i was on my way out the door when i found a bug on my mat that made me jump back, i showed it to my parents who have lived here for ages and have never seen anything like this wasp like bug. the most unusual thing about this bug are the tenticle like strands that come out of its abdomin, when i first found the bug i thought it was a massive stinger. but it separated into 3 strands. it has the head of a wasp and pretty long legs, its mostly dark brown and a bright yellowish green color variant on certain parts, the most unique thing about this bug is the very long crescent shaped abdomin, witch is dark brown with a bright yellow zig zag pattern on it. i really wish i had a camera so i could post a picture, if you have any ideas on what this thing is, please let me know

Dont your parents have a camera? Cell phone camera? Can you at least try to draw it? Would help alot Im sure.

A drawing would be pretty cool if you don't have a camera. Even if you don't have a scanner, you can try it in Paint or something. I've never heard of a bug that looked like that though. Was it alive or dead when you found it? Did you keep it?

I have seen the the insect you are speaking of it is a nina a la tiera or (Jerusalem cricket) google it alot of info on it. In fact if you have it alive there is a scientist looking for live species to do further studies on them.

Ahoy,
Not being able to see it doesn’t help me, but it sounds like you could be describing a velvet ant. There are a number of varieties. Try googling velvet ant photos and see if that is it.

Ahoy again
The velvet ant isn’t an ant. It is a wasp without wings. If it is one, don’t let it sting you….it hurts like heck. The big red ones are also called “cow killers.” Gives you an idea of the sting.

I was thinking a sawfly of some sort. Still a hymenopteran like yer wasps, ants and bees. Although I can only see one pair of wings, which would suggest a dipteran, possibly a mozzie of some sort (dipterans have things called Halteres in place of their second pair of wings!). I'd hazzard a guess at some species of sawfly though.

BTW, these particular wasps do not have poison glands like other wasps. The long appendages at the base of their abdomen aren't really for stabbing at other creatures...they are used for depositing their eggs into dead wood! I live in a rather wooded are and often see these critters...no need to run off in a dither from these guys....basically harmless (unless you're a tree).

I saw the exact same bug when i was wildfire fighting. I was taking a break and leaned up on a tree. I heard this growling sound right behind me and first thing I thought was Wolf. I slowly turned and this wasp thing was on my shoulder. Huge and red and black. The growling sound was from it's wings. Man that freaked me out.

Probably the very tree she had laid her eggs in! Lucky for you these wasps aren't all that aggressive (or venomous).

Ichnuemon wasp. Nothing mutated about it.
You're welcome.
Joel.
EDIT:
Sorry didn't know it was already discussed. Thought it wasn't more than a page long. Anyways, Ichnuemon wasps don't sting as far as i'm aware. Those protrusions are called ovipositors and are used to stab grubs and worms through the bark of trees, where the eggs are then deposited, so that the larval wasps have a fresh host to feed on when they hatch. The insect world can be fairly gruesome.
