I was just wondering what you think makes a good poem? What do you look for? What would you like to see? What topics do you love to read about? What feeling would you like to have when you finished reading a piece?

Hi...I personally enjoy poems that are written straight from the heart, with all the emotions and feelings being put down on paper..Alot of these poems reflect happenings in my past and bring back memories...But basically, I enjoy everyone's writing on UM. original.gif

I agree! Straight from the heart, a lesson learned a profound experience shared will always be well recieved by me! And there are so many wonderfully gifted poets and writers on UM! I,m constantly amazed by the talents that have made me laugh, cry, think and sigh! And to all of you i have to say Thank You! yes.gif thumbsup.gif

To find something unexpected. Like in a play on words twisting one way, yet ending up were you never thought it would take you. To be so far from the truth is to be so close to what you knew. We all need answers.

A theme that someone can relate to. Whether it is the cliche theme of unrequited love or the happiness you get from mucking stables. A good poem can make you be there and feel that same emotion that you get from either writing it or experiencing it. It's like Shakespeare. His sonnets were about a poet, a young man pressured into marriage and a dark lady...just because he did a good job doesn't mean he experience it himself.

A good poem tells a story, has a theme, has emotion and expresses it to the reader. Poems that require too much intellectual capacity are poems that you'll find that I hate. Shakespeare doesn't require MUCH intellectual capacity unless you're searching for symbols, alliteration, etc.
