My dog lived for 15 years, and was well loved. He was a very intelligent dog. In fact he was so intelligent that it surprised me on several occasions. He always slept with me, and was closer to me than anyone else in my family.

My dog died nearly a year ago, but his spirit still sleeps with me in bed. I can feel him walking on the bed towards me and lie next to me like he always did when he was alive. I know it is him, and I am happy when he comes to lie with me. I can sense that he is happy and his emotion makes me feel good as well. I don't know how, but I can tell that it is him. I get a almost overwhelming feeling of happiness when it happens.

He shows up maybe once or twice a month, and I have never told anyone in my family about it because they would probably think I was crazy..lol It started happening a couple days after he died and has been happening for nearly a year. I feel a few footsteps on the bed, and then a gentle thud as his weight hits the bed as he lies down. I then get this unexplainable feeling that tells me that it is him. A minute or two later the feeling fades and he is either no longer there or is not moving anymore. I can't see him or physically feel anything.

I am not even sad that he died because of it. I was upset at first until his spirit came into my bed. Now it is almost like he never died.

Anyone else had experiences with dead pet spirits? Bible huggers will claim that pets do not have a soul, but I know differently.

I wonder what the after life is like for animals.

Yes, absolutely, GirlInBlack -- I had a cat that died at age 24 two years ago, and she is an extremely persistent visitor in my dreams. In fact, when Isis shows up in my dreams, it's an extremely effective trigger of a lucid dream event for me -- it's uncanny how real she seems in my dreams -- as if it's really her.

I also had a dog for 16 years -- he died just a month ago -- he was such a beautiful friend and a wonderful spirit. I think when he died last month, it was the closest i have ever been a a nervous breakdown. I loved that dog so enormoulsy -- now he's in my dreams as well, and very vividly.

Pets are so wonderful, aren't they -- but so painfully hard to say good-bye to.

my dog is still alive after 7 years, but my old dog died a long time ago, i was in kindergarten, and came home and my mom was crying, i saw her one time, but when she was alive i never was super close to her

One of our cats died about a fortnight ago, I havent seen or heard anything that could be him but I know that one of the other cats can sense him around. Since he died she has acted really strangely quite often.... she will look at a spot and stare intensely then run like crazy into a different room....she has also screeched round the house running back and forth between wherever I am and the place he used to sleep (he was pretty ill and liked the same spot at the side of the settee) when she is behaving like this she is really strange as though she is hyper and scared. I know all cats can be hyper but this is something different....she never got on with him when he was alive as she always wanted to play but he was always too poorly and hissed at her all the time but he never ever hurt her so I can't understand why she seems so scared sad.gif I would love to see or even sense him there myself yes.gif

You might consider me a "Bible hugger," (I'm Christian, but not fundamentalist), but I do think our pets join us in heaven.

I had a collie when I was young, Heidi, who was the sweetest dog that ever lived. (She had an extreme fear of thunderstorms, and she chased cars--until one hit her and did some damage to her jaw).

We had to put her away because of severe arthritis, which still upsets me. I often dream of her, and I feel that her spirit is present during those times.

I was meditating once, trying to contact my spirit guide, and Heidi appeared. She took me to my guide. I think she looks out for me.

I also lost a cocker spaniel, Wendy, and a cat, Harry. I miss them like I would miss a family member. I'm sure there is a place for them in Heaven. They are a part of God's creation, just like us--and they have God's life force in them, which never dies.
Uh-Oh
One of our dogs, Baby, was really close to my dad and me. She died a couple years ago, but we think that she's still around. My dad describes almost the same thing as you when you can feel the dog crawl up into your bed. She'd always crawl up and try to steal his pillow and he feels that. When he looks around to see if it was one of the other dogs, they'll be sleeping on the floor or in a chair. I used to have dreams about her all the time up until about a year ago. Every once in a while, I can hear her walking through the hallway. (We have this plastic protective covering so the dogs don't track mud on the carpet when they walk in the back door and it's very easy to hear the dogs on it, or anyone else for that matter.) She used to always play in my covers. She'd get underneath of them and roll around. She always let out this snort/bark when she was playing and I hear that when I'm alone in the room every once in a while. She had this 'baby' bark that wasn't deep like the other dogs we have, so it's very easy to tell her apart from them. It's nice to know that she still checks up on us every once in a while.

