New species discovered
Borneo's clouded leopard identified as new cat species. A video of the new species is playing below...

Common Name Clouded leopard, Panthèr longibande(Fr); Pantera nebulosa(Sp)

Scientific Name Neofelis nebulosa
Neofelis diardi (Bornean)
Habitat Subtropical/Tropical Moist Forests
Location East and south East Asia. Bhutan, Brunei, China, India, Indonesia, Lao, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Taiwan, Thailand, Viet Nam

Population Estimated 10,000

Physical Description

clouded leopard is named after the distinctive 'clouds' on its coat - ellipses partially edged in black, with the insides a darker colour than the background colour of the pelt.

The base of the fur is a pale yellow to rich brown, making the darker cloud-like markings look even more distinctive.

The limbs and underbelly are marked with large black ovals, and the back of its neck is conspicuously marked with two thick black bars.

The clouded leopard is a medium-sized cat, 60 to 110 cm long and weighing between 11 and 20kg.

It does, however, have an exceptionally long tail for balancing, which can be as long as the body itself, thick with black ring markings.

The Clouded Leopard has a stocky build and, proportionately, the longest canine teeth of any living feline.

Well adapted to forest life, the clouded leopard also has relatively short legs and broad paws which make it excellent at climbing trees and creeping through thick forest. It can climb while hanging upside-down under branches and descend tree trunks head-first.

WOW WOW WOW!!!
I absolutely love it, a new leopard.

Mind you, I'm biased because my son and I collect leopard paraphenalia. I can't wait to show the little fella when he gets up!
That new one is really pretty too, much darker than usual. And I was surprised by her longer than usual tail and fat paws, she really seems to be adapted well for her environment.

Thanks Mark.

Wow, absolutely gorgeous. I love big cats, they look so harmless and beautiful but could kill you in an instant.

A beautiful creature no doubt, but same as the other thread (why a new one? Maybe a merge comming on?) it seems many have this information somewhat twisted.

Not a new find, this is declaring a more precise definition.

For fifty years the Clouded Leopard was regarded as a monotypic genus with four subspecies:

Neofelis nebulosa brachyura: Taiwan (presumed extinct in the wild)
Neofelis nebulosa diardi: Borneo, Sumatra, (Java - absent since Neolithic times)
Neofelis nebulosa macrosceloides: Nepal to Myanmar (Burma)
Neofelis nebulosa nebulosa: Southern China to eastern Myanmar

It has the longest canine teeth of any living feline. Mini sabre tooth wink2.gif Very cool.
