Gigantopithecus Blacki was the largest primate ever to roam this earth -
You may not have heard of this creature, Probably because next to no fossils or bones of it are left.
Though it only went extinct some 100,000 years ago. They were found in China,India, And suspected finds for Vietnam.
Gigantopithecus Blacki was about 10ft tall and weighed about 12,00 pounds.
Though nothing can be proved officially for only mandibles and teeth have been discovered.
There are a few to theories for it's extinction -
These great animals were plant eaters - Bamboo to be more exact.
And bamboo has been known for periodic-die offs,
And competition with the Giant Panda with also had similar eating habits.
One more factor is the - Homo erectus.
The reason for lack of physical evidence is because in china [ Because the bones of these apes must have been fairly large ] Were said to be `Dragon` Bones. These would cure you if you were - And hence why there is next to nothing left of this beast. I, myself think that this is a most interesting discovery.

I remember these guys from my biological anthropology studies. The professor swore that the Big Foot is really Giganto B. (or in the family of) and it would just be a matter of time like the Panda and Gorrilla (both thought of as local legends orginally) before it is discovered. He was a strange fellow. Looked like a cave dweller himself!

yep my ancestors in laos are full of legends discribing big-foots, because they live in the high mountains/jungles and they had no technology so these spots are a good place where big-foots live

Awesome. Although I think one of these could break a panda in half if the panda was eating all its bamboo.

" ... Gigantopithecus Blacki was about 10ft tall and weighed about 12,00 pounds."
6 TONS?
I read that and thought, "Noooooooo ... that can't be right." Then I went into the link and discovered the original poster had a typo. It should have been posted as 1,200 pounds.
Whew! That's more like it.
For a moment there, I wondered if Gigantopithecus Blacki was a candidate for Weight Watchers!
An interesting post, though.
I can't imagine a biped 10 feet tall and weighing 1,200 pounds. I don't believe in Bigfoot but sounds like he's a descendant of Gigantopithecus Blacki.
Be quite a shock to round a bend in a trail and meet such a beast face-to-face!

I agree with your quirky professor.