I think I saw her one day. I was home alone, listening to music, and in no way scared or thinking about ghosts or anything like that. I'd let both of my other dogs outside in the yard a couple minutes ago and was sitting in the living room watching a music video that caught my eye. That was when I noticed something sitting next to the chair that was beside the hallway door. When I turned to look, I saw Baby sitting there, but she didn't stay for long. The image faded pretty fast, but I did see it while I was looking straight. It wasn't an 'out of the corner of my eye' thing. It freaked me out and I thought maybe it was a warning or something so I called my parents to see where they were and if they were okay. They ended up making it home alright and nothing really bad happened, so I guess she was just dropping in to say hello.

What a nice story...I've had dogs that have passed away and I believe that they are as loyal to us now as they were when they were alive..I'm sure your dog was just checking in to make sure everything was o.k...Animals are the best... original.gif

Do any of you remember the classic kid's story, The Velveteen Rabbit?

I wonder if pets are like this--if by loving them, they become "real." Maybe when a wild animals dies, their life force goes back to God, but when we love an animal, it makes them "real"--gives them a soul (I think they already have a spirit).

Oh, well--I'm just hypothesizing. rolleyes.gif

I fully understand your attachment to your dog. My wife and I have a dog and 2 cats. We will be devistated when their time is up (hopefully not for many many years).

However, I don't think animals form ghosts. That's not to say you aren't experiencing anything. Rather I think you're probably experiencing a residual haunting but not based on your pet's spirit but rather on your own memories of your dog.

OMG Speaking of pets, it is nearly midnight here, and I have 6 Cockatiels that began fluttering about and screeching. (in living room) I thought perhaps one fell of the perch which causes "night fright."I went in and they were staring at something. I looked over above my sofa and even in my photos there is a ceramic cup with beads on it, hanging from the lower ceiling and I saved that cause my ex b/f bought me that in Key West, FL. That thing was moving back and forth so hard, I was in awe. I walked over to it, and tried to stop it, but even with my hand on it, it continued to move with an amazing force. I then used two hands to keep it still but it wouldnt stop. It is still moving now. Its a chilly night and no fans on or window open, so there is no reason for that thing to move. Just when I think things quiet down they dont. I just turned the light on, and demanded it STOP, and it did. Birds are still awake and vigilant, but at least it stopped. Just had to share the moment.. passifier.gif

So, do you think that after paranormal experts and demonologists and an exorcism and follow up visits, you still have something in your house? That doesn't speak too highly of the people who are taking care of your problem. Where in the US are you that tonight is a chilly night?
I mean no disrespect whatsoever, and I'm not trying to insult you, I'm just curious as to how much has to be done to rid you of your problem? Obviously, demonologists and paranormal experts and exorcists haven't done their job, if the job was to get rid of whatever is in your house and you are still experiencing paranormal activity.
What will you do now?

My mom and i have argued about this on occasion, we are both Christians but she doesn,t believe animals have a soul so they can,t go to heaven! I on the other hand believe that God loves all his creations, and they do in my oppinion have a spirit if not a soul exactly like ours! And i believe that spiritual energy doesn,t just die when their bodies do any more than our spiritual energy dies when our physical bodies do! And i just feel that our beloved pets will be there waiting for us! At least i hope so! I just can,t imagine living in a place called heaven without animals and nature! After all the bible mentions the lion laying down in peace with the lamb, why would God mention that if there will be no animals?

