What kind of scary are you looking for? A extremely haunted ghost story will do.
Just throwing something out there.
Sorry, but I really can't help you.

It depends on how good your imagination is. And if you want gore or more of a thriller. I like
Phantoms by Dean Koontz, because if you relaly get into the story, you can question what is underneath the ground all around us.
Desperation by Stephen King is pretty good, too. I will try to think of others for you.

You want a really scary book??? Read "Hostage to the Devil" by Malachi Martin - long book, five different cases, but I will tell you this, it will stay on your mind for years and will make you wonder about the invisible...!

I recently read Intensity by Dean Koontz. It isn't a ghost story, but it was pretty.... intense! From the first page. Want something a little more paranormal? The Great And Secret Show by Clive Barker was pretty good (another recent read for me).

Ohhhhhhhhh the book is much more detailed (MUahahahahahahaha). I also think it's better to see the movie first because the story does jump around a lot. That will help you follow the book better.

The Monkey's Paw is a horror short story by author W. W. Jacobs. It was published in England in 1902.
The story is based on traditional stories in which three wishes are granted. In the story, the paw of a dead monkey is a talisman that grants its possessor three wishes, but the wishes come with an enormous price.

While no book I have ever read has actually scared me or seemed particularly scary, books such as IT or Desperation by Stephen King come quite close. Dean Koontz has already mentioned also has a few good ones. They are the only two authors that I`ve read who's books come close to being scary.

it depends on if you want a typically scary read. if so, then go with some mentioned.
if you want something really disturbing, and not as just blatantly scary, maybe try...
american psycho, by brett easton ellis
blindness, by josé saramago
zodiac, by robert graysmith
they're all great books that really dig deep into your psyche and shake the sh** out of it.

My personal favorite, The Stand - by Stephen King.
Also, The Shining scared the pants off of me. However, it's been made into movies several times, so it may be old hat by now. The book was better than any movie, though.

Pretty much read anything by Edgar Alan Poe... he has a corner on the scary market.
Lot's of folks have mentioned Steven King (I think King has written one of the most brilliant books of the 20th century--the Stand--and one of the worst books of all time, Tommyknockers).
In reality, as much as I liked The Stand, King isn't one of my favorite authors. BUT, that being said, King and Peter Straub wrote a book together called The Tallisman... that was pretty scary. Some of Kings short stories are pretty scary too. Langoliers comes to mind for one of his really good shorts.

I agree 100 percent! I adored The Stand--it WAS brilliant, but I hated The Tommyknockers. Geesh. So glum and it went nowhere.

My offering of "A Clockwork Orange" also qualifies more as "disturbing" than scary.
I'm kinda with Missmellswell....I burned out on King after Christine. And they make his books into the WORST movies I've ever seen.
Straub's Ghost Story was awesome....

Yeah, I liked Ghost Story, too. The movie wasn't that hot.
However, they HAVE made some good movies out of King's books: Carrie (a classic); Misery; Shawshank Redemption (it was actually a short story and my vote for the best movie of that year); The Green Mile (another one of my favorites--read it!); The Shining (Jack Nicholson stole the show); and The Stand mini-series, which was better than I thought it would be; Salem's Lot (I loved the old TV mini series with David Soul--very spooky); The Dead Zone (not too bad a movie, wasn't great, but didn't stink, either)...I know I'm missing a few good ones, yet.
He has had some stinkers--I never liked the Pet Cemetery movies--but these movies were outstanding in my opinion.

I'd have to agree with you on your choices Howdy...
It's the Christines, Cujos, Cats Eyes, Dreamcatchers, Pet Semitary's etc etc that I disliked (OMG I've seen an awful lot of bad movies)

The Stand and The Talisman, in my opinion are King's best, but neither of them are true horror stories. They are fantasy with some horror. They are awesome, but if you want his scariest works, stick with IT or Pet Cemetary. IT is the better of the 2 (Number 3 in my favorite of his works) and Pet Cemetary being the scarier.

Ok, so far I ordered It, a clockwork orange, phantoms ( which I might have read already. Not sure though. ), desperation,, and lightning. The library won't let me take out hostage to the devil. Don't no why. I was thinking about buying it. It's 17.00 dollars. Is it worth it? I don't want to spend my alowence on a crappy book.

I found a box of books and ended up reading Necroscope by Brian Lumley, there were a few in there I read and gave to my sister in law to read. I'm glad I found that box , but now wish I had it so I could reread them.
it's a bit involved to explain but an easy enough read really.
