As cool as the Megalodons where I don't see quite so much around on the Sarcosuchus imperator. This topic may however been put up before but I thought it a rather neat find to share I'd found the site on it a long time ago and just stumbled upon it again. http://www.staabstudios.com/sarcosuchus.html is a great site on replica of the massive creature.
"Sarcosuchus would have weighed about 8 metric tons (or 8,000 kg), which equals 8.75 English tons (which equals about 17,500 pounds!) That is about 10 times as heavy as the heaviest living croc"

http://www.davidireland.com/truestory2.htm
This has a great story for anyone interested of possibly the largest known crocodile. We know of the largest crocodiles that have been captured but this one from what I last researched would have just out done the largest in captivity, though there is no real way of knowing.

Just the curiosity of whether these are abnormally big crocs or where distantly related to the Sarcosuchus imperator.
Whatre you guys thoughts? Also what mega creatures would you like to see? I think a mega tiger would be kinda cool

Holy schnikes why was everything so damn big back then o_0

It is unlikely that Sarco has any direct descendants, as interesting as that would be. Their prey died out, and they would have had extreme difficult in adapting.

I think big crocks today are examples of what crocodiles would have grown to in an environment with plenty of food and without being hunted extensively by another species. In short, the whopper crocks we occasionally hear about are probably normal for a healthy wild population.

I dunno we have plenty of croc spots here in Australia where they grow and breed healthily plenty of food good conditions and pretty much no other species that hunt them. I cant think of any species we have here in australia that would try hunting a croc the only one would be man. But all in all they have pretty good conditions and still its rare for them to grow that big. I think its more just every now n again getting a very abnormal sized croc like the worlds largest dog n such.
But it is known that food isnt as big n plentiful as back then but still im sure that the size had to do with the species of croc too.

that huge prehistoric croc has a very weak looking jaw, very slim indeed.... nowhere near as powerful as a T.REXs

probably a fish eater only

All I can think about is - just imagine how many pairs of shoes you can make out of that one. Just kidding. I have never seen anything like it. Amazing.

Haha, it actually feeds on huge dinos, maybe including one up to T-Rex' size. Believe it or not. And OP, yes you do have plenty of food for the crocs in OZ, especially the salties. But think about this, in this era, what food can they get that the size equals something like, say, sauropods or even, T-Rex?

Im not sure if this was directed at me, sounds like it. I think ive confused what im rambling on about at times a little hehe, I was more or less talking bout the BIG ones we have today the ones that seem like big abnormal crocs.
We have plenty of food here for our crocs and space for them to grow and they grow as big as they can but we still only get a rare amount that come out HUGE.
So I think its more just every now n again you get a big animal by accident, I dont think if we had bigger food for them to eat theyd grow bigger. Maybe after a bit of evolution and a long long time for it to take effect itd just make 'em fat for the time being. But yea we don't have dinos roaming round these days to be able to feed the ones we had back all those millions of years ago.

All in all it was just a comment to someone elses response of the whole food situation. We have lots of food n space n still they grow as big as they grow its just every now n again we get a real whopper so it seems its more an abnomality than a situation of one croc gets more food than the rest.

Hope this made atleast a drop of sense tongue.gif I think i may have confused you all a little more

Wasn't there a crocodile in Africa named Gustave over twenty feet long? Is it just a legend?

Well, the food of the past could have been filled with more protein and just having more of it. The species as a whole takes a long time to grow that big. Each ones descendants would have been slightly bigger than their parents and so on until they reach the maximum that environment can handle. They would have had more space and less competition in the past.

And these big crocs are just abnormailities. A crocodile, like all reptiles, never stops growing. If given time and good diets and environment without too much stress and competition, the present species we have could get huge. But these factors are rarely met in the wilds of today, with hunting and competition between each other.

confused..... no i understood you, that 40' supercroc is a large prehistoic reptile..... so its vast size makes sense, in fact what would be odd; is if this same croc was only 20ft long. grin2.gif but that supercroc lifesize replica looks too slim all over, i would've made it far heavier looking...bulkier, uglier, especially its skull..

No where it is said that Sarcosuchus would eat huge dinos. Though it did attacked juvenile dinosaurs that came to river banks or ponds to drink water and would eat them. Paul Sereno is however convinced that this croc could take down a 30 foot long dinosaur with ease.

Still it would be dangerous for this animal to attack a sauropod as big as T-Rex or even bigger. Because victory could not be guaranteed in such fights.

And not to forget that this ancient croc have indeed faced competition from big sauropods like Spinosaurus and Suchomimus. And it is not proved yet that Sarcosuchus was at the top of the food chain in its age.

However their is an another Super Croc which is called Ramphosuchus. This croc is believed to be the biggest ever discovered and it is estimated that this creature could reach 15 m in length.

Sarcosuchus can thrive on eating large animals like Hippos and other crocs. They can even attack and take down Elephants or other large creatures that frequently go to rivers and ponds to drink water.

Though there were many large bony fishes that were abundant in the time of Sarcosuchus and they fed on them. Now such large bony fish are seldom found in rivers and ponds around the world.

What about Deinosuchus?

This croc is also among the biggest ever discovered. It is an ancient relative of modern age alligator and Nile croc and lived about 75 million years ago.

This is the skull of a Deinosuchus:

There is also an ancient caiman that lived in Miocene period and was nearly as big.

yea, a T.REX at 40 odd feet would be a big predator to take on, plus the t.rex would be wary near water, but a croc attacks anything that gets too close, it just triggers a feeding response inside its tiny brain..... so it would probably attack a t.rex

would it kill trex, yea if it grabbed it in the right place and dragged it under, a croc is very strong indeed. what about the TREX's massive bite, the croc would be the same too, plus the croc would have more bite resiliance than the trex, far thicker semi-armoured skin.... that is, if TREX actually looked like we think it did

I was looking at the web site you linked prokofiev and found this pic does anybody think this looks like the reports of chupacabra.
