you sig also. Its neat. Anyway it doesn't matter about how much post you got on here. It meeting the people on here that counts. They are the real treasures.

I choose not to vote because of how limited my options are. There are two options for 'no', why is there not more for 'yes'?

I myself do care about my post count, in that which I use it to measure my time and contribution to the forum. Were the post counts deleted I would be bothered because I'd feel like I'd lost an acomplishment on the forum.

I think ALOT of this forums members care about their post counts ALOT more than they'll let on. Some replied in this thread, some didn't. Not naming any names of course - Just something to think about. innocent.gif
747400
Oh now that's cunning ... replying in a thread about post counts ... just to increase your post count ... heh. tongue.gif

Why not have a serious, intellectual post count - for those who care about the quality of their posts - and a silly, trivial post count - for those who are, well, not up to to the same rigorous intellectual standards?
Walken
laugh.gif Would you really want that, seeing as almost 60 percent of your posts were in the jokes and puzzels forum?

I think the best idea ever came from Scar, where your 'rank' (Extra Terrestrial, alien embryo) reflected where your posts were. There would encourage more posting in the On-topic forums, and less in the jokes forum.

Ah thank you Walken my friend, just wanted to confirm if i was one of your targets...
you think i'm bothered in the slightest (a) about post counts in the first place, or ( b ) what you or anyone else might think of the 'quality' of them?

So go ahead and give me all the laugh.gif you want .. oh and btw, puzzels is spelt puzzles. original.gif

I wanted to mention what Scar had brought up, you definately beat me to it there Walken.

I get worried sometimes on the quality of my posts and of course not the number. The thing is I am worried most about my profile which in one way I am restricted with because I use the library computer ( do not own my own, ) and at the same time am grateful to have such contact in the first place. So I am less and less worried by the day about these things... ( trying to keep my bad- a$$ language on a level which everyone can understand ). ---Good question - ( can't vote ) - P.F.- original.gif
Falco Rex
When I first got here I was in a godawful hurry to up my post count. I couldn't help but notice that there were all these people with huge amounts of posts and everyone seemed to sit up and notice whenever they spoke..
So for the first thousand posts or so it was a marathon for me..Somewhere along the line though it occured to me that people weren't noticing these people because they had 3000 posts, they were noticing them because somewhere within those 3000 they actually had something to say. After that it stopped really mattering as far as numbers go..
Nowadays I don't even usually bother to congratulate anyone on reaching a post "Milestone" unless I have a huge amount of love and respect for them already; and I try and play it down a bit whenever anyone tries to do the same for me, because fair is fair, after all.. tongue.gif
But that's just me. If post count is important to you, there's no reason in the world you shouldn't take pride in your volume of work..
distortedpandy
In the beginning I did worry about my post count, but to be honest anymore I really don't care...so I voted no
Paranoid Android
A post is a post. Though not all posts are worthy............

I guess what that means is quality, not quantity. Some of the members here - Irish springs to mind - have relatively small post counts, yet each and every one of his posts is an inspiration.

That's what I think anyway

Regards, PA

*post count increases by one, mwuhahaha*
XSAS

No I don't care about post counts, I think many members are obsessed with how many posts they and others make, I do look at the posts when I see a name I don't recognise but that is purely just to welcome them to UM.

I would be happy to see the post count numbers removed.
nick_fury
I do get just a twinge of pride every time I reach a hundred landmark, and unfortunately tend to judge those I am unfamiliar with by their postcount. But recently I became much less bothered about it, especially as 90% of my last 50 posts have been in the football thread laugh.gif
wrighty
It does not matter where you post whether 90% is in football or 100% is in jokes it's about coming onto the Internet to relax and discuss thing you like with other people, not to be judged about your amount of posts or where about in UM they are.
Raptor
I dont care too much about post counts; I dont tend to post much anyway so I dont even notice it.
747400
Exactly, Wrighty. Some may choose to go onto internet discussion forums for intellectual debate and seek to educate others; some may just want to use it to unwind, to talk about things that interest or amuse them with people that they get along with. Why should one be any more 'valid' than the other?
Bone_Collector
Yes, I do care about my post count; not much but a little, it tells me how much I've written and contributed but never have I made one irrelevant post to boost my post count or felt the need to post more, I feel like posting only when I have something relevant to contribute. I see a tendency here in this forum: people with a higher post count tend to get valued more; not necessarily for the quality of their posts. I think most people here DO care about post count and yes: I too dislike all those game threads floating around, I don't say they aren't fun at all but I observe a lot of members use it primarily to boost their post count. I observe that there are a good number of people who MOSTLY post in such threads in the 'General Off-Topic Discussion' and the 'Jokes Forum' mostly making one or two word posts; I mean it's entirely upto them but it does reduce the overall interest generated by the forums. Just my opinion.
wrighty
Some people use the jokes threads to boost their posts but some do it justvto sit have a laugh, relax after a hard day, make other people laugh, get involved. There are many members on here that spend alot of time in the news sections and then go into the jokes thread.
isis-999
The only reason i look at a count is too if a person is new, Then i tell then welcome. Other then that i look if someone makes a crazy post just see how long they have been here. But the number it's self really does not matter much to me.
wunarmdscissor
lol this made me check where i am in the board. 17th is no bad given the amount of people on these boards lol.

i dont post THAT pften but ive been a member for a couple of years so i think thats why.
FLY SPITTA
To be honest I think more people care about posts than we think.... grin2.gif
NJC
me don't care,me just post whatever I want
wrighty
I did at first for about the first 300 but couldn't care a less now.
Mr Ed
I am not sure if someone has said this before, so I apologise if they have...

So we have 39/48 people who don't really care about posts.
This is very interesting as everyday there is a congratulations thread made for someone who has hit 1000, 2000 etc...

I know there are several excuses for doing this, but it does show that many people consider post counts to be important.

If people really didn't care then they wouldn't make the threads or congratulate people in them.

After all, if post count means nothing, why would you congratulate someone for posting a certain amount of times?

Seems odd to me...
Rhomphaia
For myself personally, I couldn't give a s**t about how many posts I have. Really, I couldn't. At the moment I am rather const- Nevermind.
Seriously though, for me, it is not the number of posts that matter. It is their quality. If someone posts a thousand times and they are just spewing ash, then it counts for essentially nothing. However, 1000 good posts is something to be congratulated.
As for myself, I only want enough to lose this 'Conspiracy Theorist' title...
Walken
Exactly Ed. People clearly care about post counts a lot more than they'll let on in a thead like this.
Mr Ed
Agreed. Interesting how some of the people who have replied 'no', in this thread have made congratulation threads.
747400
It's called irony, Ed.

*taps nose*
Mr Ed
I would also venture so far to say slightly hypocritcal as well.
747400
Ah, it's just a joke ... it's all just a joke ....

...none of it really matters does it. original.gif
Mr Ed
I know grin2.gif, but when people say they don't care about post counts, then make congratulatory threads for reaching a certain number of posts, or write congratulations in them, then there is obviously something odd going on when they then say they don't care at all...
