I've always had a fascination with eagles. I came across this and I loved it so much I had to post it! Not sure if it's in the right topic so feel free to move if needed. XO, Jody

Isaiah 40:28-31

The eagle is a symbol used many times in Scripture, in fact, it is mentioned 38 times throughout the Bible. We can learn some important lessons from this majestic creation of God. Eagles have a wing span of 2 meters and are around 90 cm. tall. The eagle mates for life and use the same nest for life. This nest is built in a safe place, often on the ledge of a sharp cliff. It is built to last and the largest nest reported is 9 ½ feet wide and 20 feet deep.

When the babies are born, both parents assume responsibility for their care. They are gentle parents, sitting on the eggs for one month. The parents bring food up to the nest and feed them small pieces of meat. Within 45 days they can weigh nearly 40 times their birth weight. At three months they get special feathers for flying and a new learning experience begins. The mother eagle flies into the nest and begins to thrash around causing a great commotion. Eventually one of the babies will fall out of the nest and begin heading for the earth below. Never having used his wings before, he's not really sure what to do, but does do lots of flapping while heading straight down! Just before the baby hits the ground, the mother eagle flies underneath in order to 'catch' the baby on her powerful wings and she flies him safely back to the nest. This continues on day after day until all the babies learn to fly.

There are two verses in scripture that actually mention this routine of the eagle. In Deuteronomy 32:10,11 Moses reminds the children of Israel how God cared for them and guarded them just "like an eagle that stirs up its nest and hovers over its young, that spreads its wings to catch them and carries them on its pinions." Again in Exodus 19:4 God says that "He will carry the children of Israel on eagles' wings".

We can get very comfortable in our 'nest'. Perhaps that could be our way of doing things, our way of thinking, our opinions, our way of living life. Then when God comes and 'stirs up our nest' we get upset. We don't always identify this as a growing experience. Sometimes if we were really honest, we really don't want to grow. We get very complacent and satisfied with where we are and any interruptions are viewed as negative. But God wants us to fly - to become all that He intends us to become. He never stirs up our nest without good reason!

The eagle can see a rabbit two miles away. It can soar up to two miles above the ground and can fly at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour. They have a separate eyelid which slides across the eye sideways in order to keep the eye clean and free from dust as they fly. Their bones are hollow and therefore light of frame. Their frame has cross ribs like steel bars in sky scrapers. The eagle has 7000 feathers. The back feathers are as long as the head feathers. Their beak is black until age of 3 years and then turns golden.

When eagles are about 30 years old they go through a renewal process. They find a secret place high in the mountains and begin to claw at their face and tear out the feathers that have been damaged over the years. As a result, it bleeds badly. But this is necessary for the eagle in order to renew its strength. If it did not do this it would not be able to live to its normal 60 years of age.

Psalms 103:5 says "who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagles." A time of renewal is necessary for every child of God. A time when we get rid of what is weighing us down, holding us back, aging us spiritually. A time to give up the sinful habits, to give in to the Holy Spirit in whatever way He is convicting us. We need to do this even to the point of renewal with pain! Some things we hold on to so tightly that to let go, actually causes us pain. But in order to have the long, powerful, useful spiritual life that God plans for us, we need to do that. It will renew our spiritual youthfulness.

When the eagle is free to soar in God's creation, they are the cleanest of birds. They were created to be free and to soar to great heights. They were not meant to remain close to the earth in the lowlands. They were created to soar. When eagles are held in captivity, they become one of the dirtiest birds.

God has created us to remain pure and holy and conformed to his image. Don't allow the freedom we are to experience in Him, to be compromised by spending too much time in worldly thinking, activities, mindsets. Remain clean!

Eagles do not fly like other birds, they don't flap their wings but rather soar. Flapping their wings would use incredible amounts of their own strength and endurance and they would require so much more food as fuel if they didn't soar. Instead they sit on a high ledge and wait for the right wind currents to come. When the time is right, they take off and soar upward. Effortlessly, because they have waited for the right time. There is a special 'up going' wind, that they ride as it circles higher and higher toward the sky.

What a lesson for God's children to learn. How often do we waste strength by jumping out too soon and 'flapping our wings', instead of waiting for God's timing. Waiting is not a popular concept in these days of instant everything! But when we wait on the Lord - wait for His timing - wait for His answers - wait for His direction, then we can soar to new heights and fly to new places.

"Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength, they will soar on wings like eagles: they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not faint."

We have a pair of eagles that live down the road from us. We got to watch their baby grow last summer, but I haven't seen a new baby this year.

I once saw a pair of eagles locked in a mating flight. The flew one above the other reaching out with their talons until they came together and grasp their talons. They then spun around and around in the air falling until they let go. It one of the most incredible things I have ever seen.

We have a two headed eagle in our flag.. *is proudz*

They are very beautiful creatures!

A while back, it was reported in a local newspaper that what appeared to be an eagle was flying wild, it was swooping down and taking things like small cats.

I never saw an update on the story so maybe that eagle was captured.

I'm a bird lover, and bred and raised parrots for years. I love watching birds and find them fascinating.

I used to live on Whidbey Island in Washington state where both bald and golden Eagles are more than plentiful. It was really cool to sit in my livingroom and watch them pluck sparkling silver salmon out of the bay at high tide. Very cool, they're extremely powerful, big and sleek.

However, when you live around a very large population of them, they can be ummm... irritating. I had to hide my garbage cans in the garage or they'd accend on them and rip them apart trying to get at the leftover pizza. They'd raid the blue Heron rookery next door which was made for some ear splitting noise (the barn owls raided the nests at night. It was a 24 hour headache). The worst was when a seal or sea lion would wash up dead on the beach. 20-30 of those eagles would decend on the beach and fight over the carron. It was actually a little scary. I certainly didn't like my then 5 year old to go outside when that was happening.

One of the more worrisome potential problems I had was that my house was built over the garage and it was exceptionally high up; about 20 feet, making the livingroom windows level with a utility pole right out front. There was a Golden Eagle that liked to sit on top of that pole and gaze in through the windows at what I'm sure was his idea of a tasty snack. My blue and gold Macaw probably looked like a festive dessert. I was always terrified that enormous Golden would decide to try and fly into the house. Not sure what I'd have done with a raptor with a 10ft wing span in my livingroom. haha. Luckily, he never tried, but I could see in his beady little eyes he was thinkin' about it. laugh.gif

All in all they're pretty cool, but after living around a huge population of them, they're not as mystical and majestic as I once thought they were. But being a bird lover, I do still get a thrill watching them catch salmon and in flight. They just forget their manners on dry land. haha.

My grandfather once found a baby eagle that had fallen or been kicked out of his nest, this was in russia before they imigrated to canada. He took care of and raised the eagle, they called him tchulla because thats what it sounded like he was saying when he did his eagle speak. My grandfather had a real gift with all sorts of animals and even some of the most wild ones trusted him instinctively. He also didn,t believe in keeping them in cages when they were well enough to defend themselves, and tchulla was free to come and go as he pleased and he would take off sometimes for weeks at a time, but he,d always return and stay a few days for a visit now and then! The thing is he loved grandma,s perogies, but he loved them even better when he thought he was stealing them! So whenever he was around grandma would make extra and put them outside on a table in a pot with the lid still on, then everyone would gather around the window to watch tchulla knock the lid off and gobble up the perogies, then he,d hop around and be all happy thinking he,d gotten away with something sneaky!
But he and my aunt katie had this love/hate relationship because he,d sit up in a tree and she would mimic and taunt him with a sound that used to tick him off! My aunt would tie pillows to her back and the neighbors would pay her money to mimic tchulla, then he,d swoop down on her and she would have to run and dive into a big hay stack and he,d grab the pillows with his talons and beat his wings on the hay stack, the pillows would end up in shreds but my aunt would be ok! And when tchulla thought he,d punnished my aunt enough he,d return to his tree! Just about everyone in their village loved tchulla! But jelousy is evil! There were a few boys that got hold of tchulla one day and tied three big rocks around his legs and threw him in a small but deep enough creek wher he drowned! When the towns people found tchulla and brought him home my grandpa was inconsolable! They held a funeral that was fit for the most important member of the town and everyone showed up! Except those who murdered tchulla, they and their families were advised to move because no one would guarantee their safety!

Wow that is a great story, swtp. You ever think about writing it down for a childrens book. Maybe leave out how he died, that was really sad. While I was reading it I could picture the eagle stealing the perogies. lol

I'm sorry swtp about tchulla. Sounds like an interesting character. Those evil boys will get their due paybacks three-fold.

