This post is not meant for people to start posting their profiles or their life stories. I want to know one simple thing...WHO are you?

Do you defend the statements you make on these forums as harshly as you do on the forums. For example if someone says they don't believe in God you might go insane over the forums. Start posting...whatever. In real life would you do the same? Obviously you can't post the stuff, but you can meet face to face and talk it out.

People often say winning a debate over the internet is like winning the special olympics. It's harsh...cruel...rude and entirely immature, but true in its own way. Or is it? Do you think it is or isn't?

There is also the use of curse words. If anyone plays any online games like I used to(DaoC) people cussed all the time. They were angry...they were frustrated. In real life you may not insult the same people in the same fashion. It's easy to call a 6 foot tall 200 pound jock an idiot over the internet but is it easy to tell them face to face?

And just one last question to throw out there. I want to make sort of a spectrum of intelligence with this last question. Don't do much research into it...just answer. The "intelligence" I mentioned does not mean IQ but rather philosophical point of view or an otherwise different point of view.

Who is that greatest thinker of all time? Why?

I'll go ahead and answer.

Yes, I debate fiercely over issues if people bring them up to my face. If you think you can strut your stuff I can assure you I can strut my stuff better.

An internet debate can be useful only to yourself. Sometimes it is fun to crush a foe and laugh and giggle and feel good about it. The euphoric moment will pass and you will realize it was just a stupid debate. So...I don't really enjoy debates over the internet.

Well I'm 6'1" and 195 pounds so I have at least 1 inch on that guy. I think if I were shorter and skinnier I'd still "tell it like it is". Half the time they don't even care. They're idiots and they want help about it. I've been asked to tutor people over certain subjects, I've been asked for advice...etc etc.

I'm leaving the last question blank for now. My answer would give away the whole "spectrum" of difference I wanted to create. If I answer the question with who I have in mind then people will start to think..."Huh..so THAT is what he meant. It makes sense...sounds good. *Click* www.google.com Oooooo...this guy looks good. Copy-paste. <Add some insertion about why I think he is a great thinker> Submit Reply. Weeeeeee."

I also ask that people read this and DON'T MOVE ON YET. Think of the person and USE THEM. The first person that comes to mind. If you read other people's ideas then you can eventually lose yours in the flood of names that you may find to be better than your own. If someone posts who I'm thinking of then..good for you. I'm sure SOMEONE will.

maybe not the greatest thinker of all time but ( being serious) groucho marx (IMO) was one of if not THE most talented comic minds ive ever seen. his timing is absolutely natural and perfect. and his wit.. i have a few 'you bet your life' dvds- and you can see sometimes when he thinks of the joke- and is waiting for the timing. - not cause 'thats where the punchline needs to be to be funny' but because he KNOWS thats where the punchline would be funny.. and he will rattle off like 10 punchlines if someone leaves him open. not quite what you are lookin for i'm sure -(should throw off your little test tongue.gif ) .. i do think he is brilliant- and when i discovered them way back in junior high.. i laughed so damn hard i couldnt believe it (and it was ' at the circus"- NOT one of their funniest movies.. but obviously funny enough to have me laughin so hard i'm cryin the first time i saw it)
id like to think i stick to my convictions in person - the anonymous-ness of the internet is quite handy though .. where else EVER have SOOO many people from SOO many places been able to exchange ideas- without the fear of intimidation (in person)- ALL AT ONCE . pretty amazing.

oh.. and im mid 30s male straight floral designer (+music +art- but floral is my gig) . and i appreciate the magic in everything more each moment .

I was a college student but dropped out, restarting this fall (in a few days im so excited) I used to live in Florida but I now reside in Texas, I'm about 5'6 or 5'5 and weight like 145. I have hopes of one day becoming an actress but if that doesn't happen I'd like to become a doctor original.gif I dont really do much for fun here in Texas as its rather lame and Ive no real friends,. but back home iI used to go shopping, driving, goto class with my friends when i didnt have my own, eat out, goto the 2 local theme parks (right down the street from eachother and 5 min from my house! the mall too!).....Ooh and Im a gypsy too original.gif Like my family was gypsy til my grandmother married my grandfather and decided to start a separate life together original.gif

My name is stygean hue on and off the court. I most certainly defend all my thoughts when cross examined. I love dead things, mysteries, murder mysteries especially, and my family. Winning a depate over the internet isn't really my goal at all. But sence you asked. I thinks it's over rated. Contact with people you wouldn't normally meet is fun, but winning is not my goal. Discussion is more my goal. Really I dont' think that debating over bigfoot's existace will when the prize. (I failed debate in high school because I felt the same way about it. ) And the greatest thinker of all time would have to be this kid I knew in middle school. His name was Pavlic, was from Russa, spoke 4 languages and taught me more about life in one summer than most people learn in a life time. He was very well educated and often the things he said come back to me now and suddenly make perfect sence. He was truely briliant.

