WASHINGTON - First lady Laura Bush will undergo outpatient surgery on Saturday to treat pinched nerves in her neck that prevented her from accompanying President George W. Bush to Australia, her spokeswoman said.
Laura Bush will undergo "elective, outpatient surgery" to take care of two pinched nerves and was expected to return home the same day, said spokeswoman Sally McDonough.
The doctor will perform a "posterior cervical foraminotomy," a minimally invasive and common surgical procedure to relieve pressure on the pinched nerves, she said.
Many clinics offer the procedure on a walk-in, walk-out basis, although sometimes an overnight stay is required.
It is designed to enlarge the opening through which the nerve root leaves the spinal cord in the neck, for which the doctor can make a 1-inch incision and use an X-ray to guide the tools.
The first lady was being treated through physical therapy for several months, but her doctors determined that the conservative treatment was not working "and they recommended surgery," McDonough said.
The president's surprise stop in Iraq on his way to Sydney for the Asia-Pacific summit had raised some speculation that it was the reason his wife had not accompanied him on that trip.
But in an interview with a few reporters earlier this week, the first lady dismissed those rumors, saying "no, it wasn't a trick."

I've been waiting over a year to have similar surgery done and been told by my doctors that I could be waiting up to another 5 years unless I go private. The problem I have is that 3 of the discs that are supposed to be between the Cervical Vertabrae in my neck have completely worn away and causing nerve trappage as well as constant grinding and crunching upon any neck movement. With the nerves being trapped I have lost 70% of the strength and muscle in my left arm due to lack of nerve communication, along with 3 of the fingers on my left hand being completely numb constantly. No prescription or non-prescription medication is of any benefit (and believe me I have had all that the Doctors are permitted to prescribe for pan relief barring Morphine, Fentanyl and Oxycodone - all of which they are refusing to prescribe as it is a long term problem and long term use of any of those drugs can lead to addiction).

You beat me to it! I was thinking the same thing, there are so many people in real serious need of surgeries like this and there in worse shape like you, and myself though my nerve damage isn,t as severe as yours! I,m really sorry to hear about the constant pain your in! I can relate to constant and chronic pain as so many others can too! But you won,t see them scheduling any of us for surgery for many months, years and most will never get the heath care they need desperatly! But others only have to wince a little and the next day their getting the best treatment! And as you,ve said any relief we might get from medication is withheld because of the addiction factor! Like we have any quality of life now,Huh thats a laugh! And when you can,t work anymore and unemployment runs out, just try getting on disability without jumping through hoops of fire for the powers that be!
