A top UK government official admitted the existence of UFOs in a secret document about a dramatic sighting.

The Ministry of Defence boss made the astonishing claim after dozens of eyewitnesses reported a "hovering" flying saucer in the skies in Shropshire.

His confidential report features in a new book by Timothy Good, who is regarded as a world expert on alien phenomena.

Good's book, Need To Know, features previously secret government papers about UFO sightings which have taken place around the world.

A whole section is devoted to a mystery craft which "shot beams of light" near RAF Shawbury, Shropshire, in the early hours of March 31, 1993. It had earlier been spotted in the skies above Devon, Cornwall and South Wales.

Up to 70 credible eyewitnesses later came forward to report the sighting, including some military personnel and police officers.

The newly obtained document shows that a Head of Secretariat for the Ministry of Defence wrote to the Assistant Chief of Air Staff following the chilling encounter on the night and was convinced it was a genuine UFO.

The release of the book comes as the MoD prepares to publish other UFO reports dating back to 1967.

The documents to be released also include witness accounts from civilian pilots and military personnel.

It's nice, and possibly a small step towards something bigger, but really, I'm sure many people already "know" of the existance of the phenomenon without needing official disclosure.

There was an exhaustive study of UAP's in Britain after WWII. I forget the name of the study (i'm now on a mission to dig it up!), but it was written about in a few books. One such book was "Operation Trojan Horse" by John Keel.

The head of the RAF at the time released the findings that suggested that the UFO phenomenon was real, however there was no evidence to suggest that the UFO's themselves were tangible, and were in fact more than likely ethereal objects more than physical ones.

Of course during the 60's the phenomenon changed, and there was a mssive UFO flap during the period of 1966 - 1967 which shaped our modern day thinking of the UFO phenomenon.

As such, the report has been forgotten about, despite the fact it came from a military source and largely proved the existence of UAP's. This is purely because its a long, type written report and is deemed 'boring' and probably won't see the light of day again.

Its sad to think thats what UFO 'enthusiasm' has become, the glorified hunting of videos on youtube.

*sigh*

What's so sad about it? How else is your average college student with limited funds and time going to educate themselves? The internet provides both mounds of reading and instant, well researched information as well as videos (most of which are on sites OTHER than YouTube. And it can only continue to evolve from here.

primarily from the point of view that we are only getting a few decades of the phenomenon...

Anything before the advent of the personal home video camera (which really only became affordable to the average family sometime during the early to mid 90's) largely gets ignored by the new generation of budding young enthusiasts.

Not necessarily because they choose to ignore it.

Like i've said on this site before, examining only the most recent cases (in the last few decades) we only get a perspective of a small sliver of a phenomenon that has gone on for a large part of human history. We can't make qualified judgments about UFO's by only looking at a small extract of cases.

It's the equivalent of trying to describe to a blind man what the New York skyline looks like, and only describing ONE building.

Documentation that existed before the advent of the internet plays an extremely vital part in understanding the phenomenon.

I agree with you, but honestly, expecting today's kids to become curious and enthusiastic in regards to reports and documentation prior to the seventies and eighties is like showing them Bach or Strauss - most are not 'mature' enough to become involved. Eventually, as the years go by, they'll start becoming more holistic and all-encompassing in their thinking and research. Besides, I think the field needs new blood and we could stand to learn a few things from new methods as well.