I'm 35, work in a no-nonsense environment (I'm a Factory Supervisor!) and I will defend to the death, if needs be, my opinion. I don't like big people stepping on the little peopele, and I don't like seeing people belittled for THEIR opinions, no matter how much they conflict with mine. For is it not the basic right to have an opinion anyway? There are certain people in this forum who like to play games or crush other people's opinions and they shouldn't be here. I'm not here to win debates, I'm here to share knowledge and opinions.
KyrusRose
Alright, I'll play. Not giving my real name >.> Its a guys name.. but I'm a 29 year old Tennessean, been married to my first love for almost 10 years, and mother to a perfect and very smart 5 year old whos starting kindergarten in the next few weeks... and sometimes mother to any number of my 9 brothers.. who just come around for the food I'm sure. I'm 5' 1/4" tall... ok fine I'm 5 feet! And a little on the chubby size for my hight.. give me 3 more inches and I'd be good! my (unknown) father is (was?) japanse, so I'm hapa (hapa this.. hapa that..) but really just a red neck barefoot country girl. I'm very rough around the edges, being around guys all the time doesn't help. Don't have much book smarts, most of what I have is from working hard when I was young. Stopped going to school when I was 14, had a full time job at 15, was raising (one of) my brother and my sister, paying bills, cooking and making sure they had everything they needed right up til I was 18-19 and left. It took a few years of tutoring by my husband just to learn to spell properly.. which I still have a problem with, but I can cook up a mean pot roast and budget a 20 dollar meal for 10 people! I don't work anymore, my husband, whom I love with all my heart, made sure I never have to work again unless I want to.. which I do sometimes. So I'm a house wife now, and enjoy it a lot.. worked way too much when I was young, getting to be a kid now.

As for debates.. I don't like being ignorant, its kinda personal, so when I have a fact, I hold it, and online or off, what I believe and can prove is gospel, and no ones going to back me down. I live in a very religious area, churches on every corner, and have to defend myself a lot.. I've got the backbone to do it too. So when it comes to online, I'm almost as harsh.. almost.. but no one on line is threatening me in real life so I can back down when things heat up too much. I know I'm not going to change minds, and even throwing facts at someone does little to dent a strong opinion, but I just can't help it, I like a good fight sometimes.

I cuss like a sailor off line, at least around my brothers, but try to keep it PG online and near the squirt, cause kids will repeat anything. But most of my cussing is grandma cussing... like "%)*&% I stubbed my toe!" Not "^()$&($ you you little ^*#(#" >.> Another thing, I'm really clumsy.. so the first one happens a LOT.

Last one.. the greatest thinker of all time.. And I can't answer that. I don't have much book smart. I have a lot of people I look up to, but none of them would be considered "great thinkers". I admire Michelle Duggar (the woman with 17 children) for her budgeting sense and patients.. and there is a little known poet I adore named Matthew Arnold. He had a view on religion and a way of looking at the mundane that mirrors but exceeds my own. I don't really know though.. they all seem so.. expected.. to name any famous author, scientist, teacher.. I just can't connect on that level I guess. So.. I'll have to pass on a real answer *shrugs*.

I'm a 40yo mom to a 20yo daughter who I basically raised alone while she and I ran around the world while I worked. I'm a software developer/consultant and have an erratic work schedule which leaves me WAY too much time to be here while I'm waiting for e-mail, transfering files, or compiling code. In real life, i'm super easy going, but I have opinions and on very rare occasions I'll engage in a face to face debate. I'm talkative and outgoing. I derive enjoyment from how very different people are, but I don't suffer fools gladly (just ask my ex husband and a couple of people here on UM. haha). I have at least 2 direct experiences with things that most people would consider "paranormal" but I'm not so quick to jump to that conclusion. I can only say "I don't know" what I saw/experienced. I'm a skeptic more or less. I'm a Quaker by faith, and my faith is extemely important to me... I work on it every day and every day I have a tiny bit more understanding (I'm working on that not suffering fools gladly as of tonight... gotta get over that one hahaha).

I guess you could call me a "Little Firecracker." original.gif I'm 5'3", 100 pounds. I am happily married with children. I am very outspoken, on and off the web. That being said, I wouldn't want to hurt anyone on purpose.

