Watchmen Casting Confirmed
Wilson officially outed as Nite Owl.

US, July 24, 2007 - Although Patrick Wilson coyly tried to dodge confirming that he's been cast in the long-anticipated Watchmen movie, he was nevertheless outed as Nite Owl yesterday by a co-star.

IGN was among the press outlets invited last night to the Walnut, Ca. set of director Neil Labute's thriller Lakeville Terrace, where we had the chance to talk to co-stars Wilson and Kerry Washington.

Wilson smiled when pressed about Watchmen, but he did subtly acknowledge the casting at one point. He was interviewed inside an elementary school auditorium where, on a wall across from where Wilson was sitting, there was a collection of kid's artwork. While being grilled about the Watchmen casting rumors, Wilson pointed towards one of the artworks, which was titled "Owl's Hollow." Wilson then chuckled, "But I didn't say anything."

Wilson's leading lady Kerry Washington was more direct. Indeed, she unwittingly outed him as Nite Owl! (Ironically, Washington wasn't even asked about the subject.) "I keep teasing him," Washington began. "Whenever he eats candy or something, I go, 'You're playing a superhero. I don't think you should be eating pretzels.'"

When reminded that Nite Owl is supposed to be paunchy, Washington laughed, "That's what he always says. But I always go, 'Yeah, but you still want to be defined.'"

So there you have it. Patrick Wilson IS Nite Owl. End of story.

I havent read the novel personally but i am looking forward to getting my hands on it. For anyone who has read it any thoughts on the impending movie or how you would cast the film? Also is the novel worth reading?

Watchmen
(March 6th 2009)
Along with a con-exclusive poster, viewable here, Director Zack Snyder turned up and confirmed already locked aspects about the film's 1985 period setting and R-rating. The film is relying on mostly practical effects, except for the Mars and Antarctica scenes which will predominantly be CG. He confirmed all the casting talk so far, adding that Steven McCaddy ("A History of Violence") plays Hollis. Crudup as Dr. Manhattan will be a fully 3D CG version utilising motion capture, whilst The Comedian character will be seen at various ages - from 19 through til his sixties - all played by Morgan but aged/de-aged through technology. Snyder wants to include the pirate story, and they're working on how to fit it in now. They're using the original artwork as the base for the film's action/visuals, but even though the sets are stylised it WON'T be like "300" or "Sin City", rather more like "Seven" with a real world setting. Asked about Moore keeping his name on the film, Snyder says Moore said a long time ago he wanted his name not attached but his "deepest hope" is that Moore will watch the film one day and say "they didn't f**k it up that bad".

I'm kinda iffy on the aging/de age thing it looked really crummy on the x-men 3 movie i like the last quote about Moore though lol

SDCC 07: Snyder On Watchmen
300 director confirms casting choices, rating for the forthcoming adaptation.
by Todd Gilchrist

- On Friday, July 27, 2007, Zack Snyder confirmed the casting for almost all of the major roles in his forthcoming adaptation of Watchmen. Billy Crudup (Almost Famous, Mission: Impossible III) will play Dr. Manhattan, Matthew Goode (Match Point) will plays Ozymandias, Jackie Earle Haley (Little Children) will play Rorschach, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (TV's Supernatural) will play The Comedian, Malin Ackerman (Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle) will play Silk Spectre II, Patrick Wilson (Phantom Of the Opera) will play Nite Owl, and Stephen McHattie (300) will play Hollis Mason.

Addressing a crowd of almost 6000, Snyder described his history with the material. "The thing that's awesome about the material and the reason it resonates is that a lot of people when they first read Watchmen, it was kind of about where they were in the world when they first read it," he said. "When I read it, it sort of legitimized a way of thinking for me that I thought was pretty awesome and it kind of combined all of the things I felt comic books can be, as far as being intellectual, being action, [and] representing something bigger than just what's on the page - not just being about the drawings but being about the ideas as well."

