Timmins, Ontario - Scientists have found 2.7 billion-year-old archaea fossils in a Canadian mine that indicate the organism coexisted with bacteria and eukaryotes.

The discovery confirms that the three known domains of life branched off in different directions 3 billion years ago. That finding broadens the known geographic reach of archaea during that time period, adding proof the ancient organisms existed both in sedimentary environments and in subsurface hydrothermal settings.

The discovery came during chemical examination of shale samples, loaded with oily lipid remains of archaea found in a deep Canadian gold mine near Timmins, Ontario, about 400 miles north of Toronto.

They are prokaryotes! The prokaryotes are divided into two domains: the bacteria and the archaea. Archaea or Archaebacteria are a newly appointed kingdom of life. These organisms were originally thought to live only in inhospitable conditions such as temperature, pH-extremes, and radiation, but have since been found in all types of habitat.
