Full Version: Resurrecting old threads

ok, I'm not sure if this is worth starting a poll over, and I'm wondering if the MOD's might not close it, but I was just looking through some old threads and some of the topics there were awesome.

But there seems to be some kind of stigma attached to resurrecting old threads, like people cringe when they see the word "bump". So hence this poll - what do you guys think? Is bumping a waste of space? Let us know, ok.

I don't really see it as a bad thing, for a couple of reasons.
1 - New members, looking for specific topic items (ie: Elvis sightings, headless ghosts, etc) stumble upon these topics and bring them back.

2 - sometimes, we might miss a subject, and in looking find something to add to the discussion.

The only grief I have, is when someone ressurects a topic just to add: grin2.gif . That is just stupid. And recently, I saw someone who did this, or added just one line of text, to a bunch of threads. My suspicion was 'post count syndrome' or PCS.

Of course, I'm not accusing you of that PA. Sometimes there are really good topics buried in the archives. I just like twisting your chain a bit.

I have mixed feelings about this:

I would rather see a topic resurrected than a new one started about the same subject.

I hate to see topics from 4 years ago resurrected and all the links are dead.

I hate to see a "Happy Birthday" one come back 2 months after the event.

I don't think any thing actually gets deleted here on UM maybe there should be a cut off point where they all drift away into obscurity.

It think it's ok to resurrect an old thread if the topic is still relevant and there is something to be gained by bringing it up again. Usually there is news on subjects which haven't been discussed in a while that hasn't been posted yet. As long as it makes sense to resurrect a topic, then i'm fine with it.

An example of an exception to this is when someone bumped a topic started four years ago about an issue being resolved on a version of the forum software which we stopped using shortly afterwards, just to say 'well that's good to hear'. Another person recently posted a 'hello' in a very old welcome thread for someone who hadn't been on the forum for three years.

Bumping topics like that is usually a case of someone trying to increase their post count by looking through ancient topics for something that is easy to post a reply to, threads like that which have been resurrected are usually closed or removed.

Sometimes an interesting topic may have been lost in the rush as a lot of new threads were added and it may have been bumped down the page until it disappears into the obscurity of page 2, so sometimes it can be interesting to revive something to bring it back to people's attention.

I totally agree with Saruman, in fact, I have been trailing through the archives in Ghosts and Hauntings recently, as all the recent new threads in that section leave a lot to be desired, so I thought I would go and look for some of the more challenging threads and see whats there.

I also, for my own amusement, go right back to the beginning and have a read through, it's interesting to compare the 'then and now' thing. happy.gif

I agree that it's ok as long as it's relevan, or whoever is posting has something informative to say.

If its on old thread and its just to say Hi or whatever then maybe thats a bit pointless.

The thing you have to remember is that the new people will want to have a good read through of everything thats on here, and sometimes you get that caught up in what you;re reading you want to post a reply, forgetting that you're in an old thread. I've done it a few times myself - although I generally try to add something constructive or I don't bother.

I generally don't think it's that big a deal - there are more important things to think about other than who has brought back a previous thread. but if some people don't like then maybe there could be some kind of restriction.

It is much better to bring up an old topic and see whether or not your question is answered within the old posts. Rather then making up new topics on the same thing.

Hence 11:11

We had so many threads on this. What is the signifigance of 11:11?
I keep seeing the numbers 11:11. I mean just use serach feature okay. yes.gif
