Foot-and-mouth strain identified
BBC

The strain of foot-and-mouth disease found at a Surrey farm has been identified, Defra has said.

The strain detected in infected cattle is identical to that used at the Institute for Animal Health, at Pirbright, three miles from the farm.

Defra could not say the laboratory was the source but has increased the size of the protection and surveillance zones covering farms in the area.

An urgent assessment of biosecurity has begun at the institute.

I really really hope that they have detected it in time to prevent the disease from spreading any further. It’s the last thing that farmers in the UK need at the moment. Many have only just recovered from the 2001 outbreak. If the disease did leak from the Animal Health facility, I hope that whoever let it happen has their butt kicked. angry.gif
I keep livestock myself and also work on a farm in England. Luckily the disease didn’t spread this way during the first epidemic and I don’t know what I’d do if it ever did.
I know a farmer who had to have his stock culled the first time around. He’s decided that because of this scare, he’s going to leave farming. He just can’t take any more of the worry.
It just seems to be one thing after another. I suppose we’re just going to have to wait and see what happens. hmm.gif

Things like this have been fodder for movies, tv shows and conspiracy theorists. So, maybe the conspiracy theorists aren't that far off at all.
