San Antonio, Texas - A Texas couple learned an apartment complex has a dress code when their application was rejected because of the husband’s tattoos.
Gilbert Carrillo of San Antonio has tattooed arms with the tattoos covering about the same area that the sleeves of a long-sleeved shirt would.
Carrillo and his wife, Melissa, said they would never have bothered applying and paying a $70 application fee -- if they had known the tattoos were a deal breaker. Rejecting a potential tenant for tattoos is not illegal because getting the tattoos is an issue of personal choice.
Managers at the complex agreed to refund the fee when a local television station did a story on the Carrillos. "It wasn't the money. It's the principle," Melissa Carrillo said.

As long as they pay their rent, who cares? Money is money.

As long as they respect the other tenants, pay their rent and obey the buildings rules, who cares? Sounds silly to me!

They couldn't get the apartment because of the husband's tattoos? That's really stupid. That would be like me not being allowed at the mall because of my soon-to-be mohawk.

Click to view attachmentUnless he looked like this, I can't see any reason for their ruling...I have tatoo's and my husband is covered with them (Navy days), but never heard of discrimination against them...

i have 2 friends that work in 2 different hospitals (nurses) here in the atlanta area. they tell me that it is common practice in the emergency rooms to let people with alot of tattoos &/or piercings sit or lay around and suffer. they are viewed as 3rd class citizens & trashy. therefore, nobody really puts forth any effort to help them until they have to.
now, don't flame the messenger here. i DO NOT feel this way & my 2 friends that work at the hospitals don't either. they just see that it is very common. they obviously have other friends that work at other hospitals & have been told that it happens there too. i think that's pretty f--ked up.

Wow, that's just horrible...If a person is in the ER, obviously it's for treatment and they should be treated like anyone else...As I posted before, my husband is covered with tatoos and when we were at St Kitts, all of the locals were standing around him staring...We later found out that they believed that anyone with tatoos had served time in jail for a serious crime...That was there local legend,..but in the case of the ER, it sounds more like discrimination....

Some people view tattoos as a way of disrespecting your body. This mindset might explain why, often, people with body art are not immediately helped in emergency rooms. Please do not get me wrong. Waiting to help someone in an emergency room or a hospital for any reason is ludicrous, especially if they are in pain. That being said, I am not a fan of tattoos, and do not understand the attraction of them.

I hope this gets challenged in court.
It may not be racial discrimination, but it is discrimination.

we don,t know the full story, i bet his tatoos are just an excuse, there is something else, why his appl. was rejected, who knows, he might have record of violent crimes, in that case i don,t blame managment, who wants to bring a tennant tham is very likely to couse problems,

^ No I heard the story on the news and the apartment complex does not rent to anyone with visible tattoos.

I am glad they got their money refunded.
With that said, would they really want to rent an apartment from a small-minded, idiotic biggot?
This has a been a blessing in disguise, it is only their egos that have been dented. I hope something far better comes their way and then they can give the two-fingered salute to the whole deal of the apartment that was never meant to be.

Thats really dumb...
Kinda reminds me of how my school wouldn't let me in until I removed the green highlights I put in my hair. Wasn't hurting anyone, now was it?

It's not a matter of hurting anyone, but if the school had specific dress codes, and this was included, then they did have the right to ask you to remove the color...I personally see nothing wrong with it, depending on where you are...

If there's anything I've learned in the past it's not to rent from a douche bag land lord anyways.
