Full Version: Looking for 'god' names pls...

My personal collection of 'god' names for my personal purposes. I'm adding to as I find and understand them.
I would so appreciate any additions that you might have. What I'm looking for isnt the name of all types of gods, but the names of the 'grand, all everything' god in any language...
Thank you!

Note THIS IS MY OPINION and observation of the 'words' denoting 'god' to date:
As I glance these, it dawns on me that if the 'RETURN' of the 'messiah' ever turned out to be a 'female'... No one would ever guess she's been here, might be here, maybe was here many times over. Everyone seems to be searching for a 'male' figure. Funny to me... to say the least.
Even the 'Hidden Imam' is supposed to be a 'male' figure.

Shame on 'religion in general' .. to not see past this. I think we might miss something if we stick to it all...

Perhaps that's why we're all still 'waiting and looking' for something. Perhaps we only look for 'half'... maybe we only use 'half' of the equation when looking for the 'god theory' that science looks for as well? 'Big bang', Singularity, Missing Link, etc...

The rest of this is just a list - feel free to glance - I'm not going to nor do I welcome 'debate' over what's right / wrong / indiffernt. I'm looking for additons to a list of 'words' and thats all this is to me. thanks!!!

Link to my blog for the current list: In case you're interested, but I didnt want to post the moster here in the topic as I feel it isn't necessary. Thanks again for any help anyone can give me. It's a matter of personal research.

Edited: I've edited my words up there to be as 'non-debateable' as possible. This is a 'word' list. I have an opinion on the observation of these words as they stand so far. Nothing more, nothing less. The collection is for 'number' analysis actually - so pls don't think I'm implying anything more here then a plea for assistance. As I'm not of any religion nor do I study them heavily. I look to you as a more 'knowledgeable' source during my collection process. original.gif Thanks again.

So what are you saying? we should take all religious figures, and make some of them female, some of them black, some of them gay, and some of them disabled so that
religion is politically correct?
These stories as as they are, you can take them or leave them, you can't change to so that they better fit the time and place you live in, that would be forgery
DemonWatcher
Elohim
Iehovah

all i can think of this time
northwest
Actually in english iehovah is spelled Jehovahbut most scholars as I understand agree that it is only a name that sticked due to tradition and thatthe real way to read it is Yahweh

Also Eloah (singular of Elohim) Also Ilah but that is just deity, not specific god, but it can also be used in reference to Allah

Thanks for you input NW, but as I said, i'm looking for a list of names. Not debate. I don't strive to 'change' anything. It is my personal opinion that we only search for a 'male' figure - as most of the books/text/names I've come across suggest.

This will be the only reply I make here. If you'd like to add to my list - pls feel free.
Thanks!

My co-worker says to put down Jesus Christ as a name for God.

Now, I said to him that I thought Jesus was the Son of God. But, he says he IS God. I was unaware of that. So, I am putting his contribution to the list on here. Thanks!

Talking about the question of what Jesus is with a lot of mainstream christians is a lot like an endless computer loop: the conversation freezes and repeats the same cycle of sentences over and over and over until it crashes

Personally, I think Jesus is perhaps the same kind of messenger as Gabriel is, but holds a very specific and special place in the story.
The "Lamb", being a very unique mission among all other entities.
In that I think you are right, that he can't be said to be the head-god, but if you put Jesus as god, you might as well
put the entire council, in which case this thread would never end, because Hinduism has thousands of such figures.

When I read the original post, I thought this is gonna be some long list.

I put the list on the link to my blog instead - cuz yea, it can and most likely will get longer.
After my 'collection' process, I'm hoping to kinda break it down into the 'mainstream' languages vs not so 'mainstream'.
'god' seems to come by many flavors but I'm also looking for more then the mainstream versions of the word.
There is more then 'christian', 'islam', 'asian' versions, none of which I'm familiar with.

If anyone knows 'Indian' names too - that would also be appreciated. Native American Indian I guess... dunno if I'm PC or not, but I don't have the formal words to describe what I'm looking for....

Just all and every form of the 'main' god name...
For example, I think the Mayan 'symbol' or 'word' is a zero with a one inside of it...
Anything unique, not mainstream too... including 'symbol' like the example of Mayan or Hebrew YHVH (as example of similar).
I don't know how 'accurate' information is out on the net so I thought I'd ask 'people' who are of faith in some way.

I can research what 'science' calls things as this is more 'clearly stated' when I search internet.
Thanks again!

Oh you rock!! Thanks for this - and I think that your lefthanded-ness drew this way better then I could have with pen and paper even! Again - thank you!!!

no problem, anyway, it would be interesting to note with this, that at one point in early Hebrew history (I think it was during time of captivity) the name of YHWH was forbidden to say. The commandment saying not to blaspheme the name YHWH, was interpreted as
not to pronounce it. Instead they used various other words , like Adonai

which by the way , come to think of it can be another entry into your list of names.

Adonai is what we call Lord in English (well not "we", my language is not english, but considering how much english typing I do in one day, my thoughts have actually became bilingual and it is a very natural language for me, love it)

I think they also used indirect references to god, such as "the name" , instead of actually pronouncing it.

And speaking of YHWH, "Yah" is a short version that was also used

And speaking of short versions, I also remembered El . That word is probably the grandfather of the word Elohim/Eloah as far as I can tell, because El was not only a Jewish god, but was the word for god found in some other ancient civilizations.
This is also the word Jesus used on the cross: "Eli, Eli, Lama Sabachthani"
although in this case letter i is added, which is usually translated as "my god". Sort of like saying housei for "my house"
at least that's how I have come to understand it.

Don't know how many you have so far, but check out this link for many, many names of deities from all over the world. Loads of other links there as well.

Hey She-Ra - just curious - off topic but since you put it up... May I ask what your cartoon is all about? original.gif If you don't mind.
