"UFOs? You must get your facts right, and you can't tell the people." Is what margaret thatcher said in 1997 at a dinner party. Sorry if this has been posted before, i searched for something but couldn't find the same topic. I wonder, what she meant by this? If were not meant to know, then how can the people get there facts right? Is it aliens, or something else were dealing with? This qoute still makes me shiver.
Agent. Mulder

I think every government in the world has had to deal with the UFO phenomenon at some stage.

Unidentified craft that are able to penetrate 'protected' airspace I imagine would be a great concern. Whether they are terrestrial or not doesn't matter...it means that we don't control something we thought we had complete dominance over.

To "tell the people" we can't stop unknown forces from doing what they want would make any world leader nervous. And so denial of extra-terrestrial knowledge is the best policy.

To paraphrase the quote (the way I interpret it), "UFO's are not what we think they are, but the average person will still keep thinking what they have always believed".

I don't read it as "You can't tell the people", but more "You can't tell the people". As in, despite what govts tell us about the UFO phenomenon....people won't believe you.

I agree. Thats probably what is meant by the statement its self. So many myths and stories live for so long because people wont let go of it being a real possibility and no matter what you tell them they will still keep there view alive for decades and more.

From Wikipedia, allegedly the least trusted of sources. But in this case, since there IS a book, Wikipedia must be correct.

You Can't Tell The People is a book by Georgina Bruni and is classed as the definitive Account of the Rendlesham Forest UFO Mystery, most commonly referred to as the Rendlesham Forest Incident. It was published in hardback by Sidgwick & Jackson in November 2000, and in paperback by Pan Macmillan in November 2001. The book has spawned several TV documentaries and numerous press articles.
....
Margaret Thatcher, who was the Prime Minister at the time of the events, told the author in 1997 that she can’t tell the people about UFOs, but Bruni went on to investigate Britain’s most famous UFO case and her book reveals the story of the incident, the aftermath and the cover-up. In 1997, Bruni met with Thatcher and talked about Rendlesham, Thatcher is noted as saying: "UFOs! You must get your facts right and you can't tell the people".