"Those are huge and cool concepts that need to be nurtured," Snyder continued. "When I was approached at first they were asking me if I wanted to make Watchmen into a movie and I said no, that's crazy talk. But then I thought about it, and I went to the first meeting... [they said] "what we're going to do is update the movie and set it in modern times and see if our current political problems and-or world will be superimposed onto Watchmen. I went back to everybody and I said 'is Watchmen better if it's updated? I don't know if Watchmen should go to the people, or the people should go to it.' People said "I think Watchmen speaks to our current climate," and I said that's cool, but I said 'isn't it cooler to make a movie that the audience and people who are watching go 'you know what I think?' I'd much rather do that than tell them what I think."

Snyder also confirmed that the movie would likely be rated R, keeping with the mature tone of the source material. "With Watchmen, I talked with the studio and said this doesn't feel like PG-13, and it wasn't like I thought about it either, I thought 'this is it'. If you read the book, this is what happens, so that's when we started saying R-rated superhero movie, which I think is pretty cool." After asking the crowd what other R-rated comic book adaptations were previously produced, Snyder continued, "if you say it's an adult movie, whatever that is, thematically it lives in that world. I think that's cool; if you're at a place in your life where you need Watchmen, you'll go find it. We're not going to make it accessible to teenyboppers for marketing reasons."

Watchmen Casting Comparison
From page to screen, how do Zack Snyder's picks add up?
by Scott Collura

US, August 3, 2007 - Now that the cat is out of the casting bag in regards to director Zack Snyder's Watchmen adaptation, it seems like a good time to take a comparative look at how the actors shape up -- vis a vis how they match up to the characters from the classic Alan Moore/Dave Gibbons comic book series. From Rorschach to Ozymandias to the Comedian and beyond, how spot on are Snyder's casting choices? Let's see:

Rorschach

linked-image

Actor: Jackie Earle Haley

Do They Match Up? Heck, yeah. Haley, who is a former child actor best known for his turn in The Bad News Bears, is ideally suited for the role of Walter Kovacs (a.k.a. Rorschach) not just because of his unique physical appearance, but also thanks to his turn as a sex offender in 2006's Little Children. That film revived the actor's career and got him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination, and it also helps bring an air of prestige to Snyder's film. Oscar nominated actors in Watchmen?! Hurm.

Does He Need a Costume Update? No way, but it'll be interesting to see how Snyder achieves Rorschach's ever-changing mask and odd manner of speaking.

Back-Up Player: With that head of hair, Danny Bonaduce certainly could have taken a stab at this character. But seriously, a pre-Bond Daniel Craig was at one time rumored to be up for the part (pre-Snyder). Think of the possibilities…

Doctor Manhattan

linked-image

Actor: Billy Crudup

Do They Match Up? Somehow, the Crudup casting is disappointing after the apparent near miss that would have had Keanu Reeves in the role (the actor apparently wanted too much money) of the god-like Doctor Manhattan. Snyder seems intent on creating Manhattan via CGI and motion-capture, so the likeness of Crudup to the character seems less important than the actor's ability to channel Manhattan's cold, inhuman cadences. And yes, Crudup, most recently spotted in pictures like The Good Shepherd and Mission: Impossible III, certainly has the acting chops to play the born-again Dr. Jon Osterman.

Does He Need a Costume Update? What costume?! The real question is whether or not Warner Bros. will allow Snyder to sneak in some full frontal Doc Manhattan action, just like in the comic…

Back-Up Player: Keanu would've been cool, though to hear Doctor Manhattan go, "Woahhh!" would have been odd.

