Got to be something that has the mange, I cant imagine a new breed just turning up in Seattle.

Loosen up on the trigger there, Tex. You're being a little quick to declare it a new animal. Loren Coleman, who you got the story and picture from, isn't calling it a new creature. It's clear he thinks it is a known species.

Here is another picture, and more info:

"Justyn forwarded me a picture today snapped from outside of an office building in the seattle area - we're both fairly convinced it's the missing link...
Other slightly more realistic guesses as to the identity of said beastie include:
* kangahippopossumouse
* common pigmy hippo, native to the PNW
* diseased miniature baby hippopotamus
* la chupacabra
* diseased marmet
* Naked mole rat
Personally I find Chupacabra the most convincing. Thoughts?

I never said I believed it...It's from the site where the picture originated....
For the record, I think it looks like a hippo.

My guess... squirrel with mange. Look at the posture. Look at the shape of the ears. Look at the paws.
There was a stray dog living in my area for a while. It was categorized as a "mystery" animal and looked strange as could be. When it was caught, a vet examined it, announced that it was a dog, and treated it for mange. Someone adopted it. Now that the fur's grown back it looks like a perfectly normal medium-sized, brown dog.

I disagree.
The snout on the critter's face is very much like a hippo's. The squirrel's is oval shaped, and "connected" to the head. And, where's the tail on the critter if it is a squirrel?

I'm fairly certain it's a squirrel with mange. The nose, the ears, the hind legs. It's a squirrel. And the tale is tucked underneath or on the other side. Here's another picture of a squirrel with full-body mange. Compare.

Thanks for your intelligent input to the topic and your slander of my mother. I'm sure it'll be noted by the moderators and used against you in the future.
As for the topic, it's looks naff all like a hippo, come on people, use your brains. It's definitely a rodent, from the shape of the head and body position I'd suggest a squirrel, as have some others here.

um... except that a naked mole rat lives in the desert... and by the looks of the foliage around this poor animal, its clearly not a desert critter.

The ears of the Hippotamus-looking creature aren't looking like squirrels ears. It look more like hippo ears, the shape is a little bit different. And, if you look at the nose of the Hippotamus-looking creature, his nose dont have the same shape as a squirrels, it is flatter (?) and larger than a squirrel's one.

My first guess was, "Ewwww, someone got photos of Rosie O'Donnell sunbathing!"
Then I realized that Rosie O'Donnell nekkid would be even uglier.
So, my guess is a squirrel with mange.
It's well documented that the River Hippos of the Pacific Northwest, as found in the Duwamish, Stillaguamish, Puyallup and Keekoutes Rivers died out about 1,000 years ago, when the natives hunted them to extinction.
None have been seen since --- except by those who fall prey to excess alcohol or the whims of people with Adobe Photoshop. <smirk>

I really can't take anything called a "Kangahippomouse" seriously.
It's always something mundane and normal.
Why do they use such a silly name anyway? Or a "Boing boing monster", did it escape from some 80's arcade game or a cartoon movie-like nightmare? >.>

The squirrel option seems the most probable, however at first I was unsure because it does not seem to have a tale. However after seeing photos the squirrel with minge it seems that the majority of the squirrel's tail is fur, so I would guess it's tail was most likely between it's legs.

It is probably a Mountain Beaver with mange, because, if you look at the ears, the feets and the hands, those look pretty similar, as much as the entire body looks.

No, they really couldn't. "What shall we call this lil' sad looking fellow?" *combines different names in a kindergarten fashion*
"That's
such a good idea!" And the room goes crazy, applauds like it's the last concert of a soon-to-disband band they all will miss. And at that, we arrive at where we are today... It might be they were just lazy though. That's pretty common too.
And that Mountain Beaver is cute, but it looks so very sad. :[ So cuddly...

I don't think it's a naked mole rat. If you look closely near its hind quaters, there are little black patches of fur. Naked mole rats don't have any hair there; they only have hair on thier faces. It's most likely some small rodent typically found in the American Northwest with mange. As to whether it's a squirrel or moutain beaver, I don't know.
