Have you ever heard of body modifications?
As for me, some things people do with their bodies calling them arts, are really bizarre.

Body modification (or body alteration) is the permanent or semi-permanent deliberate altering of the human body for non-medical reasons, such as spiritual, various social (markings), BDSM "edgeplay" or aesthetic. It can range from the socially acceptable decoration (e.g., pierced ears in many societies), to the overtly religiously mandated to corporal punishment, to provocative statement by the rebellious (e.g., tongue splitting).
Some even become physically addicted to the adrenaline/endorphin release associated with a painful procedure in a way analogous to that experienced by those who self-harm. Some people experience an abstract but distinct compulsion to modify their body that appears to have no underlying or external reason.

What's your opinion on the topic? Why do people do these things, if most of us find them really disgusting?

I don't know, I am quite repulsed by those freaky guys. Yeah, that does absolutely NOTHING for my libido! eeewwww!

Personally i don,t mind a couple of tattoos, but the whole full deal is just YUCK to me! Oh well each to his own!

Well, I got and love all kinds of tatts and piercings. Although theres one form of bod mod that I just cant get my head around and thats Branding.

I bought a "Skin and Ink" mag about 9yrs ago and I still have it.

The Branded patterns were good, but there was this one pic that showed how they went to deep. "Seeing flesh is a bit much for".

they might do it cause they want to, or religon, clan's symbol, ect.

Which Religon?

They want to *what*? People on the street staring at them? be freaky? feel pain while cutting a new beautiful scar?
And about religion..

Maybe a tatt later. I need to find the right one though. Something spiritual, and not religious.

I love the tatts, my whole family has them, but I get turned off by tongue piercing...When someone talks, and I see that, it grosses me out...And I think nipple piercing is the worse...Ouch...

Piercing and tatts are quite normal nowadays.
I have ear piercings and a small tatoo on my neck.. My bf has pierced nipples and that's okay for me too.

But those horrible implants, or splitted tongues... or scarifications... that's not just right

Hey, each to their own.
I love piercings and tattoos and my face is jus covered in piercings, I have a growing tattoo collection too, and I have them cos I like them. Same reason why other people have full face tattoos etc.
I'd like to try branding and scarrification sometime in the near future. Also I'd like to have my tongue split it doesn't stay split forever it heals back. Why not try something at least once.

Some people like the pain. Like suspension can be relaxing to some people.

Like I always say about people...Whatever gets you off.

Personally I could careless what people do to themselves. They're the ones that have to live looking like that, not me.

I definately agree with Pandy.

I know a guy who has some of the skin on his arm braided. Yeah - braided. Cut off three long ribbons - just leaving them attached on one end so they don't die, braid them, and then carefully stitch them back on. They've healed into a sorta lumpy, fleshy braid - looks like Challah bread to me.

Whatever floats their boat............I personally don't see such 'art' as attractive or beautiful, but thats just me.

The ones that make me shudder are the ribbons braided down the back, if someone were to just grab those ribbons and pull hard......... it doesn't bear thinking about.



They do it to be different and rebel. Unfortunately, the older they get the more horrendous it will all look and seeing as to how the stuff they are having done is permanent.....

Personally, if a bloke came up to me and I saw he had those bumps and lumps, split tongue and God knows what else, I would run a mile, they actually make me feel sick.

Could you explain how your body modifications are/ would be any different to the ones you have mentioned?

I remember the man on the right from tv. he wanted to look like a lizard. he ended up having his whole body tattooed green.

There is the church, and other spiritual levels. African, Indian and South American tribes have used body modification for hundreds of years, its a right of passage, a symbol of power or achievement, a sacrifice to their gods, a way to mourn of a form of beauty. As Americans have adopted a little something out of every culture, its not surprising they took a little from tribes as well. Some people study the origins of a given modification and when they understand what it was used for (like a right of passage into adulthood, or the marks of mourning a loved one) they may use it for the same reason.
