Remains of ancient beast found in N.W.T. permafrost

(CBC) - A man walking in a small Northwest Territories community has stumbled across what paleontologists believe could be the carcass of a steppe bison that roamed before the last Ice Age.

The remains of the beast were uncovered in the permafrost near an eroding cliff, said Shane Van Loon, who first came across the pre-historic find last week while walking along the riverbank in Tsiigehtchic, about 230 kilometres south of Tuktoyaktuk.

Van Loon said something strange was jutting out of the permafrost from an eroding cliff, so he climbed up for a closer inspection and noticed the frozen animal hide and bone, as well as a large-horned skull that measures one metre wide from horn to horn.

Some of the animal's hair and innards were kept intact by the perennially frozen subsoil, he said.

Van Loon said he kept quiet about the discovery for several days until some surrounding ice melted and the animal's remains fell to the ground. Then he collected what he could and notified officials.

"I got all four hooves - one missing toes," he said. "I got a back leg and two shoulder blades and half the spine, and the head."

A piece of the animal's intestine was dried out and still felt rubbery, Van Loon said.

I know, right? Don't ya hate it when you post something really neat and interesting and no one pays any mind cuz their busy posting on the Britney Spears forum, ROFLMFAO!!

I find this really neat. I love it when they find animals and people with their insides and everything still intact. It gives us the opportunity to learn sooooo much more than we could ever speculate with just bones. I know dinosaurs didn't live in ice of any kind, but I so, so, so want them to find a dinosaur that is somehow preserved like that.

Awesome! It's always an achievement when they find a new species!

That would be amazing-to find a dinosaur somehow caught in ice, highly doubtful, but, still, it would be cool. Or if they coudl find the remains of a dinosaur like they found human remains in Pompeii. There was a humungous amount of volcanic activity back then, maybe that is a greater possibility.

I think it,s great their finding amazing stuff like that! It will be interesting to hear what they find out about it! I,m pretty sure as the glaciers melt they will discover quite a few surprises!

The head looks like a cross between a modern bison and a water buffalo.

I doubt we'll ever find a dinosaur in ice because this could only happen if it immediately became cold after the animal died and didn't warm up significantly until today. I don't think they had ice ages back when the dinosaurs were around.

Question: does anyone know why they didn't have ice ages when the dinosaurs were around?

the correct pronounce meant of the towns is tuk-toy-yuk-tuk and siga-chic.

As much as global warming sucks, it has been really neat to see all the surfacing animals in the ocean and the frozen stuff being discovered.
