I know this sounds a tad like the rabbit in 'Bambie' and I'm not sure if they are connected, but I was wondering if you folks would be able to clear something up with me.

My uncle is Finish and came to Canada when he was a teenager. We used to cottage up in Canada in a small Finish-rich cottage area in Udora. At nighttime while sitting around the fire we kids would wander near the forest line to catch fireflies. He would always tell us to watch out for Thumper, a giant maltempered rabbit that one could identify if they heard him thumping his foot down on the ground repeatedly.

He would tell this story over and over and over and over again, up until the last time we went to our cottage (I must have been around 14 years old).

Now, was my uncle just creating weird stories to freak us kids out, or is there any kind of myth or legend or cryptid from another culture that has anything to do with this 'evil rabbit'?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know, I don't seem to believe your uncle's story (although if I was 20 years younger, I probably would). However, know JRR Tolkien? Same like your uncle, he tells his children and his grandchildren story about a fictional world, a middle earth over and over again, until finally he decided to write them all down and there was The Lord Of The Rings, Hobbit, and Silmarillion.

Is this possibly a King of the Hill reference?

But back to the topic, I think your uncle was just messing with your head, adults seem to like doing that for some reason.

I don't know if there are any myths or legends attached to it, but it's a great story for keeping young children from wandering off into the woods.

I don't think there would be very much truth to these stories.

Sounds like a story to keep you wandering off into the woods. My grandmother owned a farm several hours away, in the middle of dark woods. My sister and I were told a scary tale about how years before she'd let her sheep out to graze in the wooded area to the right of her house, but one by one they started disappearing and all she'd find was blood and wool. She said there was something dangerous out there, eating her sheep, and it would get us if we went there, so obviously my sister and I never did. Naturally she laughs about it with us now - there was nothing out there, she just didn't want us lost.

Yeah, believe it or not, Mokele Mbembe was actually intended as a folklore to keep their children wandering into swamps, until the westerners came and hear the story, brought it back with some seasoning and voila! You got the surviving sauropod story in Congo.

Sure was.

When I was little, we had a summer home in the mountains, surrounded by woods..As kids we would want to go into the woods and dream up our adventures. Our parents told us there were little people who hid behind the trees and would jump out and chase us. So that was the end of our forest adventures. I think your uncle was just a good story teller. The only "Thumper" I too ever heard of was in the story "Bambi".

Haha he most likely was messing with me. I was just wondering if maybe he wasn't pulling this story out of his ass and there was actually a story somewhere he was getting this from.

Bwahahaha! Snipes live in EVERY school aged kids summer camp right? I know they do. I hunted them at camp every summer for years! You hunt them with rocks and take a pillow case to bring your trophy back in.

That and well... Spam animals. You know the ones... they have square builds, they're nocternal, fleetfooted, and have an incredibly tough blue exoskeleton.

I keep waiting for Bambi to come into this legend.

Noooooooo! Another careless tale of idiotic proportion that will eventually end up as a 9 page topic of nothing, but careless gabbing. Although I don't really care, just my opinion.

its just an pherostoric animal again lived thousands of years ago. Rabbits back then were bigger and were proberlly omnivores since at that time was like ice age stuff. So it could eat berrys or eat wild deer.
