Full Version: I'm a non-skeptic atheist

So, how come that the world seems to be split in materialistic skeptics and believers (in any kind of religion, not just Christians)?

Last time I checked atheist meant not believing in God (any god or godess, not just the Christian one) NOT not believing in anything spiritual. Or even worse not believing in anything at all. That's nihilism, not atheism. mad.gif

I believe in lots of things, most of them never proven right or wrong by science, but that make logical sense to me and that I FEEL (this is the key word for me!) are true. It doesn't mean I'm a fake atheist, or that I'm unsure in my beliefs. I'm also wary of using the word spiritual because I do believe that everything is either matter or energy and that no real "supernatural" things exist. But I do believe in most of the so-called supernatural phenomena. I just think they're perfectly natural. Rare, maybe, but natural. If they weren't that would mean there is something outside of the natural world and that would clash with my beliefs. So I'm usually misunderstood both by believers and fellow atheists. Am I the only one or there are others like me on this forum?

I've been told more than once by believers that being an atheist I didn't believe in ANYTHING!

Not believing in anything would qualify as nihilism, maybe. Surely not atheism.

I dunno Dora... the last few days around here everyone has been trying to define and lable everyone/thing else. No one agrees on anything. If I were you, I wouldn't worry about it too much. thumbsup.gif

Dear, sweet Becky's Mom. I think that she saying "if you believe in NOTHING, that isn't atheism, that is nihilism. Meaning that a nihlist does not believe in religion, government, relationships, anything and everything. NOT just religion.

Agnostics?

Considering that Atheism is simply lack of belief in God(s), it isn't necessary for one to lack belief in any single thing other than God(s) in order to be an Atheist. yes.gif

Despte the definefest of late I think that everyone is or could be an atheist of something. I'm not a believer in the bible, or the biblical god, so to a christian that makes me by their definition an atheist. I'm not really an atheist I am a pagan. To a muslim someone who does not believe in allah is an atheist I would think because they don't believe in their god. I don't think that because you lack a belief in one god you are automatically an atheist in the truest sense but there will always be people who will label you as such for not believing in THEIR god. No biggie, believe what you want as long as you don't push it on others.

Buddhists (at least the ones I've met) can be described as "Spiritual Atheists." I think, anyway.