He totally fumigated the place inch by inch, and I dont get any feeling of that heavy dark presence any longer at all, no foul odors or that VOICE. I was told to keep a daily journal of what has occured since, and so far its much better. I do have human spirits here as well, but this was freaky, and if it was Demonic it would not have stopped when I told it to, it would have gotten worse. I have always had paranormal activity here and was assured the human spirits would not be harmed in any way. It is rare that my birdies see anything or freak out, even when IT was here they sort of seemed to not care, but this was different. I dunno Cyqe, its in another room, and I walked in and thought OMG!! My son is on the sofa directly under it, and as I said, we were told NOT to come back for at least two days, but he felt he could sleep here, which was the wrong thing to do. He has experienced things and the Demonologist said he will be okay and anything around him will be temporary. I was just amazed at the force it had..wow..This is a photo of the item a month ago..

I had a friend in high school that swore that her deceased dog came back to lick her hand in the middle of the night, like he did in life. I think many intelligent animals continue on after death, just like we do. I've never really questioned that, but it made me curious as to what other animals continue on... do cockroaches? Do misquitoes? Do lizards? My lizard is pretty dumb... not much going on in there besides the basic survival needs, or so it appears to me.
Uh-Oh
Maybe they only come back if they have something to come back to? For example, a loved pet might come back to it's family because there's a bond there. An animal that lives in the wild probably wouldn't come back to take a stroll through a stranger's house. That raises another question though, I wonder if animals that live in packs come back once they're dead. o.O Even if they did come back to see their fellow pack members, it doesn't seem likely that many humans will see them. There's so many possibilities that are interesting to think about.

Oh nice post!! I liked this one. Yes, I think animals can return but it depends on the bond. The OP obviously has extremely strong ties to her doggy. Who's to say the dogs not dropping in for a little visit? IDK. It's cool to think about.

AWWWWWWWWWWWWW I am such an animal lover anyway. Years ago when I was pregnant with my youngest my Calico, became ill, and was diagnosed with Leukemia. The vet gave her lots of medication to make her comfortable but eventually I had to have her put to sleep. For over a year or more, at night I could feel her sleeping at my feet where she always did. My bed squeaked and as I would lay still it would squeak and could definately feel what I call pressure on the bed.. I loved that kitty... crying.gif

All life has a soul and a spirit.

And yes they come back.I'm thinking of last year when mom put her 19 year old pek down,Maggie was a great little dog and is well missed by me and mom my older daughter was sad that Maggie was gone.Every now and then I'll see a peach colored fuzz ball curled up next to my older daughter.

Over the years I have seen and lost many pets. But some hurt more then others.

This happened in 1999 and was my much loved rescued mini collie.I hand fed her for six months brought her back form the brink. We had 7 long years. Before cancer took her body over.I could stand the thought of making her go through cancer treatment. So I gave her the summer.

Aguest of that same year I carried her into the vets office. For the last time.We always make sure that they sleep through that fatal shot of meds. She hated car ride's but this time it was peaceful.Once there we gave a sleeping med and she stayed in my lap till our vet came in.The final shot went smoothly and she sliped away in peace.

I had my eyes closed and was hugging her . I saw a rainbow road and her running up then back to where i was whining wanting me to fallow. For weeks i could feel her up againest my leg as i walked around. And still do at times.

Our dearest friends do go to heaven and if they don't then send me to walk with them.Heaven won't be heaven with out them.

Thanks. It seems to make sense, really. I don't think I've ever heard of someone seeing a ghost animal in the wild, (although I'm sure there's probably a sighting somewhere) but a lot of times someone will talk about their pet coming back. I really do believe that they watch over us and I agree that GirlInBlack must have had a strong bond with her dog.

I had a yorkie named ET for 14 years when I had to put him to sleep. I was so devasted that I couldn't go with my husband to see it happening. This has been about 4 years ago, but as of today, I have a deep regret for not having being there for him in his final hour. I just couldn't do it because I knew I wasn't going to be able to handle it. So I stayed home crying for almost three days. I still cry for him once in a while because I feel guilty for not being strong enough to be there for him. Sometime I wish that I could find a way to let him know how sorry I am and how much I miss him.

