Well, this is a long story but....one day i was on my internet on my computer. it was working fine, i closed IE, logged off, and left to go to my dads. I get a call from my brother a half hour later saying the internet isnt working. He tried all three of our modems, on 3 different computers, a nintendo wii, and an orginal xbox, and nothing works. so he called century tel and they said the internet is working, but it is not letting us ping to any websites, and some of our modems say the ethernet cable is unplugged, even though it is plugged in. I tried 3 other ethernet cables, same thing. with 1 of my modems, it says everything is plugged in, connected, and the dsl is working fine, but the internet doesnt work. so about 10 more calls to century tel and 3 calls to dell have gotten me no where, each time running ipconfig in the command prompt and checking my device manager. No one can even give me an answer to what it could be. no one knows? this is short story of it. ... so if you have any more questions about this story, just ask.

scanned your computers for viruses yet, and tried maybe a different browser if you have one installed.
tyler t.
i scanned my computer with spy bot and i have trend micro pc and internet security, and nothing was found except some spyware which i got rid of, but still nothing works. i havent tried a different browser because my wii has Opera versus my computers haveing IE 7 and 6.

You sure it couldn't be somthing to do with the phone line where the modem would be plugged into... given that seems to be the main constant?

Perhaps try one of the modem's at someone elses place if it works there.
tyler t.
yah, the dsl sync light is on on all my modems but one thing that bothers me is, on my xbox live troubleshooter and windows live messenger trouble shooter, they both talk about the not finding the DNS, could someone give me info to what that is? could it be something with the actual phone line?
Super Pancake
Did you check if your network connection is enabled

Click start then control panel then click on network connections right click on the connection that gets you connected on line (It usually has the name of the modem that is installed on you computer) if its disabled enable it try if the internet works.

A little about DNS

Check to see if everything is plugged in. EVERYTHING in the house and out.

depending on which modem im using, network connections sometimes has a red x through it and some times it says the modem is connected and but still doesnt work. and yes everything is plugged in correctly in my house. i have one question that i forgot to ask centurytel or dell. my century tel box is outside by my mailbox, and sometimes it gets flooded by my mailbox, so water goes in the box, could moisture getting in my cables wreck the internet?

This is one longshot, however, here goes.

When we first has broadband fitted, it was brilliant for a week and then one day, I went to go online and it just kept saying "you are not connected to the internet" etc etc. To remedy this, I unplugged the broadband modem from the computer, waited ten seconds and then reconnected it. It sort of reset itself, all was then okay.

Ironically, it would always do it whenever we manually defragged the computer, if it was an automatic scheduled defrag it was fine.

I hope you find a solution, it can be frustrating! sad.gif

I could be very, very wrong but I'll give it a shot. Seems like some of your stuff isn't for dialup, so I'll asssume you must have a speedier service. And for this, you need some sort of main modem that your internet goes into, that you connect all your stuff to, whether by networking, hub or wireless hub. If this is the case, read on, if not, then I'm already wayyy off base.

That one modem, that your internet comes into and sends out to all your stuff is most likely what's affected. These things can short out via power surge, lightning in the area, dampness or maybe it's just old. The lights may be on, but that modem can't talk to the internet anymore. So, perhaps you're on your computer and you run winipcfg and you see all the IP numbers just like they're supposed to be there, but when you try to use the internet, something tells you it's not there. That's because that main modem can receive a signal but not send one back out, and your sevice provider will tell you that the service is fine because it is. And they'll tell you to run this and that test and those tests will come up with whatever they come up with, and the provider will tell you it's your computer (when in reality, it's not) I'm willing to bet nothing is wrong with any of your stuff. They can't ALL be fried and not working, suddenly at the same time. But if the provider is working fine, and they cen see that you are able to receive a signal, they'll just think something is wrong with your PC, and any PC support you have will be scratching their heads at what's wrong because your actual computer seems to be working fine and should be having no problems.

Does this sound familiar? If so, ask for a serviceman to come out, and see if you can get a new main modem, else take your main modem to your service provider (you get better service that way) and say you think it's fried and want a new one. Either way, of they want to test it, make sure they test it in such a way as to make sure that, not only can it connect to the internet, but that it receive AND send.

I assume this because it wouldn't make any sense for all your PCs and gaming stuff's modems to all suddenly not work. So the problem would have to the the main modem the service is coming in to.

You are very close but, i don't really have a "main" modem. I used to use a 1 port then switched to the 4 port when i got it, so i never really had a main one, i just switched between them. I got 2 brand new modems from centurytel recently to test the internet, and neither work. but you are pretty brilliant for not knowing much about my case. well we have been having a lot of lightening lately, and about the dampness thing... my internet box is underwater a lot because it is down in a ditch by my mailbox, and we have been getting alot of flooding lately, could they have messed up anything.

The most obvious of all the problems listed is the water...electricty and water dont mix.And telephone lines that get wet, same thing.(unprotected ones)In our old apt,we had phone lines that ran up the side of the building, and whenever it rained, the internet(we had dialup at the time) would go out.And the phones would get so much static you couldnt talk.Even though we had them come out to fix the problem, they never got it right. It has to be the water.
