The world's first treatment centre for nail biters is to open in the Netherlands next month.

Director of the new centre in Venlo, of the Institute for Pathological Onychophagy (IPO) says he and his team have invented an aid to make nail-biting impossible.

He said initial trials had been almost 100 per cent successful and that people attending the centre could expect to be completely cured within four weeks.

"The treatment has been successful for 98 per cent of the first trial patients. Very few fall back into the habit," he said.

There are about 2 million people who bite their nails in the Netherlands, according to officials at the centre.

The centre fits a special device to the hands that allow normal activities but prevent nail biting, and at the same time gives patients extensive therapy and counselling to get them to stop.

Doesn't hurt that bad...

I'm one who does that on occasion. Though... only when I'm really nervous. Though it doesn't bug me having short nails. Makes it easier to type, though... my teeth hate me for it.

XD

Guess you can't win all the time

I used to do that - my pinky nails were seriously about 1 mm tall. Nasty habit.

I was able to quit without help of intervention wink2.gif

That's insane... just give em a pack of cigarettes and a couple of beers... laugh.gif

There is no amount of nail biting that an abundance of crack and a serious amounts of vodka cannot cure... oh wait. I guess that runs you into other problems.

I keep thinking about the movie "Half Baked" when he goes to a narcotics anonymous meeting to try and quit smoking marijuana.

Is it really so bad that you would have to create a clinic for it?

It looks disgusting both watching someone do it and the way the nails look after.

I trim them quite a bit, because my hobbies involve a lot of running around with gloves on holding things.

Heard about this on the radio yesterday. I do find it a little akward. But whatever.

NAIL-BITING TREATMENT CENTER!! That is the saddest thing. All it takes to quit is one or two times that you went too far and spilt a little blood.

not so... I bite mine. and over the years Ive drawn a lot of blood. and cursed myself for several days after the fact, when every finger on my left hand is ACHEY because I've bitten them so bad... and yet, I continue to bite them.

The only cure I've found is getting acrylic nails put on. Its not the same satisfaction nibbling on acrylic nails... although, I admit, my fingers still instinctively go to my mouth when I'm watching a movie even WITH falsies on.

Its beyond hope for me I'm afraid...

Jeez you make it sound like a drug addiction, it's just nail biting LOL If you really want to quit, dip your fingers in a toilet bowl, ok yeah that's too gross just dip them in something really bad tasting.

Or beat yourself everytime you bite your nails, like, um slap yourself and say I'm bad or something.
