Russian Kosmos 3M Rocket Lifts Off from Plesetsk

11.09.2007 Kosmos 3M rocket launched from Plesetsk cosmodrome in Northern Russia at 5:05 p.m. Moscow Time on Tuesday, September 11, has successfully orbited military satellite for the Russian Ministry of Defense.


Kosmos 3M is a two-stage, liquid fueled launch vehicle, made by Omsk-based Polyot Production Association. Kosmos is capable for launching payload of up to 1500 kg into low Earth orbit. This launch system can be used for launch of several small or medium sized satellites in one launch. Kosmos has been operational since 1960s and has flight history of more than 750 launches.

Polyot Production Association is a key Russian space industry entities. Polyot joined Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center as its new branch in February, this year, by presidential decree.
