Im thinking of getting a "real" job, I've worked around for neighbors and stuff but nothing like getting a "pay-check".

Any suggestions, a few of my friends have gotten jobs at some local fast food places but I wouldn't really feel comfortable there, that food usually makes me sick. I was thinking about a few Video Rental Places and Movie Theaters that have open spaces..the hours are a bit longer but the jobs are pretty light..

Ohh and I was thinking of taking up a musical Instrument, perferably bass guitar..any tips on which one I should get or some "most know" information? Are amps really worth it if im just going to be practicing or do they really improve the sound much??

I worked in a video store when I was 15/16ish during the summer 13 hours a day, and after school. I practically owned the place being the only one in the store. Plus I got to watch videos when no customers were around grin2.gif. One of my favourite jobs.

I was like WTH! to the tropical fish comment, then I looked under your name to your country, lol. Sounds fun, I like animals heh.

My hobbies aren't things that can be sold, people dont want to pay me to play games and watch televsion tongue.gif, I've been around guitars a (My friends and cousins all own some) so I think I could pick on the Bass pretty quick, always wanted to busk with an instrument, usually I just stand there and steal jokes from comedians as people throw pennies in my backpack.

yep... the benefit of selling tropical fish is they are easy to die grin2.gif if you dont know how to pet them. so... more money to me!

Yeah newspapers were NEVER appealing..helped my friend deliver some around our block once, we just ended up dumping them on peoples drivesways, seriously, they should start watching T.V and save some goddam trees/paper.

If you do go anywhere, go work at a smaller family owned business rather than working in some greasy fast food place. You get better respect and treatment and a lot of the times more flexible hours.

EDIT: I just saw the bass guitar thing after I posted, so I will add on to my post. I am a bassist myself, if you want to learn to play bass, try to advoid classes and teach yourself. Classes will make you dish out money for an acoustic and take a longer time to start playing seriously. A lot of people will learn on a regular 6 string accoustic, but I just skipped to bass. On amps issue, get some practice in first, and then when you get more serious buy an amp.

Yeah, around here the official age is 15 and a bit (I think that fifteen-and-nine-months was bandied around for a little bit), but most places which are small and locally run wouldn't have a problem hiring a mature, respected fourteen year old.

The trick is to make sure that you look trustworth and ready to work.

You should probably also figure out what industry you would like to work in as well. For example, in hospitality it would be easier to get a job at your age then in retail, but you also wouldn't get paid as much.

Either that, or get waaay good with the bass and become a rockstar!

i started bass when i was young still play it now, love it teaches you calmness and rythm, and nothing like playing along to your favourite songs. dont worry about amp 20 watts is loud enough especially with neighbours, but if they are deaf get a 100 watt one grin2.gif

Start with a crap bass and then improve you will start to get the idea of how good bass guitars are with money wink2.gif

And when it comes to getting a first job, dont bother when the benefit system pays you for sitting around laugh.gif then you can play bass allday and think about being a rock star original.gif its in the realms of possibilies wink2.gif

I will try not to make this a "I worked in a coal mine at the age of 6 that I had to walk four miles to get to in the snow-uphill, both ways" Kind of a statement, but my first job was in a liquer store that was near my home. I was 12 years old and used to go in all the time to buy soda and candy. After a while the owner asked me if I would like to help cleanup on the weekends and I jumped at the chance. It was a great job. I stocked shelves, dusted bottles, cleaned up...

I was the only kid in 6th grade who could name every brand of alcohol on the market. Not exactly a great claim to fame, but it made for a lot of raised eyebrows when adults would find out my knowledge of quality brandy versus the swill made on the east coast...

My first job was when I left school at 16, I worked full-time in an office in London. It's great when you get your first wage thumbup.gif

Go for it InHuman, as you said you don't have to go for any fast food places if you can't stand them.

Don't work in a gas station if your forced to yell at people on the intercom, about not leaving the gas cap inside the nozzle. I got flipped the bird, twice. Finally after I left that job, they ended up fixing that problem by having moniters so you coul'd see who was doing what while trying to work the register. It was a real pain.

My first job was in fast food. It really wasn't all that bad. As long as you do what you're supposed to do and do it correctly, they don't give you too much sh**. Well at least my boss didn't.

As far as bass, unlike some, I do recommend lessons - if you're serious about it.

I agree with pandy, Take lessons, private lessons. The place where I go has good connections like my teacher wanting me to come to his recording studio and record an album. I am also going to play for an Octoberfest that is held by my house.

But beware, if you are serios about music, it might take over your life. But don't let your fingers hurting make you stop playing.
Buy a small 10-watt practice amp.

Gonna spend the weekend looking for jobs, or begging for money.

TEll ya what happens soon.

begging is found to be quite lucrative, make sure you put on dirty clothes and get a punch in te eye. i want half laugh.gif
