Full Version: Pagan Morality

Pagan morality is very different form the Abrahamic morality. Morality for Pagan can be as simple as the Wiccan law of "First do no harm, do as you will" (While being simple and straight forward, it is actually more complicated than one would think.) to the ADF"s (A Druid Fellowship) Nine Virtues:

QUOTE
Wisdom: Good judgment, the ability to perceive people and situations correctly, deliberate about and decide on the correct response
Piety: Correct observance of ritual and social traditions; the maintenance of the agreements, (both personal and societal), we humans have with the Gods and Spirits. Keeping the Old Ways, through ceremony and duty
Vision: The ability to broaden one's perspective to have a greater understanding of our place/role in the cosmos, relating to the past, present and future
Courage: The ability to act appropriately in the face of danger
Integrity: Honor; being trustworthy to oneself and to others, involving oath-keeping, honesty, fairness, respect, self-confidence...
Perseverance: Drive; the motivation to pursue goals even when that pursuit becomes difficult
Hospitality: Acting as both a gracious host and an appreciative guest, involving benevolence, friendliness, humor, and the honoring of "a gift for a gift"
Moderation: Cultivating one's appetites so that one is neither a slave to them nor driven to ill health, (mental or physical), through excess or deficiency
Fertility: Bounty of mind, body and spirit, involving creativity, production of objects, food, works of art, etc., an appreciation of the physical, sensual, nurturing...

There are not a lot of focus on your sexual preferences or marriage. Those are things you organize in your own personal life and is up to the couple or group involved. As long as no one comes to harm. Rape and Pedophile behavior cause harm and are not tolerated in modern Pagan communities.

There is also Strong ethic of caring for the Earth, our Mother. You don't spit on your Mother. mad.gif

There is also a strong ethic in learning. Not just about the religion or path you follow but the natural world.
There are other ethics, but I got to hit the pool for my PT. I think Pagan morality works for a modern world to maintain a free and fair society.

Nice Darkwind. It's nice to see this tread hopefully it will dispel a lot of misconceptions.

Interesting, but not surprising to me...

These precepts are pretty much identical to that of the Friends. The one exception might be Fertility, we think that is covered under all the other precepts.

We also take "moderation" a step further and call it Simplicity.

1. Integrity
2. Equality
3. Simplicity
4. Non-violence
5. Respect (which would be analogous to your Hospitality I think)

Interesting.

I would saythat your concept is right on, even for those that do not prescribe to Rede (wiccan). It does have a lot to do with common sense and working to live, if not in harmony with others at least to allow them the space to do what they choose (as long as it does not hurt others around them). For my part I have never been a huge fan of the Rede, only because you find so many people (IMO) that do not even know that there are several stanzas to the thing and some would dwell only on that one line (do what you will but harm none).
My favorite part of a good number of the Pagan/Neopagan philosophy’s is not designating “ownership” and mastery over all the animals and plants as in other larger overly organized religions (which shall go nameless, so guess). I would prefer a more cooperative way of thinking in the connotation of the planet.
Will be interesting to see if you get any takers on this thread, for discussion purposes.
Nice post.

Thank you, Kane. Here is the full Rede.

Bide within the Law you must, in perfect Love and perfect Trust.
Live you must and let to live, fairly take and fairly give.

For tread the Circle thrice about to keep unwelcome spirits out.
To bind the spell well every time, let the spell be said in rhyme.

Light of eye and soft of touch, speak you little, listen much.
Honor the Old Ones in deed and name,
let love and light be our guides again.

Deosil go by the waxing moon, chanting out the joyful tune.
Widdershins go when the moon doth wane,
and the werewolf howls by the dread wolfsbane.

When the Lady's moon is new, kiss the hand to Her times two.
When the moon rides at Her peak then your heart's desire seek.

Heed the North winds mighty gale, lock the door and trim the sail.
When the Wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast.

When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss you on the mouth.
When the wind whispers from the West, all hearts will find peace and rest.

Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them fast and burn them slow.
Birch in the fire goes to represent what the Lady knows.

