I was wondering how do 'ghosts' become visible to us, and then turn it off again, and why?
I don't know, I've just looked on the UM Encyclopedia at ectoplasm and got this:
Ectoplasm
Category: Metaphysics and Psychic Phenomena
A strange substance which can allegedly extrude from the body of a Medium, and can form into a variety of physical shapes and forms. Ectoplasm can be either solid or in a vapour like form, and is often described as being white in colour.
Do ghosts materialise "in a vapour like form" like ectoplasm? Would that answer why they wax and wane and are sometimes transparent? and if it's not ectoplasm, what is that that forms their shape? I don't know the answer to this.
Can anyone enlighten us?

Well I could have a possible explaination depending on your belief.
There are theories out there that state that there are parallel dimensions. So lets say that a ghost is a living person in another dimension. In order for there to be different dimensions they each have to vibrate on a different frequency, just like radio and tv stations. So you know sometimes you get an overlap by mistake where you pick up the wrong channel on a tv or whatever, well this could be the same case in the dimensions. There could be amomentary change in freq. in one nearly changing it to that of our own, and voila, you have a sighting. That could be why they appear to be there sometimes and then they're gone.
Another could be this. Ghosts and spirits are a form of energy right? Well, lets say that in order for a ghost to show itself, it must have enough energy to become apparent, sometimes when they don't you get EVP's and possibly an orb or 2, just another form of energy, maybe at a lesser value then a full apparation. So when a ghost can draw enough energy from it's surroundings, it may be able to become visible for a second or 2 and then fade, kind of like a battery that is about to die ... when it uses it energy it dies.
Just some ramblings from myself. More than likely not right, but I'm thinking.

Hi Reg, Ectoplasm is the substance that oozes out of spirits. So when we see photos with smoky mist, or cloudy type images that is ectoplasm. You cant see it with the naked eye, but sure can in photos, as we know. This is ecto in my bedroom during my haunting. I only saw a little red wormy thing, but this is what came out in the photo. This is old school ecto. on photograph. There's lots of thoes kicking around the net. Just got to do a search of ectoplasm.

I was always under the impression that ectoplasm is energy - energy that has materialized. I should imagine that Mediums that have had this happen have expended enormous amounts of energy for the ectoplasm to appear. Personally, I have never seen any myself - I have also heard it is very dangerous for the Medium, if that ectoplasm is touched by an outsider, because you would be interferring with the Medium's energy and what he/she is expending - I don't know how true that is mind.

Gene, I've previously heard the theories you presented, and I find the frequency hypothesis the most fascinating. Resinence is the key. These things would be easier to lock down, if these entities would standardize their visual manifestations. lol. We have to keep in mind that they don't always appear the same way. This could lead back to the strength theories, which I am a proponant of. Great thread guys. Very interesting. ~Jackal

Thank you Jack. I try. I like thoes theories too, too bad it's probably impossible to prove them. Maybe it's something science should waste the rest of it's money on ??? Who knows? Cause there are some pretty pointless experiments going on out there ... maybe those theories can be added to the list. Thanks again Jack.