But about two nights ago, something similar to your story happened to me. I just went to bed for the night and was laying on my back feeling sad. All of a sudden I felt something small crawling by my leg moving the blankets as if trying to find a confortable spot to lay down. Next, I felt a weight-like feeling laying by my leg and then it stopped. For some unknown reason I felt that it was the spirit of my yorkie ET coming to lay down by me. I felt so much happier knowing that he was close to me. One night I woke up suddenly because I heard like a dog crying sound as if a dog was crying to come to me. I thought of ET again and felt that he was trying to let me know that he wanted to come back to me. I feel silly by saying this but I started whispering calming words into the night in case he could hear me.

About two years ago, the spirit of my yorkie ET let me know that something was about to happened to my new yorkie Tito (he is 2 years old now and spoiled rotten as well). I was in my garage unpacking boxes when suddenly out of the corner of my eye I saw a small black shadow running toward the backyard thru the side garage door. Of course this door was closed so I knew I saw something strange running around. Right after I saw this shadow a dreadful feeling hit me and the first thing that came to my mind was to look for my current yorkie Tito. I called Tito but he didn't show up. I went outside to the back street of my house and saw someone about to grab my yorkie Tito. I yelled at them to let them know that it was dog and not to touch him. As of this day, I feel that the spirit of my former yorkie, ET, came to me to warned me about Tito. It would have teared me up losing another yorkie so soon. I do believe that dogs do have spirits/souls and they are always close to us until the day comes when we will see them again.

I think if your pup would want to remember anything it would be the 14 great years you had together, maybe he was trying to comfort you and help you to remember that. Sometimes I regret going with my dogs to see them down. It's a fleeting moment, I guess I'm just trying to say that it's probably more important to you than your dog, please don't let it worry you. He loves ya all the same!

Awesome tat, goalienan! If only I wasn't afraid of needles... crying.gif

As far as lizards go, I plugged them, so I best give the whole story. I really don't recommend them until a lot of research and thought has gone into the decision. Ours came from a neighbor boy who wasn't willing to continue taking care of her. Another neighbor suggested us knowing our hedgehog had just passed (the hedgehog was acquired similarly). They need new uvb bulbs every 6 months to 1 year, depending on how much you want to spend - the lights aren't cheap and they need good lights to digest food properly. They need veggies cut up a couple times a week, fattened up crickets, poo cleaned from the cage, baths, the substrate needs changed, nails cut, very regular maintenance - for years. Often the novelty wears off and people are left with a responsibility they aren't interested in maintaining. I'm not implying anyone here isn't responsible, but I didn't feel comfortable leaving that lizard plug there without listing some of the cons... especially remembering how thin and sickly our beardy was when we got her. sad.gif Sorry for going OT.

Aaaawww, soonerlady, your post made me cry.
It is my opinion that when a person or pet dies, they can see into your heart and they know what you thought of them and how much you loved them, no matter what your actions were while they were alive.
Like Episteme, I have regretted seeing pets put down, because that is my last memory of them.

And thank you Eppie for the lizard care speech, you just saved me from an iguana that my son had eyes on. I let him read that post and told him he would be responsible for all of that and he decided that the responsibilities of the dog he got a few months ago was enough. notworthy.gif

goalienan, very cool tat!

I lost my goldfish today. crying.gif
Before you laugh, I've had them for 10 years.
My son won them at the county fair when he was 4 and we've been buying bigger fishtanks for them ever since. They were as big as my hand, not including fins and tails and we were discussing buying a 100 gallon tank, (they were in a 50 gallon) this past weekend. I noticed this morning that Jay didn't look so good. He was just kind of hanging in the tank. These guys had been through a lot, (chlorinated water added to the tank by the hubby who's a little dumb, my niece putting a piece of pizza in the tank, one of the kids friends pouring his soda in the tank) these were some tough fish. I checked the water and everything seemed fine.
So, when I came home for lunch Jay was dead.
Silent Bob however, seemed to be doing well. Swimming around, he ate the food I put in for him. I checked the water again, everything seemed fine. Then when I came home from work Silent Bob was dead too.
We had a fish funeral this afternoon and I'm kinda depressed about it. It's not like I could pet them or anything but they were cool and I liked watching them swim and when I would get near the tank they would do the food dance because they knew I was the food person in the house. I'll miss that.
Sorry for being off topic.

