PATNA, India (Reuters) - Scores of Indian children attending a school located in a graveyard were having recurring nightmares about ghosts and have appealed to authorities to shift them from the site, officials and residents said.

"I have stopped going to school after many dead people walked out of their graves and came into my dreams, ordering me to reach school on time," said six-year-old Raqib Ansari.

This week, hundreds of children at the school in the eastern state of Bihar, accompanied by their parents, marched to the office of a senior district official, asking for the school to be shifted away from the Muslim graveyard.

About 200 children study in the makeshift school set up several years ago after authorities refused to donate land for a school in Kohari village, 125 miles southwest of the state capital, Patna.

Some parents say their children's sleep and health is being affected by dreams of ghosts.

"They used to play and study together and finish their lunch boxes while sitting on top of concrete graves but now the ghosts have come to haunt them at night and they are falling ill," said one father, Riyazuddin Ansari.

"We have no choice as the nearest other school is at least four hours away," he said by phone from Kohari.

There are more than 100 tombs in the graveyard but dozens of fresh graves -- most of them shallow -- have been dug in recent months, further crowding the burial ground.

Authorities in densely populated Bihar said they were trying to provide new land for the school.

"Maybe the dead are not enjoying the noise inside the graveyard any more, but we are looking into the matter," said Ram Yash Singh, a village council official.

Building a primary school on a burial ground. Fantastic idea. While we're at it, why not give the kids one of those puzzles that opens a portal to Hell? And some Chucky dolls to play with.

Yeah and while we're at it give the students all copies of "Dawn of the Dead" And "Saw 1,2 and3" What the hell were they thinking the stupid SOB's? I too thought they were more spiritual than that.

Evacuate the area immediately.

Why did the ghosts haunt these children this week?
The school was build a few years ago.
Maybe it is due to one of the fresh graves buried here.
Hope the authorities will check out these fresh graves soon.

Its not the Indians doing it, its the government, and most of the time, when an Indian is given something, they really have no choice but to take it or do without.

I think it's hysteria.

Some kid told some other kid it was haunted and blammo! None of them can sleep!

Especially if they've been playing in the grave yard and eating lunch there for a couple of years!

Someone has spread something in the mind of these kids. It'll blow over and things will get back to normal for them.

reminiscent of the satanic cults hysteria at Midwestern USA schools eh ethyl?

Something similar. Of course, there aren't many schools in the US that share grounds with a graveyard. Well not that I'm aware of anyway. LOL

Why would anyone build a school near a graveyard in the first place, They had to know this would scare the kid's......

Still, it's rather amusing that the ghosts were busy ordering the six year-old child to get to school on time. tongue.gif

mabe there is a dead-one ammongst you and he is making it so dead people can eat children or satin is working with teachers to send bad kids to hell. who knows?
shadow_flame
well, this opens much possibilities in education. if some kid is bad, they can scare him with ghosts!
and just think of Halloween stories there.

Building a school in a graveyard is asking for trouble. I've read many a story of houses haunted in this way.

I have found cemetaries to be nothing but places of peace and quiet. I occasionally work as a gravedigger in an old cemetary too crowded for a backhoe, and I have dug too close to the "neighbor", exposing collapsed coffins(back before the days of burial vaults). Also, every July 4th, I participate in a volleyball tournament that is held right next to a graveyard, we are constantly chasing the ball amoungst the headstones, and use them for backrests and seats during lunch and between games.

I'm not saying that cemetaries can't be haunted(though I tend to doubt it), but just because it's a cemetary doesn't automatically MAKE it haunted.

Given the time frames, I think this story is a product of hysteria.