I have experienced the paranormal all my life. I grew up in a "haunted house." My parents didn't believe me until they experienced it themselves. (Sweet justice when they did original.gif ) I never encountered anything malicious. I think it just wanted to make its presence known.

In case you haven't read my other posts, I work in the field of vehicular homicide.

I speak my mind most of the time, to the chagrin of my husband. I don't like to be mean, but sometimes I am. I don't mean it. I will defend myself if I feel the need to I don't always feel the need to if I don't take the other person seriously. What I say on the forum I believe to be true, no tall stories. He said he didn't want detail on actually who you were, but everyone is doing it (maybe I misunderstood?) I am short and round. I like to read, I like to say I like to crochet but I am still working on a sweater for my daughter from two years ago and I have promised blankies for the grandkids for two years running too. When the mood strikes me I will do it. I work with the developmentally disabled, I have a son who is disabled too. Happily married most of the time, with six kids between us. Eldest is getting married this month and I made her dress. I am a Seventh Day Adventist Christian. I will try to be nice, but sometimes I am a bit blunt. Oh I think that Dave Mathews is a wise man. :-)

Who is that greatest thinker of all time? Why?

Well I wouldn't say everyone here states their opinions harshly, do they? I do know I can come across quite harsh, but I never intend to. I will try to make clear that I do or don't agree with a certain subject or opinion, but I never *intend* to be harsh. I do the same thing in real life. I never intend to be harsh, but sometimes I just pick my words a bit wrong, or apparantly have a certain tone to my voice that comes across quite harsh while I was just stating matter-of-fact what I think of something. It has caused a few fights, especially with my sister somehow, but since I don't notice it myself I can't really change it.

I don't know what's said about winning a debate over the internet, and I don't really care either. Debates, to me, aren't about winning or losing but about listening to each other's opinions and respecting them, respectfully disagreeing, so to speak. It may be extremely naive, but that's how I think about it.

About cursing. In real life I do curse when something annoys the hell out of me. However in, for example, a debate I think it's completely uncalled for. You can make a point perfectly fine without having to curse. In fact, things can come across much clearer if someone does not curse (or use netspeak, for that matter). But then again, I'm one of those people who will always try to stay polite to anyone, no matter how rude that person may be to me. So even over the internet, I will do my best to stay polite. It might not always work, if things clash, but I will try.

I don't think there is one greatest thinker of all time. If anything, the greatest thinker might be someone we have never heard of our entire lives. We only know the ones who searched a spotlight, so to speak. And besides that, the term 'greatest' is relative. People will think differently about it. It's like asking whether it will take long getting from point A to point B. One person will say "oh, no problem, it's a very short distance" while another will say "well, I'd take a car for it, because it's quite a distance if you're not used to it". In my opinion, everything is relative.

And in case you did want to know (I don't think I understood your message wrong, but I could be mistaken), I'm a 17 year old girl from a small town in the Netherlands. In 2 weeks I'll start my study of the Japanese language. The job I talked about, in the shop, was a weekends-and-vacations thing, but I loved it to bits. Unfortunately, because of my new study, I had to quit it and move to a new town. I did leave the job with a new very good friend and some life-experience (as my psychologist called it. Yes, I've seen a psychologist, didn't really like her though. She kept rambling on about how much I've been through already in this short life and how horrible everything was, where I tend to look at the brighter side of things.)
I enjoy listening to music, watching films, and reading books. Some of my favourites are Muse and Harry Potter.
I've been interested in the paranormal most of my life, having grown up with a mother who'd send me to an energy worker everytime I felt a bit ill. She is also interested in handreading and chakra's and things like that.
I fully wel realise that I don't know everything there is to know, but I do enjoy that I learn new things every day.

I hope I answered your questions well enough. original.gif
Mr Walker
"Life is a game.
It is a game you cannot win, given the eventual victory of entropy.
Do not let this depress you, however.
The important thing is the realisation that life is YOUR game.
You can set the rules (a bit like calvin ball.) And you can change them anytime you feel like it.
ALWAYS play by your rules, rather than getting sucked into playing by those of others."

That is a summarised version of my life philosophy. Now you know all you need to know about me. While I debate vigorously on these forums, you are only seeing about 3% of me, and a part which no one off line sees at all.

Oh and while I am a gentle soul, I always carry an AK47, both literal and metaphorical, purely for self protection. The world is full of bullies, who want you to play by their rules.

As for the world's greatest thinker, too many categories. A great thinker is anyone who thinks for themselves, and plays according to their own rules. Come to think of it, in the modern age anyone who can think independently at all, qualifies as a great thinker.