Continue with the comments and oh yes, the band ROCKS too thumbsup.gif xo, Jody

Here in the remote Utah desert, eagles pass through about October and February. In October they leave Alaska and Canada to winter in Mexico. In February and March, they head north again. We get both Bald and Golden eagles here.
They are majestic, interesting birds. I've had friends from large cities in the midwest visit me, and they were simply entranced by seeing an eagle sitting on a telephone pole 50 feet away. I just hand them a pair of binoculars and let them study as long as they wish; it's a memory they will never forget.
At my cabin on a remote lake in south central British Columbia, bald eagles are commonplace in the summer. In fact, if you catch a fish, you sometimes have to haul in the fish quickly, or let a bunch of fishing line out, so a nearby eagle is thwarted in its plan to swoop down and catch the fish thrashing on the surface.
I've never entangled an eagle this way but knew a man who did so in the early 70s. He had quite a task, cutting the eagle free of his fishing line. Since he was close to shore, he nosed the boat into shore and dragged the eagle, fish and tangled line onto the beach. Somehow he got the eagle free and recovered his fish. The eagle was worn out but recovered quickly and flew away.
It's a hazard all anglers should note when they fish where eagles, ospreys, pelicans and seagulls are present.
On a lucky day at the cabin, I can sit on my porch and watch eagles in the trees across the bay. A good gin & tonic and a pair of binoculars or spotting scope round out the experience.
We also have very small owls here in the desert --- Burrow Owls --- that live in the unoccupied burrows of rodents. They're fun to watch and the cutest lil' devils ... lol
I enjoy birdwatching but I'm not maudlin about it. I still like to hunt grouse and chukar with a shotgun, for a wonderful meal. Slow-baked chukar, in a white wine sauce, is wonderfullllllllllllll ...

Thanks, i,m glad you enjoyed it! But i don,t know if i,d be good at writing a book? Mabey if i told it to someone with wrighting talent? That might be something i have to think about!
I also love the way you discribed their mating flight, I,ve only seen that on t.v. but it sure was beautiful, like a ballet in the sky!

I've been to Squamish and seen tons of eagles... when I'm feeling extra cheap I like to stay in Squamish rather than Whistler/Blackcomb and just drive the 35 minutes to go skiing. grin2.gif

The Squamish area is GORGEOUS. If you like the outdoors and wildlife and hiking, you can't beat that part of BC, (that and the Hope area) it's breathtaking.

Some cool facts:

For the Lakota, the eagle represents power, healing, wisdom, a state of grace, and a connection with the Great Spirit. Nearly two centuries later, President John F. Kennedy noted its "fierce beauty and proud independence" as symbols of the "strength and freedom of America." For Americans today, it symbolizes "freedom, strength, and courage.. the best of what America has to offer." The bald eagle was chosen because it is the only eagle native exclusively to North America: it is found "from Alaska to the northern border of Mexico and from Pacific to Atlantic coast."
Origins as a symbol of the United States

A lot of the old X-files episodes (and the 4400 Sci Fi show) were filmed near Squamish... the movie Rambo with Sylvester Stalone was filmed in Hope. original.gif

My ex-husband sent me a photograph last week of me with my blue and gold macaw when we were living on Whidbey Island.

I wish the background was more in focus because you'd have been able to see the eagle, ospry, and heron nests dotting the treeline along the bay. They were even more visible in winter when the trees were bare. The Ospry nests were HUGE, even bigger than the eagles. I think you could have fit 4 adult people into one of the Ospry nests! And yes, I was VERY VERY nervous about having my dear sweet Pelee out there in the open when that picture was being taken. That was a fairly dangerous situation where he could have been attacked by any number of the raptors in the area, they would not have hesitated, even with me holding him.

No snide comments about my ugly mug. haha. This picture is 15 years old. haha. tongue.gif

I don't think the eagle is my Totem but i'd like to think so...just wishful thinking i guess.
I was told a couple of times by two Native Americans that i met on line that the Bear may be my Totem...Cool. i can live with that! lol!
I've got eagle pics & mounted statues in actual sizes that look awesomely real of the Bald & Wedge Tail Eagle in and around my house.

