RAMAPO, N.Y. - Every dog has its day, and for those in this suburban town it's Sept. 9: That's when the pooches will have a pool party.

For the fourth year, Ramapo will mark the end of the dog days of summer with a canine swim at the town pools at the Spook Rock Park.

The event raises money for animal care, educates people about dogs, and gives the dogs a chance to have some doggone fun, organizers said Monday.

More than 250 dogs took a dip at last year's event, called the Dog Days of Summer K-9 Pool Party. Smaller dogs used the kiddie pool, while larger dogs used the main pool.

The town stopped the pools' chlorine treatment before the event because it couldn't figure out a way to keep the dogs from drinking the water. Humans weren't allowed in while the dogs were swimming.

I used to have a pool at my last home (unchloronated), and I used to pitch my cocker spaniels (2) in there occasionally to teach them how to find the steps out of the pool so they wouldn't drown if they accidentally fell in. One figured it out right away, the other was a doorknob and never figured it out.

Anyway, I can tell ya... UGH, cleaning the filters of fur was a NASTY mess. And that was one 16x34 pool and only TWO dogs.

Luckily, our town has this fabulous park with a 40 acre off leash dog run. It's also on a slow moving slough... the city put a chain link fence up in the slough and dogs can swim safely there any time they want. It's FUN.

Actually, I hope it is only fur that they have to filter..... doggy doodoos could be untidy blink.gif

Ya, typically dogs won't have potty problems when they're in the water, but once they're out, they could ummm, void themselves on the deck. That's kinda gross.

I can just imagine the filters getting really yucky! But in NY this is a one time a year occasion, and i think they probibly do this just before closing the pool down for the winter, then they no doubt service and clean everything up for the next summer. And what i like is that it raises money for animals and they educate people about animal issues! The park you have in your area sounds great for dogs, and that they have a place they can romp in the water anytime is wonderfull! But i imagine in NY specially the city areas don,t have many places for dogs to be able to do this, which is too bad! I think they are just providing dogs and owners a little treat at the end of summer and raising money and educating at the same time!