I don't differentiate Internet forums from letter writing, and chat rooms are conceptually similar to conference calls. A debate is a debate, no matter the communication medium. I've had people laugh at me for participating in discussion forums or exchanging E-mail with friends, but it sure beats listening to them drone on about graphic sexuality, whether directly to me, or in my presence on a cell phone call.

I find that those who mock Internet communication have deficient written language skills. Those who claim that phone communication is the old-fashioned way are full of bovine excrement, because the written word was the standard for international communication long before the telephone was invented. Whether the text is typed or hand-written is irrelevant.

Physical size shouldn't have anything to do with it, but insults and profanity don't solve disputes. If people's arguments are flawed, then they should be mature enough to accept defeat and not resort to kicking butt as a means of proving superiority. There are tactful ways of advising insecure people with violent propensities that they are wrong, and I have employed these techniques.

Well, I am more open on the internet then in real life because of my poor junior high years of being incessantly bullied. I've realised because of that I am more conserved, quiet, and realistic when I talk face to face. On the internet I have a freedom of choice, belief, ideals, and there are no real consequences to my actions. But I still believe the same thing either way.
Oh, and I swear alot more face to face, call me Lippy! (But mostly jokingly)

The greatest thinker of all time would have to be Plato. Just because I fell in love with his ideas when I was quite young and then later on I discovered all of his philosophies. Such as: His belief in the cosmic mind(God), and that there is a perfect version of everything percieved in this mind, and we are in the shadow of it. Oh, and these beliefs came before the Bible. My thought is that he was ahead of his time in basic beliefs of Christianity and pretty much all modern ideas of religion. True genius. Well, him and Plato were both geniuses but I would have to pick Plato

That's all folks!

I can't believe I entirely forgot about this post...but I did until about 5 minutes ago. Thanks for the replies...people can keep replying after this but I'll go ahead and say who my greatest thinker is and I'll explain.

Jesus *shrug*

He was real...I don't dispute that. What I DO dispute is the reality of God...but getting back to the main topic....

A thinker is not smart...they have heart. Jesus proclaimed his religion and faced the ends of sword and spears that people do not usually want to face. The very fact that he may have believed he died for everyone's sins gives him a very large heart. He is a man that really believed in what he believed in...which is more than 90% of the world can say.

So naturally I thought Jesus.

There is Einstein too...he had his ideas however silly some of them might have been. He stuck to it..he believed in the things that he was able to do and faced the criticisms. And again--he isn't a great thinker because of his smarts but because of his heart...his passion.

Just a question, do big ideas just hit you out of no where? Cause that's what's been happening to me lately. I'm a slow thinker, and never in my life have such big ideas hit me from no where. Right now I have two huge ideas stored in my idea vault(my head). That ever happen to you, Blue_Sphere?
Ghost Ship
I am very fortunate to be a prolific writer. I have more big ideas then i know what to do with. I could come up with a new idea for a book in the next 10 min. However, that's only a very small thing because using that idea and writing a book based upon it is a extraordianry amount of work and effort as im sure you know. Writing books is no easy task.

Jesus *shrug*

He was real...I don't dispute that. What I DO dispute is the reality of God.

A thinker is not smart...they have heart. Jesus proclaimed his religion and faced the ends of sword and spears that people do not usually want to face. The very fact that he may have believed he died for everyone's sins gives him a very large heart.

Hi, Sadonis,

I'm afraid I'll have to call you to task on the I.Q. test section of your survey. What I'm including below is intended as an exercise in logic only, and I am not a Christian, so I have no intention of turning this into a theological debate. Here is what I can draw from your statement:

You doubt the existence of God. Therefore, you do not at this time believe Jesus is the son of God.

Questions:

What is your foundation for trusting that Jesus existed beyond references to him in a highly debatable text, or artist depictions that didn't appear until centuries after his death?
If you don't have proof that he existed, then how could you consider him the greatest thinker, or know that he had heart?
In the event that you did accept Jesus as the son of God, then wouldn't God be the best thinker for creating and sending him in the first place?

Well, I guess since you asked... I am the same regardless where I am. UM is my first forum experience, and I am here to try and help explain some misunderstood things to people who are curious.
Solomon was the greatest thinker I think. He seemed to ponder all things and I am constantly referring to his writings and teachings.
Caana
The greatest thinker of all time is yourself, because what the individual thinks of, is what is to that individual. You could hear the greatest thing from someone else, yet it will never apply to you, only what you think does.