Roxas I'm sorry about your dog if it's sick, it's a hard thing to go through. sad.gif

That's a good way of putting it, Cyqe, about having that be your last memory of them. And I think you're right about them knowing how we feel. I wish I could be so eloquent.

And Cyqe it's too bad about your fishies, I love the names!! Ten years is a LONG TIME to have goldfish! Wow! I'm glad your son made up his mind about the lizard, if he ever decided to get one, bearded dragons do have wonderful personalities. Well, most do. Ours doesn't mind all the people we have coming in and out giving her attention, petting and holding her.

Talking about fish reminds me of some of the smarter fishies we've had. A Tiger Oscar that despised my niece and nephew, they would put their faces to the tank and he'd try to bite at them. We'd have other people put their faces up and he'd check them out and ignore them, it was just those two people. I'd rearrange his tank and he'd put it right back the way he liked it, always the same though it took him a few days. He'd knock a ball out of the tank for a treat. A large pleco that made a couple of escapes before we figured out how to keep him blocked in with a big rock over the lid. We found him twice in the morning, in a panic that he wasn't in the tank. Smart? Very. After a short time of searching, both times he was about three or four feet away in the dog water bowl, somehow still alive in the chlorine! (Don't worry, he lived for years after his carpet safaris) grin2.gif

Sooooo... I still can't decide if something like a fish could "haunt"! Or go to heaven, or reincarnate, or whatever it is we believe people might do when they die. Anyone have an opinion on this? I don't have much of one, it's almost like we form a different sort of attachment to them and the question becomes irrelevant. unsure.gif But I'm still curious!

They say animals don't have souls because they are meant for food...aren't human beings eaten also by some animal or another?

Yay! Another Beardy owner, great job rescuing yours! thumbsup.gif
This is my little monkey:-

It's such a shame that so many people buy pets without doing their research first. Over here in England the RSPCA are trying to ban reptile keeping because of this. It’s the typical situation that those idiots, who cut corners, are spoiling it for everyone else not to mention causing unnecessary suffering to who knows how many animals.

Bartimej:- As lizards go Bearded Dragons are quite expensive and higher maintenance than a lot of other species. If you’re serious about getting a lizard and after research find that a Beardy would be too much for you. You could try looking into Leopard or Crested Geckos, still great lizards but they are slightly easier to keep and not quite as expensive.

Sorry, back to the original topic. I too really hope that whatever happens to people when they die, that animals go to the same place. (Hopefully somewhere nice, lol)
Maybe if animals can come back as spirits, we don’t see wild animal spirits because they are much more timid and don’t attach themselves to a certain person. Or maybe have keen senses as to where people are and choose more secluded locations. If there are spirits, perhaps they can control who sees them; a family pet may choose for a person to see them whereas a wild animal may not.

My much loved cat died about three years ago at the age of 13 from what the vets diagnosed as probable anti-freeze poisoning. There have been numerous occasions where I have thought that I have seen her around the house. Also quite often another member of my family has asked me if I know where our other cat (still alive) is because they thought she might be shut in a room somewhere in the house because they heard her crying. I then search the house and the garden, only to find our cat outside, usually asleep in the sun or on her favourite spot on the bench in the greenhouse.

Lol, the thought of fish haunting made me laugh. Would they only haunt fish tanks or bodies of water, or would they haunt everywhere?

I believe if the animal has been loved and loves someone in our current world it may come back as a ghost. Or if it has a purpose to come back just like human ghosts original.gif