Nite Owl

linked-image

Actor: Patrick Wilson

Do They Match Up? Ummm, kinda sorta? The thing is, Nite Owl is generally depicted in the comic book as being a paunchy, middle-aged former superhero (who can't get it up unless he puts on his old costume, by the way). And Wilson, lately of Little Children as well as films like Hard Candy and Running with Scissors, is anything but doughy. But this raises another question regarding the Watchmen casting, which is that Snyder has chosen to cast young even though the characters are mostly seen in their middle-aged days (though some flashbacks to their youth also figure in the film). He says he'd rather "age" or "de-age" the actors as necessary, which means Wilson may yet get his beer-belly in this film. Either way, Nite Owl's alter ego Dan Dreiberg is one of the deeper characters in the story, and Wilson is absolutely suited to pull off his angst -- and his derring-do. 60-year-old actor Stephen McHattie (300), meanwhile, will be playing the first Nite Owl, Hollis Mason.

Does He Need a Costume Update? Absolutely, and Snyder has already said he's getting one, making the point that modern superhero films like Spider-Man and Batman have taken the whole notion of the comic book costume to a new level. You just can't wear tights and goggles anymore, especially with a paunch.

Back-Up Player: As good as Wilson is, we still can't help but wonder if maybe this character would be better served by an older-looking actor, like Joaquin Phoenix for example, who was actually rumored in connection with the role at one point.

Silk Spectre

linked-image

Actor: Malin Akerman

Do They Match Up? Laurie Juspeczyk, a.k.a. the Silk Spectre, is an important role in this film because it is, really, one of only two major female characters in the tale. And the casting of Akerman is a bit of a question mark, since we really don't know much about her -- aside from the fact that she's done a bunch of TV appearances and has a couple of high-profile movies coming up (The Invasion, The Heartbreak Kid). Meanwhile, no word yet on who'll play Laurie's mom, Sally Jupiter (Juspeczyk), who was the original Silk Spectre.

Does She Need a Costume Update? Yes. Even Rorschach complained in the comic that he didn't care for the Silk Spectre's costume (though for different reasons than why we don't like it). The get-up in the comic looks essentially like a cocktail dress with a pair of earrings, and that just won't do when fighting thugs and trying to stop the end of the world.

Back-Up Player: Kate Winslet was thought to have nabbed the part just last month, which would have not just adhered to the "skewing older" casting notion, but also would have tied up the trinity of Little Children actors in this film.

The Comedian

linked-image

Actor: Jeffrey Dean Morgan

Do They Match Up? Maybe. Unless you're a fan of Grey's Anatomy or Supernatural, you probably don't really know who Morgan is. And that's fine, because we really don't need to know our Watchmen actors -- in fact, we'd rather they not be played by stars for the most part. So as long as Morgan can play Edward Blake, the doomed cold-hearted b****** who fights the good fight and enjoys it way too much, then he's good by us.

Does He Need a Costume Update? Not really, at least not his primary leather-ish costume. His early era jokester-esque duds, however, will have to be revised.

Back-Up Player: Well, Snyder's 300 star Gerard Butler had been rumored to be up for this role for a time there, so one can't help but be disappointed by his lack of involvement in this film. And yet, word on the street is that Snyder is campaigning to shoot the Tales of the Black Freighter comic-within-a-comic sequences of Watchmen to include on the DVD release of the film, and if so he allegedly wants to cast Butler as the lost sailor from that tale.

Ozymandias

linked-image

Actor: Matthew Goode

Do They Match Up? Probably. Here's another relative unknown as far as most audiences are concerned. The British Goode has shown up in Woody Allen's Match Point and the recent thriller The Lookout, each time playing a variation on scumbags that weren't quite as nuanced as the role of Adrian Veidt would require. Veidt, suffice to say, has big plans for the planet Earth in Watchmen, and as suave and handsome as he must be (which Goode can do in his sleep), the character must also have an edge of sinister megalomania.

Does He Need a Costume Update? Ozymandias would probably translate to the modern comic-book movie better than most of the other Watchmen cast, if only because his costume has a metallic, armored feel to it that is more in line with today's sensibilities.

Back-Up Player: Jude Law, a big Watchmen fan himself, was long expected to play the character. What happened there, who can say? But an even more amazing casting choice would've been to nab Tom Cruise for the role of the Tom Cruise-esque Ozymandias. That too was rumored at one point, though -- of course -- it proved too good to be true.