What other people think, you only use if it seems good and apply's to something in your own life, or you are forced to by an idea thought up, and enforced through law, but your the one who must think it good enough for you to apply it to yourself. So the greatest thinker really is yourself.

Those who consider themselves great thinkers, and put themselves on a box putting other ideas and opinions down, are the one's who end up being the most ignorent of all, however brilliant. With whatever evidence they may present.

In the end, there is only you, whoever you may share your life with, which again, makes the individual the greatest thinker.

Interesting question. grin2.gif

I'm a Dad of a 18 and 20 yr olds, in public i keep what i think to myself, on the net, i write whatever i think of. Those who take offense of that, are the one's that need to read your thread. I don't swear or target individuals for castration, i only want to hear what they may say about subjects. I will however, without swearing, give them what they need in a nice way if their rude to me, if it's over their heads, that is not my problem, it is their's.
Please Explain
I am the greatest thinker since i was born.
I cannot think of whoever was greater than me.

Ahhhh...what is this a paradox for some people?

I never mentioned the greatest thinker had to be someone that existed at all. It can be someone made up in a book.

Sometimes people find that the people they admire are under the covers of books. The courageous heroes, the handsome princes, the cleverly annoying Magicians....whatever you'd find your eyes averted to.

Jesus does not have to exist for his description and place in many people's lives to be heroic. He needs only have a place in their minds and perhaps their hearts.

Very nice, Sadonis. It's not often that one who doubts God's existence cites Christ as a role model or pinnacle in history, and you naturally sparked my curiosity in your selection. Thank you for the clarification. I'm always appreciative when confronted with originality. thumbsup.gif

I know what you mean about ages. Get this, when i remembered the scenario divirgence about the dead walking, after i had written what memory was still there about it, i saw an orange mass about the size of a football, up to that point it was the blue, purple and white gold ones. I think the orange one was the guy Sam or the boy i was, who had helped me to survive in that one.

Yes, i've seen some of those. One day i sneezed, and all around me were very large white gold ones that had come from my percieved person. They are the people we were, in other scenario's, and their memory's are what i have been experiancing, through my realself, which is the biggest one of all.

Later then. grin2.gif

Caana,

When I read of you and P.E. asking about blue dots and diamond dots, it brought a smile to my face. I wanted to ask for more information, but wasn't sure if it was appropriate.

I've been following P.E.'s contributions ever since Jj and I butted heads with the alleged Indigo Children. I like the way both you and he think. It's unfortunate that you took such a beating in the "Waking Up In An Alien World" thread, because you made some incredibly valid points about manipulation, false programming, and forgiveness.

Thank you, i knew there were still people out there that still cared about the human factors of tragedy's, and how they come about. Did you follow it all? They totally disregarded the real issue's other then the killings themselves, and of course, the whole mental illness thing. He was fine until they decided to blow out of prorportion what he said in the class. Why i stayed as far away as i could from school officials who are screaming meemies when i was in school. We watch on public t.v. far worse then what he wrote and talked about, did any of the guy's who wrote those movies get reffered to counseling because people thought they were going to be a danger?

It was exaberated because of the female who called and said she felt as if he was stalking her. It was his last yr. They ruined his life because of the mass hysteria that rules our proffessionals and the public these day's. No one would have hired him, making his degree useless. I don't agree with his killing the poeple who were'nt part of the mess. As i wrote in the same thread someone dragged up again, i don't blame him, except for those who were innocent. We can only hope everyone who was involved learned something from it, before they make someone else crazy enough to kill.

Deceptive perception is the mainstay of today's proffessionals and the gov. To maintain the failing ediface of their systems of control. I was not alway's forgiving, i was driven to the deep end a time or two myself, but like i wrote, what saved me was thinking of myself. If all i had done was think of those who had driven me, i would have killed every single one of them, and i would'nt have killed any innocents either, when i decide to take that sort of action, i take care of all the details, i would'nt have been caught. My training in that sort of thing was very in depth.

But again, thank you. if you have a question about the dots and stuff, please post me. Good night then

This post is not meant for people to start posting their profiles or their life stories. I want to know one simple thing...WHO are you?

I am exactly as I appear here online; fairly arrogant, argumentative, emphatic, overbearing, perhaps biased, maybe a bigot, maybe fairly narrow minded on certain issues and very broadminded on others; I'm also reasonable and considerate and quite kind irl as well.

I'd say on the whole my persona is accurately reflected here.

I believe the answer to your question, "Who is the greatest thinker of all time?" is ME!! or in anyone else case them we are all the greatest thinkers of all time, except politician they don't think they read scripts.
