Star Trek Breakdowns
How old will Kirk and the crew be in the new film?

Zachary Quinto as Spock?
US, August 5, 2007 - Now that Zachary Quinto has been officially announced as the new Spock, casting speculation has kicked into high gear about the rest of the cast of J.J. Abrams' upcoming Star Trek movie reboot.

Casting breakdowns for the film have appeared at Ain't It Cool News, which reveals the age range that actors should be in to play the leads. Whomever plays Captain James T. Kirk must be between 23-29 and in "great physical condition" (no Shat paunch?!). Actors should also be 6' tall or under.

Dr. McCoy will not be the middle-aged ship's physician immortalized by DeForrest Kelley but rather a "danger-loving" 28-32 year-old. Lt. Uhura is around 25 years-old and "tom-boyish" (was Nichelle Nichols tom-boyish?).

Lt. Sulu is described as "extremely fit" and a "wildcat" between the ages of 25-32; Japanese actors are preferred but the role is open to all Asian-American actors.

The only requirements to play U.S.S. Enterprise chief engineer Scotty is for the actor to be between 28-32 and to "be able to do a flawless Scottish accent!"

Notably, the characters of Chekov, Yeoman Rand and Nurse Chapel were not listed. Is it possible these characters are not in the film?

Star Trek begins filming this fall for a Christmas '08 release.

Trek's Chekov Cast
Alpha Dog actor set for Abrams' Trek.

US, August 8, 2007 - J.J. Abrams has picked Russian-born actor Anton Yelchin (Alpha Dog, Charlie Bartlett) to play Pavel Chekov in the new Star Trek movie, a prequel to the beloved sci-fi franchise that chronicles the early years of the USS Enterprise crew.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Yelchin is still in final negotiations to join the flick which is casting up at this moment in New York and London. Filming is expected to get underway on November 5 with a Christmas 2008 release planned.

Yelchin will join Heroes star Zachary Quinto and Leonard Nimoy, who will both play the role of Mr. Spock in the film.

Actors to portray Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Scotty, the film's villain and the Federation captain are still being sought. Abrams, THR says, is looking for big name actors to fill the latter two parts. Hmmm, could the federation captain be Christopher Pike (and could Tom Cruise be the star they're eyeing for it?) We think so!

In Trek lore, Pavel Chekov is the navigator and tactical officer aboard the Enterprise. He also stands-in for Mr. Spock at the science officer station when needed. In the film series, he was promoted to lieutenant and chief of security.

Yelchin is currently filming Finding t.A.T.u., opposite Mischa Barton, and is set to star in the Susan Sarandon dramedy Middle of Nowhere.