Heres some awesome pics of the Australian Wedge Tail Eagle (Aquila audax)...

Australia's largest bird of prey, the Wedge Tailed Eagle, has a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres.
It is fairly common throughout Australia and feeds mostly on carrion but will kill rabbits, wallabies, kangaroos and reptiles.
It takes about 5 years for a WT to reach maturity.
Basic info on the Aussie Wedge Tail

Aussie Wedge Tail 1

To give you an idea of the WT Eagle's size, an adult kangaroo standing up right has the height of up to 7 feet...
Aussie Wedge Tail 2

Why its called the ''Wedge Tail'' Eagle...

Can you spot all 10 eagles?... yes.gif / no.gif

I've got eagle pics & mounted statues in actual sizes that look awesomely real of the Bald & Wedge Tail Eagle in and around my house.

Who am I to say what your totem (or one of them) is......BUT I think that if you have all this
eagle stuff around you...and you feel connected to the eagle....then the eagle is your totem.

What-ever anybody has said about bears (although bears are perfectly fine totems).....eagle spirit
is all around you in your house....and from what you have said....in your heart.....so...it's not
wishful thinking.....eagle is your totem! yes.gif

I've also got a few posters of sexy & beautiful models in my garage & workshop but unfortunately theres no real connection to them yet... whistling2.gif

I live in South Jersey, and where piegons, and seagulls are common, eagles are not...When my kids were little, we were outside and being little they would always being looking up at the sky, seeing figures in the clouds, or at night counting the stars..We also live between two military bases so it wasn't uncommon to see the smaller planes flying above. The day I was referring to, my youngest was looking up and started screaming that he saw one of these small planes. We looked, there was no sound. Within minutes we saw the most majestic bird flying above us. It was just gliding with a wing span that I thought would never end. It was so beautiful and of course I didn't have a camera ready. My kids and I were both in awe, and sure enough in the paper the next day, they mentioned an eagle in the area. We were a few of the lucky ones who happened to be in the right place at the right time. original.gif

An article i just read states the Bald Eagle has a life span of up to 20-30 years, but have been known to have a life spans of approximately 50 years also!

There are approx 70,000 Bald Eagles left on earth. The U.S. state with the largest resident population is Alaska.

Awesome pics...

Jody...great thread!! thumbsup.gif

Not to long ago, my sister and I went out to lunch together, and across from the restaurant we were eating at was a University with a very large park like entrance. We were sitting by a plate-glass window, and I notice a rather large bird perched in the tree top across the street at the University. I just kept starring at it in amazement, because even though it was about 150 yards away...it still looked huge. Then suddenly the bird swooped down and amazingly landed right in front of our window...looking straight in at me and my sister...as if to make eye-contact. I swear my heart must have leaped from my chest, cuz it was the weirdest feeling that came over me, almost like he was in tune...as if to noticed that I was in awe of his magnificence. Before I knew it...almost everyone in the restaurant came to our table also in awe & amazement. There he sat perched on a lamp post just 10 feet away from us...a bald eagle in all his splendor. The breeze was blowing through his feathers, and he looked so majestic. A memory forever imprinted in my mind. original.gif

*RUNS AWAY*

I mentioned several posts back that I had a Golden Eagle that used to kick back on the utility pole in front of my living room windows... NOW you can see why he scared the heck out of me. They are HUGE and powerful.

They and some barn owls can take down game that size, and do-so with incredible precision.

I was so sure that Golden was looking through my windows hungrily at my colorful blue and gold macaw (who was no slouch either with a beak that could exert 200lbs of pressure per square inch.... he was capable of taking your finger off if he chose to--he'd have been no match for that Golden though).

I really almost did call the utility company to see if they could come out and move the pole. I would keep the windows closed and I'd pace around in the house talking to him... "dude, you really need to stay on the pole, you can't come inside, Pelee would not taste good, if you come in I won't be able to get you back outside" I'd just wander around mumbling hoping and praying he wouldn't come crashing through the window. hahaha.

And for those that aren't familier with Squamish and the Hope area's of BC....

A lot of the old X-files episodes (and the 4400 Sci Fi show) were filmed near Squamish... the movie Rambo with Sylvester Stalone was filmed in Hope. original.gif

I love going into BC it's so beautiful and the people there are always very friendly original.gif
