A friend of mine learned Arabic from the Rosetta Stone programme. But I hear it is like 300 dollars. Worth it if you have the money to spare.

If your going to donwload audio language tapes agian I suggest Pimsleur they do have it in Russian and German. I used it for Spanish and got an A in Spanish 1, then got exempt from taking anymore language courses cause I was pretty good. I'm currently using it too learn japanese very hard.

I'll say it will take you 3 months tops to at least hold a good conversation if you do a one lesson a day at least twice a day. There is usually three levels 1 beginners, 2 intermediate, 3 expert. Each level has 30 lesson, each lesson is thirty minutes and it comes with a book. I'd say do one lesson 3 times a day.

I highly suggest get in a group at least 2-3 times a week it will be useless if you don't try to speak it with anybody check a local college they usually have language groups, I forgot some of the Spanish I learned because I have not spoken to anybody in months with it.

Also go to your local library and read baby books then after a week or two move up to comics, then short stories, then newspapers to at least know how to read the language, but it will take a lot longer to get to a level at which you can read a good novel maybe a year or two most likely more.

And of course there are plenty of free sites for additional resources.

Well i still remember the basics of russian and how to ask if you speak it or english, where is the bathroom etc ha and i think i tried to download that course as well in russian, might have been the one i used,i also have a russian-english dictionary and an english-russian dictionary, think that will help at akk?

Main reason i want to learn is im backpacking europe for a long time next year and need to be able to hold my own.

Plus people respect if you learn atleast a little of there language.

I see so you won't have much time to learn it thoroughly, I have a friend that is Russian he once told me learning Russian is huge they really do respect you a lot more some may even go as far as call you Russian for knowing the language.

If your short on time I would say hang out with somebody that knows Russian/German before you go on your trip and try to listen as much of the audio tapes as possible.

You could go to a college used bookstore. I'm not sure if it is limited to just college students or not though. I'm sure you could find russian and german from the basics all the way to advanced.

This just came to mind. You may also benefit from this website. You can find a person there who will teach you russian or german personally through messenger service, phone, on the forum....etc. Or if you cant find someone willing to teach it (which I think would be pretty slim; I joined the forum to find someone help me learn Creole) post that you would like to learn either language and someone will contact you.

I once aspired to learn Russian. I went to the library and for free borrowed Pimsleur and another system on tape. It helped a lot. Also, I watched the Russian TV station and I volunteered to teach English to Russian immigrants. They were very generous and kind to me. After I taught them English, it was my turn to learn Russian.

Assimil (made in France) courses have always helped me to polish up my languages when I am rusty. I don't know if the tapes are available in the US.

Go to your local public library and ask a librarian. Most large ones have tons of foreign language stuff and it'll be free.