Oak in the forest towers with might, in the fire it brings the God's
insight. Rowan is a tree of power causing life and magick to flower.

Willows at the waterside stand ready to help us to the Summerland.
Hawthorn is burned to purify and to draw faerie to your eye.

Hazel-the tree of wisdom and learning adds its strength to the bright fire burning.
White are the flowers of Apple tree that brings us fruits of fertility.

Grapes grow upon the vine giving us both joy and wine.
Fir does mark the evergreen to represent immortality seen.

Elder is the Lady's tree burn it not or cursed you'll be.
Four times the Major Sabbats mark in the light and in the dark.

As the old year starts to wane the new begins, it's now Samhain.
When the time for Imbolc shows watch for flowers through the snows.

When the wheel begins to turn soon the Beltane fires will burn.
As the wheel turns to Lamas night power is brought to magick rite.

Four times the Minor Sabbats fall use the Sun to mark them all.
When the wheel has turned to Yule light the log the Horned One rules.

In the spring, when night equals day time for Ostara to come our way.
When the Sun has reached it's height time for Oak and Holly to fight.

Harvesting comes to one and all when the Autumn Equinox does fall.
Heed the flower, bush, and tree by the Lady blessed you'll be.

Where the rippling waters go cast a stone, the truth you'll know.
When you have and hold a need, harken not to others greed.

With a fool no season spend or be counted as his friend.
Merry Meet and Merry Part bright the cheeks and warm the heart.

Mind the Three-fold Laws you should three times bad and three times good.
When misfortune is enow wear the star upon your brow.

Be true in love this you must do unless your love is false to you.

These Eight words the Rede fulfill:

"An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye Will"

Here is the virtues of the Asatru Folk Assembly a Norse religion.

QUOTE
NineVirtues of Asatru
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STRENGTH IS BETTER THAN WEAKNESS...
Let others wallow in their vulnerability! We are not ashamed to be strong. The cult of the anti-hero will find no support in us, and the Gods we follow are not for the weak.

COURAGE IS BETTER THAN COWARDICE...
By facing life's struggles with courage, we constantly extend our capabilities. Without courage, nothing else can be done!

JOY IS BETTER THAN GUILT...
Let us take pleasure in our humanity, rather than being ashamed of who we are. Misplaced guilt - because of our sexuality, or our strength, or our greatness - has enslaved us long enough!

HONOR IS BETTER THAN DISHONOR...
We must be true to what we are and what we believe, and we must always act with nobility rather than baseness. Our personal standards must be banners held high in our hearts!

FREEDOM IS BETTER THAN SLAVERY...
We have no master! Those who would enslave us, whatever their excuse, are our enemies. The totalitarian ant nest is repugnant to those who demand the free, bracing wind of the Northlands!

KINSHIP IS BETTER THAN ALIENATION...
The isolation and loneliness of modern life is foreign to us, nor it is a necessary evil. We call our Folk to return to kith and kin, to family, clan and tribe.

REALISM IS BETTER THAN DOGMATISM...
Blind faith has no place in Asatru. Our ancestors may have been sublimely mystical, but they were at the same time severely practical. We must respond to this world, and act in it rather than wait calmly for the next.

VIGOR IS BETTER THAN LIFELESSNESS...
Do, and dare! Take risks and taste the richness of life. We refuse to be mere spectators. Passivity is for sheep, and we prefer to be wolves!

ANCESTRY IS BETTER THAN UNIVERSALISM...
Asatru springs from the soul of the Northern peoples, and it is suited by its very nature to our needs. It is intertwined with our existence as a people. We respect all, but it is right and just that we honor our own ancestors first!

Good posting Darkwind!

To be honest, I know nothing about Pagans, Wiccans, Druids etc, however I have always had one rule for myself and that is the "do no harm, do as you will". Unfortunately, of course, sometimes I will say something and it may affect someone else in a way I never wished it to, I guess that is just unfortunate for the other person AND for me, because I will end up paying for it in some way or another.

I like to treat others how I would like to be treated too, again that doesn't always end up nice lol.
