ATHENS, Greece - Archaeologists excavating a sprawling prehistoric fortress in southern Greece have discovered a secret underground passage thought to have supplied the site with water in times of danger.

Dating to the mid-13th century B.C., the stone passage passed under the massive walls of the Mycenaean citadel of Midea and probably led to a nearby water source.

The passage would allow the people of Midea, about 93 miles south of Athens, safe access to drinkable water even in times of enemy attack.

Excavations at Midea revealed cut rock steps leading to the triangular passage, whose entrance was covered with a large stone lintel. At the entrance to the 5-foot-high passage, archaeologists found quantities of broken clay water jars and cups.

The 6-acre site was girdled with a wall of huge stone blocks, built around 1250 B.C. Excavations have also uncovered several buildings — some decorated with painted plaster walls — pottery, a clay figure of a goddess, seal-stones and an amethyst vase shaped like a triton shell.

Controlling a strategic road in the northeastern Peloponnese, Midea was first occupied in the later Neolithic period, in the 5th millennium B.C. It flourished during Mycenaean times and was destroyed by earthquake and fire at the end of the 13th century B.C.

Tabs to water supplies are not as rare as one would think. Any fortress successfully defended from a siege had either a very large cistern or a subterranean connection to a source of water far enough away from the fortress to avoid water poisoning by the enemy.

What, like making medicine, taking to the skies, going in the deep oceans, creating a way to speak to other in realtime even if you're 400 miles apart. Using something that doesn't exist in the natural world to visit and type into forums. Making icecream. ectectect

We're far more intelligent (we have the means to be so) and less barbaric. Yes we still war but we have war-laws as well as diplomats, we're as savage now as then, but far higher in technological terms.

I would disagree. Without the brilliant thoughts and discoveries of our ancestors, we would be nowhere near where we are in innovations. So, if it wasn't for the combined efforts of the human race, we not have that many innovations than our long dead ancestors.

My post had nothing to do with that at all.

Light was making out our ancesters were more intelligent and civilised than we are in the modern. Which is not true. I never denied our ancesters brought us here, what I did say is how much more advanced (smarter in technology) than those that resided in this Greek fortress. Something light seems to deny.

Well it makes sense, they did what they had to do to survive and thrive! Whats that old saying? Necessity and imagination are the mothers of invention! Or something like that, and somehow it got us to where we are today. But take away a few of our gadgets now and we would be lost and turn right back into crazy barbarians! Civilization is a very fragile illusion! IMO!

what i meant was we our technologically left behind. it feels like something or someone are restraining us to improve further.
